A federal judge rules conditions in the South Compound at David Wade Correctional Center in Claiborne Parish are so severe they violate the constitutional rights of inmates being held in solitary confinement. Melanie Bray brought suit against Wade Center on behalf of people held there. She says now that a judge has ruled on the evidence, the trial moves to the remedy phase in January…:

Can’t Guard Mike has turned into Can’t Stay on the Field. The Saints are putting wide receiver Michael Thomas on injured reserve and it’s likely he’ll miss the rest of the season as he needs surgery on a dislocated toe. Thomas got hurt in week 3 and if he doesn’t play again this season that means he’ll only have played ten games over the last three seasons.

There is some good injury news for the Saints as there’s a chance wide receiver Jarvis Landry could return Monday. He has not played since week four and Quarterback Andy Dalton says he’s feeling more comfortable with the offense…

Hubig’s pie factory in New Orleans burned down 10 years ago leaving residents empty-handed after being sold traditionally since 1921. Now the Pie maker has a new location in Elmwood to bring back the fried fruit-filled hand pies that were baked into the city’s culture.  Jefferson Economic Development Commission CEO Jerry Bologna says the production lines are ready to bake…

News that the pie maker is looking to make a comeback and is hiring surfaced fast on social media. Bologna says workers are in high demand.

Hubig’s pies were originally sold in a plethora of retail stores across New Orleans and this time will be no different as they prepare to hit shelves. Bologna believes business will be good because of the respect locals hold for the pies.

There is some alarm at the news the Federal Reserve has raised the prime lending rate by three-quarters of a percent, but a Baton Rouge realty pro says homebuyers shouldn’t panic. Morris says despite the fed increase, mortgage rates are – on average – a bit lower than they were two weeks ago. He says one can still get into a home at around 6 & ½ to 7 percent interest, which he says is still vastly less than the double-digit mortgage rates of just 34 years ago. Morris reminds potential buyers one can always adjust their mortgage rate later…:

Louisiana’s Celebration Gator, the 60-foot-long gator float that premiered at last year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be back for a repeat performance and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says it’s proven to be a great return on investment for state tourism.

Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen announced yesterday that Michael Thomas would miss the rest of the season with a foot injury which has sidelined him since week 3. Although Thomas won’t be able to rejoin the team this year, former LSU receiver Jarvis Landry made his return to practice this week, and quarterback Andy Dalton says he’s getting comfortable in the offense. Now the permanent starter, Dalton has helped the offense to one of the highest scoring in the NFL despite the injuries…

LSU Police in Baton Rouge arrest a man they say raped a female student at gunpoint last month. 26-year-old Coda Stovall reportedly met the victim on social media. They met up and once in her dorm room, he allegedly got forceful. His bond has been set at a quarter-million bucks. Stovall has an arrest record laden with drug and weapons charges.

Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen announced that star Wide Receiver Michael Thomas is expected to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Thomas suffered the injury week 3 against the Panthers and hasn’t seen the field since. Now with unexpected setbacks in his recovery, Thomas will miss the remainder of the year.

LSU will face sixth-ranked Alabama Saturday. The Tigers are coming off a bye week which allowed them to get healthier for this top-ten matchup. Head Coach Brian Kelly says running back John Emery and receiver Jack Bech should be able to play this Saturday after missing the last game because of injuries. He says sophomore left guard Garrett Dellinger is close to returning after injuring his knee in the Tennessee loss…

The Pelicans suffered their third loss of the season last night in an overtime heartbreaker to the Lakers. Again without Brandon Ingram and Herb Jones, the pels rallied back from a 16 point deficit before missing two free throws to close the game and falling to Los Angeles in overtime. The pels will be back in New Orleans tomorrow night against the Warriors.

Bray says the court found conditions in the prison’s South Compound solitary wing served as a repository for the mentally ill.

Despite the ruling, Bray says conditions at the prison are not expected to improve immediately.

She says the next phase of the trial will be the remedy phase in January, where both sides will present experts.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries estimates nearly one-million feral hogs live in the state. Gentry says annual production losses were greatest for sugarcane, rice, corn, hay and soybeans…

The losses ranged from seven-million dollars for the timber industry and nearly 15-million dollars for sugarcane.

Gentry says feral swine generally prefer to stay away from humans, but their rapidly expanding population and constant search for food sources is causing increasing interactions with farmers and foresters….

Gentry says it’s estimated that about 70 to 75 percent of the population must be harvested to control the feral swine numbers, but in Louisiana, hunters kill less than half of the population so it continues to grow.

The event at the Governor’s Mansion celebrated families who adopted 700 children and youth from foster care during the past year. Dr. Marketa Garner Walters is DCFS secretary.

Young adults who are already in the foster care system can elect to stay until they are 21 and get state help with education and job training. She says several hundred young adults are in the new program, which is only three years old.  Walters says 55 young people between the ages of 13 and 17 were adopted from foster care during the past year.

Walters says the hardest groups to adopt are older children and sibling groups.  But she  says 269 siblings were adopted by 122 families over the course of the past year.
