Mixon, along with fellow Democrats Gary Chambers and Syrita Steib are the major Democratic candidates trying to unseat Republican John Kennedy in November.

Louisiana’s abortion ban does not allow for exceptions for rape or incest. The state department of health released a list of medical exceptions that allow for the termination of a pregnancy. They center around the health of the mother and the fetus. But Mixon says doctors are still concerned if they perform an abortion based on one of the exemptions…

Mixon says he’s personally opposed to abortion, but many of the laws to prohibit abortions are too extreme…

The days of putting off getting a real ID are ending. If you want to fly domestically or even enter federal buildings, you must have a real ID Louisiana driver’s license or ID card, or a current passport by May third, next year.  Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles spokesperson Matthew Boudreaux :

Boudreaux says over the last two months, over 100 thousand Louisianans received a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card, but the public should prepare now for the May 2023 enforcement date

NOAA has revised its earlier hurricane predictions for the 2022 season. Lead hurricane outlook forecaster Matthew Rosencrans says while conditions still favor an above-average season…

Cut 9 (09)  “…become hurricanes.”

NOAA expects three to five of those hurricanes will become major storms of category 3 or higher.

90 percent of all Atlantic tropical cyclone activity occurs from August to October, and that’s why Rosencrans says they revise their previous predictions for the season in August.

Cut 10 (09) “…landfalling storms.” 

He says they can only predict a week before if a storm will most likely make landfall.

Rosencrans says while the tropics have been relatively calm the last few weeks, atmospheric conditions for an above-average season remains in place. And as we enter the peak of hurricane season…

The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30th.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the death of a Pineville man who was killed in a house fire Tuesday morning. Office spokesperson Ashely Rodrigue says when the Alpine Fire Department responded to the call, they found a male victim alone in the bathtub.

After an assessment of the scene, she says investigators have determined the fire began in the carport area on the exterior of the home.

And while the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation, Rodrigue says when it comes to electricity…

Rodrigue also stressed the need for smoke detectors, she says investigators found no working smoke detector in the home.

State Wildlife & Fisheries agents arrest a Houma man for alleged possession of drugs and for taking sharks over the limit. Agents stopped the man’s boat for routine life jacket compliance check, when they found the sharks, and methamphetamines. He’s is the Terrebonne parish jail. Look a story with drugs AND sharks!

The number of hurricanes predicted for this year has been revised downward…by ONE storm. NOAA forecaster Matt Rosencrans says severe storms are down to 3-to-5; down from 4-to-6. He says, yes, it’s been calm lately…but conditions for an active season are still out there. Rosencrans says as we near the peak of the season…:

A Shreveport mom was arrested for leaving her child inside a hot car. The 6-year-old will be fine, but the mother was booked with child desertion.

Governor Edwards will leave Louisiana tomorrow for a trip to overseas. The governor’s office says Edwards will lead a delegation of business and state leaders on an economic development, water management and resiliency mission to the Netherlands and France. Edwards will use the trip to develop economic partnerships and examine solutions those nations have implemented for flood control.

NOAA slightly revises their predictions for the Atlantic season to 14 to 20 named storms in which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes. 90 percent of all Atlantic tropical cyclone activity occurs from August to October, and that’s why Lead forecaster Matthew Rosencrans says they revise their predictions in August.

In May they estimated up to 21 named storms.

That’s LSU marine ecologist Nancy Rabalais who says that’s less than half the size of last year. The dead zone is an area of low oxygen and she says a combination of weather events led to the smaller size this year.

Colorado State University revises their predictions for the 2022 hurricane season. Now they expect the season to have 18 named storms, that includes the three storms that have already formed. Earlier this year they predicted 19. State Climatologist Barry Keim says they decreased the total by one it’s still an above average season.

Education leaders and State Police will host the state’s first-ever School Safety Summit in Baton Rouge today. Education superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley says this is about keeping kids safe while at school…:

Brumley says they are expecting over 800 people at the summit. That includes law enforcement, government agencies and mental health providers.

The SafeSchools Louisiana app has been deployed to more than 500 schools across the state. Crimestoppers President Darlene Cusanza says the app gives students and parents a way to anonymously report on-campus concerns. She says the free app asks you what you need to report and how you know the information.

In the next hour we’ll get a revised forecast from NOAA on how many named storms we’ll see this hurricane season. So far we’ve only seen three, but State Climatologist Barry Keim says we are still a couple of weeks away from the heart of the season…

This morning NOAA will issue its yearly August update to the Atlantic Hurricane season and even though it’s been quiet so far, State Climatologist Barry Keim doesn’t expect their update to differ greatly from the forecast in May of 14 to 21 named storms, in which six to 10 would be hurricanes.
