This year Christmas tree prices are on the rise.  That’s due to growing shortages stemming from the Great Recession.  The 2008 financial crisis put many tree farmers out of business.  Blake Huval, the owner of Huval’s Tree Hut in Central, says for those looking to save a few bucks, he recommends looking at trees that might not be a premium grade tree.

120 jobs are coming to Minden as a result of Catamaran Solution’s planned 20 acre manufacturing site that will be completed over the next three years. The 135,000 square foot industrial fabrication center jobs will come with an average annual salary of just over 60-thousand. Mayor Tommy Davis says Minden’s rail and interstate access helped seal the deal.

The site is part of the state’s developing I-20 Cyber Corridor.

Prosecutors are attempting to obtain the cell phone passcode of Matthew Naquin, a former LSU student charged with negligent homicide in the Max Gruver case.  But Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the Fifth Amendment prohibits Naquin from being obligated to give a testimony revealing his cellular passcode.

Louisiana Tech has accepted an invitation to play in the Hawaii Bowl and they’ll face the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors of the Mountain West Conference on Saturday December 22nd at 9:30 Central time. It’s the fifth straight season the Bulldogs will play in a bowl game, they’ve won the previous four. Hawaii is 8-5 on the season.

The Ragin Cajuns back on the practice field this afternoon getting ready for Saturday’s Sun Belt title game against Appalachian State. The Mountaineers are 9-2 overall, 7-1 in the Sun Belt as they clinched the East Division with a win over Troy last week. UL Lafayette Coach Billy Napier says they need a good week of preparation in order to beat the Mountainers on their home turf…

Saints Hall of Fame linebacker Rickey Jackson is recovering after undergoing brain surgery. It’s unknown why the surgery was needed, but NOLA-dot-com says the procedure was a success. The member of the Dome Patrol was inducted into the pro football Hall of Fame in 2010.

A hearing will take place next week on whether prosecutors can order former LSU student Matthew Naquin to provide the passcode to his phone. Naquin is charged with negligent homicide in the suspected hazing death of Maxwell Gruver. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says this is a tough issue for the court system…

Ciolino says a person can’t be forced to recite the code of their cell phone, because it would infringe on their 5th amendment right which protects a defendant from self incrimation.

Ciolino says with Naquin’s case of using a passcode, courts will have a tougher time accessing the contents of his cell phone.  Ciolino adds that courts don’t have the same issue with some of the new technology used in unlocking devices.

WBRZ-TV is reporting Dedrick Lee, who is the son of convicted south Louisiana serial killer Derrick Todd Lee, has been charged with negligent homicide, in the fatal shooting death of a 16-year-old. The East Feliciana High School student was killed in a home in Clinton. Dedrick Lee has posted bond and you may remember his dad died in prison.

Time is running out for Congress to renew the National Flood Insurance Program. Flood insurance will lapse if sought, if a six-month extension is not passed by Friday. Senator John Kennedy says they’re working towards an extension, but some lawmakers are trying to kill the program, permanently.

There’s a new budget dispute between the Edwards administration and House Republican leadership. During a Revenue Estimating Conference meeting, House Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry would not go along with a recommendation by economists to upgrade the state’s economic forecast, because he doesn’t want the state to spend more money than it collects. Dardenne says Henry’s action prevents the state from giving various agencies an additional 43-million dollars and he says it threatens an attempt to give teachers a pay raise next year. But Henry calls that more fearmongering from the Edwards administration….

The National Flood Insurance Program is set to expire on Friday, but Senator John Kennedy says they can’t afford for that to happen so they are looking to extend the N-F-I-P for at least another six months….
