The owner of Cajun Cannabis has been arrested on felony drug charges after his new store was raided last night. Cajun Cannabis began selling CBD oil this past weekend and during a traffic stop last night the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s office arrested Travis DeYoung after CBD oil, gummies and mints were found in his vehicle. Louisiana officials have said CBD is illegal.

Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker told the Associated Press that a quarter of the city will likely remain without power for rest of the day.

A shelter has been set up at Glenview Elementary for those without electricity. .

National Weather Service forecaster CS Ross says at least an EF-3 tornado struck Ruston just before two A-M…

Ross says there’s also been reports of damage in the Sabine Parish town of Converse and Downsville, which is located on the border of Lincoln and Union parishes. Wind damage has also been reported in rural Morehouse Parish.

The most extensive damage is in Ruston. State Police Troop F spokesperson Michael Reichardt says the clean up effort will take some time

A bill to legalize the growing and processing of Industrial hemp is on it’s way to the full House after unanimously passing in the House Agriculture Committee. Gonzales Representative Clay Shexnayder says hemp is  a highly profitable, and renewable crop.

According to PEW, 19 states harvested industrial hemp last year, but only 25,000 total acres.

Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says colonists began harvesting hemp in the early 1700s, and had a number of uses for it, including paper. He says these days hemp can be found in a range of products.

The first few drafts of the Declaration of Independence were on hemp paper.

Jennings Representative John Guinn says he supports the legislation, and in a back and forth with Strain, says the banning of hemp production in America can be traced to the rise of their competitors in big plastic…

The 2018 Farm Bill allowed states to regulate the production of industrial hemp, which while related to marijuana, has a THC level far below the amount necessary to get you high.

Following a 5-1 vote, a constitutional amendment that aims to raise the minimum wage in Louisiana to $9 an hour on July 1, 2020, is headed to the Senate floor, where the effort died last year. New Orleans Senator Troy Carter says a bump in the minimum wage would show that the state is serious about helping its working poor.

Governor John Bel Edwards has sought an increase in the minimum wage since taking office in 2016.

Since its a a constitutional amendment, it will need a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate and voter approval in the fall.

President and CEO of Ochsner Health System Warner Thomas spoke in favor, saying Ochsner has decided to raise its own minimum wage to $12 an hour.

NFIB Louisiana director Dawn Starns says a mandated wage increase would negatively impact small businesses and result in a net loss of 36,000 jobs in the state.

The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry is also in opposition. Vice president of government relations Jim Patterson applauds the businesses that have decided to raise their minimum wages, but not all businesses have the resources to do it..

The Louisiana Tech campus is recovering from significant damage suffered from a tornado that ripped through the area around two this morning.

Tech President Les Guice says thankfully the tornado skirted the edge of the core academic buildings, but the residential halls weren’t so lucky.

Most of the campus still has power, but classes have been canceled today to allow students to recover, and check in on family.

Despite the heavy damage, which Guice says may create long term roofing issues, the President celebrated the fact that everyone on campus appears to have avoided the worst.

The pictures from the campus are startling, with trees ripped up by the roots, and debris littering the grounds. Guice says walking the halls and fields that are usually teeming with students was heart-wrenching.

Students and locals have begun recovery efforts as the entire campus will need to be cleared of debris and uprooted trees removed. Guice says one of those locals pitching in is none other than Bulldogs basketball legend, the Mailman himself, Karl Malone.

The Louisiana National Guard has mobilized a unit to assist with recovery. They are equipped with chain saws, dump trucks and bobcats.

Business organizations oppose the legislation. Governor Edwards is surveying the devastation in Ruston at this hour by helicopter as the National Guard has mobilized and is on it’s way to the city that was slammed by a deadly tornado around 2AM this morning. Chief Deputy with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s office, Stephen Williams, says at least half of the city is without power and will be for some time.

A Mississippi police officer who was indicted in Louisiana on charges that he used excessive force while working in the Bayou State has resigned from his job with Moss Point, Mississippi Police. 44-year-old Robert Hammac had been working at the Magnolia State police department for several months, and the police chief there says they were not aware of the ongoing investigation into his behavior as a Lake Charles officer.

Governor Edwards has cancelled plans to testify at the state capitol for bills that he supports and instead he’ll travel to Ruston to get a first hand look at the damage and what state resources the city needs.

A large portion of Louisiana is under a tornado watch until three PM this afternoon. The watch area covers Acadiana and all of southeast Louisiana.

Governor John Bel Edwards is calling for three televised debates prior to the October election. UL Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says it’s interesting that Edwards is willing to debate his challengers and previous incumbents refusal to face their challengers has contributed to the public’s distrust of politicians.

Extensive damage has been reported throughout the city, even on Louisiana Tech’s campus, where the softball stadium and soccer field sustained damage. Classes have been canceled for the day.

The House Agriculture Committee will hear a bill today that would legalize, and regulate the growth of industrial hemp in Louisiana.  The product was OK’d by the USDA, but Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says it’s still off limits here.

The plant is featured in 50,000 different products and can be turned into hypoallergenic fabrics, concrete, has nutritional value, and more.

Governor Edwards wants to participate in three televised debates for the upcoming election.  While many incumbents shy away from debating their opponents., U-L Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says it’s a strategy that certainly has a cold logic behind it.

Two people are dead after a tornado ripped thru the Louisiana Tech Campus early this morning according to The Monroe Newstar. The two fatalities have not yet been identified and classes have been canceled for the day. Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker says “It’s bad, real bad. We took a direct hit” Most of the damage occurred along Tech Drive and the Cypress Springs subdivision south of Interstate 20 and hundreds are without power.

Governor Edwards is calling for three televised debates with his opponents in the governor’s race.  Connor Ferrill has more.

The Louisiana Public Service Commission wants telephone companies to hang up on robocalls. Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell says the calls are a violation of Louisiana’s ‘Do Not Call’ law that prevents telemarketers from calling numbers that have signed up on a do not call registry. He says they are breaking the law he wants them to receive severe fines…

The LSU AgCenter will begin studying to effects of cannabis-based compounds on epileptic seizures, using the common zebrafish as a lab rat.
AgCenter researcher Chris Green developed the “zebrafish model”, and says the test starts by filming and measuring the movements of the seizing fish…

Tonight at 7PM it’s the NFL Draft and two former Tigers are expected to go in the first round. One of those is one of the most beloved players in LSU history, linebacker Devin White. NFL Draft analyst Mike Detillier says White enters as one of the best middle linebacker prospects in draft history.

Detillier says Oakland could take White at number four and Tampa, who has the fifth pick, has also expressed interest in the Butkus Award winner. While former LSU cornerback Greedy Williams is expected to be a mid to late first round pick.

New LSU athletics director Scott Woodward has agreed to a six-year contract worth nearly eight million dollars. His deal will go into effect on May 6 and he’ll earn one-point-one million dollars in the first year.

Changes have been made to LSU basketball coach Will Wade’s contract based on media reports. Wade’s amended deal now gives LSU the power to fire him if he commits a Level One or Level Two NCAA violation or if the NCAA infractions committee issues a formal notice to LSU that Wade was involved in a Level One or Leve Two violation. He also will not receive his bonus for the Tigers winning the SEC and making the the Sweet 16.

Also assistant coach Tony Benford, who served as interim head coach while Wade was suspended, has reportedly left LSU for an assistant’s job at TCU.

College baseball last night, Tyler Smith hit a school-record tying three home runs in a 10-7 upset win over sixth ranked Arkansas. It’s the first time the Demons have won in an SEC ballpark since 2011.

McNeese rallied from a three nothing deficit, to beat Louisiana Tech five to three. Carson Maxwell mashed a three-run homer in the eighth inning to give the Cowboys the lead.

Nicholls blanked L-S-U Alexandria three to nothing. Parker White tossed six shutout innings for the win.
