Tomorrow you’ll have a chance to weigh in on whether or not the state should require unanimous jury verdicts in felony cases, amendment two on the ballot. The option passed the House 84 to 15 and has received widespread bi-partisan support behind a message that former District Attorney Ed Tarpley says is clear.
Cut 4 (11) “…in Louisiana.”
The amendment has the support of groups of the political spectrum and US Senator Bill Cassidy has voiced his support.
But several current DAs have reservations about the change. Tangipahoa, Livingston, and Helena DA Scott Perrilloux says the current law is delivering justice just fine, and the proposed change would be a burden on victims.
Cut 5 (08) “…done again.”
Supporters like Tarpley say the law is racist in nature and has a disproportionate effect on minority defendants who lose the ability to have a jury of their peers. Perrilloux says that’s not true, and that Apodaca vs. Oregon settled that question.
Cut 6 (05) “…it’s legal.”
But Tarpley says that 1972 4-1-4 decision is remarkably flawed in that it required unanimous juries in federal cases but allowed states to make their own call on it. He says the founders thought of it as vital for American justice.
Cut 7 (10) “…unanimous”

For the second time in less than a week, portions of Louisiana are facing the threat of severe weather. National Weather Service Shreveport Meteorologist Aaron Davis says the weather may bring with it some dangerous wind conditions.
Cut 8 (11) “…locally heavy rainfall.”
Davis says it’s hard to determine how much tornado activity the state could see out of this storm system compared to the one that produced numerous tornadoes last week.
Cut 9 (09) “…of the event.”
Davis says with the uncertainty of what the weather could bring, it’s important to plan ahead when you may only have a few minutes from the time you receive a tornado warning until impact.
Cut 10 (09) “…can save lives.“

Tomorrow voters head to the polls to cast their ballots, but there hasn’t been much publicity for the statewide election of a new Secretary of State. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the stressed importance of this Election Day for other issues on the ballot has resulted in more people casting votes in the special election for the statewide seat.
Cut 11 (08) “…news for them.”
Pinsonat says many voters may be undecided when it comes to the Secretary of State’s race due to a lack of campaign funding for the candidates.
Cut 12 (08) “…about the candidates.”
Pinsonat says the lack of knowledge of the candidates doesn’t really benefit any candidate and the outcome is a toss-up
Cut 13 (10) “…the black communities.”
