Louisiana is among 19 states in the country with an adult obesity rate over 35-percent and it was only a decade ago no states had rates over 35 percent. for 2021 Louisiana ranked 7th in the nation for adult obesity.

Gracia says it’s not only adults with obesity concerns, 22-percent of children in Louisiana are considered obese. She says obesity is a complex issue and has several contributing factors for example genetics, societal issues, and economics.

During the pandemic food insecurity only increased and many individuals used food as a coping mechanism which also led to an increase in obesity rates. Gracia says to address the issue states need to implement fact-based obesity prevention programs that not only improve one’s quality of life but can also reduce health costs.

To reduce child obesity rates, Gracia says the “Making Healthy School Meals for All Students” should become a permanent policy. Since the pandemic, the federal policy was not renewed.

Forecasters say the lack of rain, plus low humidity and winds expected in Southeast Louisiana from Hurricane Ian contribute to the danger.

Rodrigue says if you have to do any outdoor burning, please be careful. They advise you to keep any burns at least 75 feet from any structures and keep a five-foot wet area around the burn piles. Don’t use flammable liquids around the burn pile.

A Sabine Parish couple get federal prison time for possessing and selling meth. Tryton Thomas received over 21 years and Elena Rivers got 10. Both were busted a year ago after a drug sting and a search of their home in Many.

 

Deputies in Tangipahoa Parish make an arrest in a home invasion earlier this month that left a Hammond father dead, and his 12-year-old daughter in critical condition. Officers say Omarion Hookfin is now charged with murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and kidnapping. He allegedly killed 33-year-old Donte Perry and shot Perry’s daughter five times.

Here’s a sobering statistic: 2 out of every 5 Louisianans are obese. That’s according to non-profit Trust for America’s Health. Group CEO Nadine Garcia says implementing obesity prevention programs would not only improve one’s quality of life but also reduce health costs…:

Fednat Insurance Corporation has been directed into insolvency by Florida regulators, because it does not have enough money to pay existing claims. Records show Fednat has 13-thousand Louisiana policyholders and 15-hundred claims open.

LSU has been recognized by the National Security Agency as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations (CAE-CO). Director of the LSU Applied Cybersecurity Lab Golden Richard (Ree-shard) says the designation is significant for the recruitment of potential computer science students and will only help graduates from the program when potential employers come calling.
