Four people are dead and the suspect is under arrest following a killing spree that took place over a couple of weeks. Kevin Barnhart has the details.

Donald “Doc” Hines a physician who led the Louisiana Senate as president from 2004-2008 died Tuesday after a long illness. Hines was 85. The democrat from Bunkie served in the Senate from 1993 to 2008. He was described as a country doctor of the old school.

An alleged Walmart thief dragged a cop through a parking lot and led Slidell Police on a high-speed chase then ended when the suspect wrecked his car in Mississippi.
Slidell Police spokesperson Daniel Seuzeneau says 51-year-old Robert Myers of Picayune, Mississippi fled from Walmart Loss Prevention officers and was later cornered in his car by Slidell authorities…

An Amite High School athlete is dead following a Tuesday football practice. The Amite Police Department received a call about an emergency at the school around 9 pm. Upon arrival, other first responders were on the scene performing CPR to 15-year-old Terrance Allen. Louisiana High School Athletic Association spokesperson Kate Adams says the agency continues to keep an eye on the case.

It’s a foregone conclusion that the Pelicans will take Duke Legend Zion Williamson with the first pick in this evening’s NBA draft, but what are their options with the 4th pick? Matt Doyle has more.

The 6-7, 280 forward says he loved his recent trip to New Orleans to meet team officials. Media caught him smiling ear to ear after having dinner at Commanders Palace and high fiving fans on the street.

A 22-year-old Metairie man is under arrest following a killing spree of four randomly selected victims. Sean Barrette became the suspect in crimes after a forensic analysis was performed on his phone after leaving it at a crime scene. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says the suspect has had a recent history of mental problems.

It’s a stone cold lock that New Orleans will grab generational talent, Duke legend Zion Williamson with the first pick. Locked on Pelicans publisher Jake Madison says he’s more than just a dominant player…

Zach Hess announced yesterday his decision to sign with the Detroit Tigers, ending his stay as an LSU tiger. Hess, a junior pitcher from Virginia wrote a note on Instagram with his decision. After reflecting on his time at LSU Hess thanked his teammates, LSU, and the state of Louisiana.

Drew Brees has been nominated for two ESPY’S. The Saints quarterback is nominated for best NFL player and best record-breaking performance. Brees already has 4 espy’s. The other nominees for the best player include Patrick Mahomes of the chiefs, Aaron Donald of the rams, and Todd Gurley also of the rams.

Myers is facing Third Offense Felony Theft, Flight From an Officer, Battery of an Officer, Assault of an Officer, and more.

Once Myers threw the car in drive to evade police, Seuzeneau says one of the officers attempted to stop him but got stuck onto the car as it sped off through the parking lot towards the highway.

There was a near miss where Myer’s truck nearly struck another cop dead on, but the officer was able to jump out of the way at the last second.

So why nearly run over two cops, and lead authorities on a cross-state high-speed chase? Well…

Seuzeneau says Myers is facing some minor traffic charges across the border, but will soon be extradited.

A 22-year-old Metairie man is under arrest following a killing spree of four randomly selected victims.  Sean Barrette became the suspect in crimes after a forensic analysis was performed on his phone after leaving it at a crime scene.  Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says the suspect has had a recent history of mental problems.

Authorities have located a Smith and Wesson 40 caliber handgun believed to have been in the crimes spanning a couple of weeks in the suspect’s laundry basket.  Lopinto says it’s rare that a murder suspect does not have a previous connection to the victim.

Cut 11 (11) “…with each other..”

Lopinto says investigators are uncertain how the suspect obtained the gun but says there is nothing in the civil record of the court that would have prevented him from making a lawful purchase of the firearm.

Cut 12 (09) “…nothing flagging it.”

A black man, two Hispanic men, and a white man across Metairie and New Orleans were killed in the spree but authorities are saying that the motive, while currently unclear, is not likely tied to race, but that is subject to change as the investigation continues.  Authorities say the suspect is not being cooperative.

Police say the team had just finished practice and that Allen was joking in the locker room before falling to the ground.  First responders were able to get a pulse as the teen was taken to a medical facility, but died prior to arrival.  Adams says the agency continues to keep an eye on the case.

Jefferson Parish Sherriff Office have identified 22-year old Sean Barrette as the suspect who randomly selected four victims to murder in Metairie and New Orleans in the last few weeks. Two of the four victims are Hispanic males and they all appear to be random at this point in the investigation. A cell phone found at the scene of one murders, authorities say linked the suspect to the murders.

Governor John Bel Edwards says he’s not concerned about losing votes over his decision to sign a series of abortion restrictions during the legislative session. Edwards says his support for the fetal heartbeat abortion ban that would functionally ban abortion six weeks after pregnancy should not have come as a surprise, given his past support for pro-life policy.

Edwards received harsh criticism from national level Democrats after the signatures and is now one of the party’s highest positioned pro-life members.

Over a million dollars worth of cocaine was found floating 50 miles off the Louisiana coast by a work boat that hauled it back into Port of Iberia and turned the contraband over to authorities. Iberia Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Major Wendall Raborn says they aren’t certain how the package got left stranded on the high seas, but it could have come from an aerial drop from the cartels that just didn’t find it’s mark.

The NBA draft is just a day away and the hype over presumed soon-to-be Pelican Zion Williamson is hitting fever pitch after the Duke legend’s visit to the Crescent City where the 18-year-old grinned ear to ear as he chowed down on fried shrimp and mash potatoes at Commanders Palace, high fived locals on the streets, and even had a Popeyes honor the world class athlete with an 82 inch tray of chicken wings, the same measurement as Williams’ “wingspan”.

On the Pelicans side there appears to be little to no doubt that the phenom is will be picked as the team has even posted a highlight compilation video on the team website.

The team currently has two picks in the first round, but only one of those selections are currently in New Orleans’ possession. The 4th pick the Pels reportedly received in the Anthony Davis trade will technically be made by the Lakers, because the transaction will not be finalized until at least July 6th. Texas Tech’s Jarrett Culver, Vanderbilt’s Darius Garland, and Virginia’s DeAndre Hunter are thought to be in contention for the selection, if the Pelican’s do not trade it away.

ESPN reports that negotiations between the Saints and their star wide receiver Michael Thomas are progressing so well that a new deal could be in place before the start of training camp and when it’s said and done, the former first round pick will be the highest paid pass catcher in the NFL. Thomas led the NFL with 125 catches last season.

The state’s top high school basketball player has committed to LSU. Walker’s Jalen Cook is gearing for his senior season at Walker High School, but the four-star prospect says he plans to attend LSU after his prep days are done. He’s the reinging Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year.

And LSU football received a verbal commitment from Alabama defensive lineman Eric Taylor. The six-foot-five, 280-pounder is the 19th pledge of the 2020 class.

LSU Hall of Famer Ebert Van Buren has passed away at the age of 94.

After Governor Edwards signed a series of abortion restrictive laws there are rumblings that a second, pro-choice Democrat could enter the race for Governor to capitalize on discontent among progressive voters. Edwards says he’s confident Louisiana Democrats still have his back.

Polling suggests that potential pro-choice progressive candidate could get some traction if they were to run for Governor to the left of Edwards.

A DOTD worker was killed Wednesday in Simsboro when an 18 wheeler collided with a DOTD truck on LA Highway 563. The worker was standing behind the truck replacing road signs along with the highway. With an increase of road construction this time of year Louisiana State Police spokesperson trooper Michael Reichardt warns motorist to be more alert.

Governor Edwards says he’s confident progressive voters in the state won’t abandon him at the polls over his decision to sign one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion bans. Matt Doyle has the story.

Governor Edwards has signed the “Truth in Labeling” bill into law prohibiting Louisiana food producers from using terminology like “meat” or “milk” when labeling substitute products created from plants, or “rice” when labeling cauliflower-based substitutes.  Senator Frances Thompson authored the bill.

The Sherriff’s office says the suspect has a history of mental issues and is not cooperating with authorities at this time.

A DOTD worker was killed Tuesday in a construction zone in Lincoln Parish. Louisiana State Police want to remind motorist that the Move Over Law is designed to keep everyone safe. Spokesperson trooper Michael Reichardt says with numerous construction projects in the works this summer and motorist need to pay extra attention.

Governor John Bel Edwards says he’s not concerned about losing votes over his decision to sign a series of abortion restrictions during the legislative session. The national Democratic party platform is definitively pro-choice, but Louisiana Democratic Party Executive Director Stephen Handwerk says the state party is still rallying behind Edwards, because he shares their values in other areas.

The Department of Ag will enforce regulations, next October after passage of a truth in labeling bill, and violators of the law receive a $500 fine per day, per violation. Senator Frances Thompson author of the bill says the goal of the law is not to put anyone out of business.

State Police are investigating an accident after a DOTD worker was killed Wednesday in Simsboro. Michael Reichardt with Louisiana State Police says drivers need to remember to pay attention to the road for the sake of other motorists as well as construction workers.

50-year old Johnny Cole of West Monroe was pronounced dead on the scene.
