Tangipahoa voters will not get a chance to decide if they want a riverboat casino in their parish. A bill that called for a local referendum in November did not pass the Senate on a 15-18 vote. A House bill that would have done the same thing, also failed to get out of a House Committee.

Supporters seeking to end Louisiana’s requirement that only 10 of 12 jurors are needed in order to secure a conviction in felony cases won a legislative battle today as the measure received approval from a House committee. The constitutional amendment would require all 12 jurists to agree on guilty or not guilty. The author of the legislation, New Orleans Senator, J-P Morrell says Louisiana is one of the two states using a Jim Crow era law in felony trials….

The uanimous jury proposal has already been approved by the Senate, it now heads to the House and will need voter approval as well.

Baton Rouge police say a two-year accidentally shot his eight-year-old brorther inside a vehicle. Detectives say the boys’ father left the loaded handgun unattended when he got out of the car. The child was shot in the arm, but the injury is not considered life-threatening.

The House Criminal Justice Committee approves a constitutional amendment that calls for all 12 members of a criminal jury to agree on the guilt or innocence of an accused person. Current law only requires 10. The debate digressed to a racial issue when an opponent, Calcasieu D.A. John Derosier, brushed off the notion that unanimous juries were racially driven.

Louisiana and Oregon are the only two states without Unanimous jury requirements. The Senate has already approved the proposal and it will need a two-thirds vote on the House floor.

The bill would update bestiality laws, and codify them as only applying to acts between man and animal. Some opponents argue the bill is an attempt to protect homosexual behavior. The bill’s sponsor, New Orleans Senator JP Morrell.

Louisiana Family Forum President Gene Mills objected to certain parts of the bill, because he says as written, the law would remove human on human acts from criminality.

Voters could soon have the opportunity to decide if serious felony convictions should require an unanimous jury verdict. A constitutional amendment requiring unanimous jury verdicts was approved by a House committee today. Several district attorneys oppose the constitutional amendment because they say it will be tougher to get convictions. Calcasieu D-A John DeRosier said “it is what is” when discussing the current standard of 10 of 12 jurors for a guilty verdict as a vestigate of slavery. When the Senate-approved legislation passed, it drew a round of applause. It just needs House approval and then it heads to the voters.

And legislation that would allow a family to install a surveillance camera inside a nursing home room so it can keep tabs on their loved one is moving closer to final passage. The House approved member received backing from the Senate Health and Welfare Committee today. Senators say they will work on tightening the language of the bill.

The Louisiana Federation of Teachers say the average teacher salary has fallen two-thousand dollars below what teachers make in Southern states. L-F-T spokesperson Les Landon says they are polling members to find out what actions they should take to help improve pay and other issues impacting teachers….

State Police has arrested a Morehouse Parish Deputy for alleged inappropriate sexual contact with an inmate at the detention center in Bastrop. 50-year-old Terry Davis is facing a charge of malfeasance in office.

What a return to the line-up for LSU infielder Josh Smith, who hit a home run in an 8-0 win over Lamar last night. Smith had been sidelined since the opening weekend with a bad back. The Tigers also got a great pitching performance from AJ Labas, who tossed a complete game shutout. LSU leaves today for Oxford, where they’ll begin a series versus Ole Miss tomorrow.

The Ragin Cajuns ended Louisiana Tech’s five game winning streak with a nine to four victory win over the Bulldogs last night. Junior Daniel Lahare equaled a career-high four hits, while freshman left-hander Austin Perrin threw a career-high eight innings for the victory.

McNeese rallied from a late 3-1 deficit and defeated ULM seven to three in eleven innings. Tha’s seven wins for the Cowboys in their last eight games.

It will be the Pelicans versus Golden State in the Western Conference semifinals. The Warriors finished off the Spurs in five games last night. And Game one will be Saturday night in Oakland at 8:30 on TNT. New Orleans has struggled against Golden State in recent seasons as the defending NBA champs have won 20 of the last 22 games. No word on when All-star guard Stephen Curry will return. He’s been out since March 23rd with a sprained MCL in his left knee.

LSU point guard Tremont Waters has put his name down for the NBA Early entry draft list, but if he doesn’t hire an agent, Waters can return to LSU for his sophomore season. Waters has until May 30th to withdraw his name. The Connecticut native made the All-SEC Freshman team after averaging 16 points, six assists and two steals last season.

There’s a report that the NBA and its players association are in talks to eliminate the one and done rule after the 2020 season.

A teachers strike in Kentucky that led to increased funding for schools and higher pay is inspiring educator walkouts and work stoppages across the south. Louisiana Federation of Teachers is now polling its members to see what actions they would favor to address quality of life for teachers and students. LFT spokesperson Les Landon says it’s not just about winning a bigger paycheck.

It doesn’t look like Tangipahoa Parish will vote on whether they want a riverboat casino in their parish. A bill that called for a local referendum in November did not pass the Senate on a 15-18 vote. The House Criminal Justice Committee is considering a measure that would change the threshold for a jury to find a defendant guilty in a criminal case.
