The Seawolves are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015. Senior right-hander Bret Clarke is their top pitcher, with an 8-0 record and a 3.76 ERA. Nick Grande is Stony Brook’s top hitter. He’s hitting .342 with 19 stolen bases. First pitch is at 6 PM.

McNeese will meet Indiana State at noon on Friday in the Nashville Regional. The Cowboys are in the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2003.

Southern University is in the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time in 10 years and the Jaguars will travel up to Starkville to face Mississippi State on Friday afternoon. The other two teams in the Starkville Regional are Central Michigan and Miami, a traditional power in college baseball. Southern Coach Kerrick Jackson says this Regional will serve as a measuring stick…

The Army Corps of Engineers announces it will open the Morganza Spillway in Pointe Coupee Parish on Sunday. Governor John Bel Edwards on why they need to open the Morganza Floodway structure for the third time in history and the first since 2011.

The Louisiana House is set to vote this afternoon on a bill that would ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is around six weeks of pregnancy. Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Georgia are among the states that have passed similar anti-abortion legislation and the measures are facing court challenges.

There’s about a week and a half left in the legislative session and a bill to bring sports betting to Louisiana has yet to pass. It died in the legislature last year and Metairie Senator Danny Martiny is trying to make sure it doesn’t happen again….

Researchers at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center is participating in a study that’s looking at why Southerners in some rural parishes live longer, healthier lives than other parishes, even though the two parishes share similar poverty levels and racial composition.

A record number of Louisiana high school graduates from the class of 2018 are set to attend college this fall. The state has seen a 23 percent increase in the number of students entering college from high school since 2012. Department of Education Assistant Superintendent Jessica Bahgian says that adds up to 4,626 more students than seven years ago.

Approximately 15-hundred more students decided to enter college in the class of 18 than the class of 17.

The Session is scheduled to wrap up June 6th.

The state budget is still being debated in the legislature, the senate finance committee re-wrote the house-backed spending proposal that includes an increase on college spending, a teacher pay raise and a $39 million block grant for school districts. The house version of the budget has similar teacher pay raises but excluded the $39 million dollar block grant. The budget also increases funding for health programs, child welfare, corrections and a pay raise for state employees. The $30 billion dollar operating budget now heads to the Senate floor.

With the Morganza Spillway set to open Sunday, Louisiana’s Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority and the St. Mary Levee District will begin installing a temporary barge floodgate on Bayou Chene  in southern Assumption Parish today. Governor Edwards says it will take about a week to install and it will prevent backwater flooding for communities east of Morgan City…

A senate bill to allow a parish vote on the legalization of sports betting will be heard today in the House Appropriations Committee. The current bill calls for sports betting at racetracks and casinos but video poker interests are hoping to expand that. If that happens the bill would go it back to the Senate and time is running short in this legislative session.  But Metairie Republican Danny Martiny is optimistic and thinks Louisiana could have sports betting in the state’s racetracks, riverboat casinos, and land-based casino in New Orleans by the end of the year.

Three Louisiana teams are in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, LSU, McNeese and Southern. LSU will square off against the Stony Brook Friday at six o’clock at The Box. The McNeese Cowboys, who won the Southland Conference Tournament on Saturday, head to Nashville and face to Indiana State Friday at noon. The Southern Jaguars will make their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 10 years. The Jaguars head to Starkville to face Mississippi State, Friday afternoon.

LSU will face Stony Brook on Friday night in a rematch of the 2012 Super Regionals that was won by the Seawolves. The Sun Devils are the two seed and they lead the country with 91 home runs. The Golden Eagles are the three seed and they are led by Matt Wallner and his 21 home runs.

McNeese State is a three seed in the Nashville Regional and the Cowboys will face Indiana State at noon. It’s the Cowboys fifth NCAA Regional appearance and the first since 2013. The other two teams in that regional are top seeded Vanderbilt and Ohio State is the four seed.

The Southern Jaguars are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years and they’ll play Mississippi State at noon on Friday at Dudy Noble Field. The Jaguars won just nine games last season and second-year coach Kerrick Jackson is proud to bring a winner back to Southern….

After more than a thousand complaints this year about trash collection the East Baton Rouge Metro Council is considering a change in collection days.  A spokesperson for Republic the vendor for trash pick-up blames the spike of complaints on a national shortage of drivers and construction debris that is not removed by contractors.  A change in collection days to realign routes is one of the solutions the council is considering along with tracking devices of trucks.

The Boston University School of Medicine is coordinating the six-year study and funding comes from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Broyles says the study has immense potential, because it will figure out what why some rural areas combat health risks better and the information gained can be used by communities to make changes to improve health…

And that’s not the only sports related legislation working it’s way through the chambers as House approved Fantasy sports regulation is halfway to final passage and a bill that would tax the activity will soon receive a hearing in a Senate committee.

As it stands the tax rate for fantasy sports is currently at 15 percent, which Fairness for Fantasy Sports spokesperson Ryan Berni says would be the highest in the nation.

Opponents argue it’s a lower rate than what other gaming activities in the state must pay.

The bill has seen stiff opposition from other gaming interest groups who say fantasy sports should only be accessible from within a casino, or a video poker facility. Berni that would be disregarding the will of 60 percent of voters and 47 parishes that approved the activity last fall. He says it would be a shame to see special interests tank the legislation…

House approved Fantasy sports regulation is halfway to final passage as a bill that would tax the activity will soon receive a hearing in a Senate committee. Over 60 percent of voters, and 47 parishes approved the activity last fall, and Fairness for Fantasy Sports spokesperson Ryan Berni says it would be a tragedy to see the will of those voters overturned by gaming lobbyists in the Senate.

Opponents argue fantasy sports is paying a much lower tax rate than what other gaming activities in the state.
