Louisiana is experiencing another very cold day, and it looks to stay this way and get even chillier into the New Year. Michelle Southern reports…:

The US Department of Agriculture will test a new product to combat the nationwide swine infestation. Matt Doyle has more.

The US Department of Agriculture will test a new method in 2018 for controlling the rampant feral hog population. Texas and Alabama were chosen for a pilot program involving a new poison bait that officials hope will target the swine, without damaging local ecosystems. Louisiana Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says the Sodium Nitrite targets red blood cells to incapacitate the pigs…

Cut 3 (06) “ninety minutes.”

Sodium Nitrite is typically used as a meat preserver, and its salty flavor usually keeps wild animals uninterested. Strain says part of the testing will be finding out how to get the pigs to actually eat it…

Strain says the test won’t be cheap…

Testing is set to begin early 2018.

Louisiana is one of eight states that saw a population drop. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between July 2016 and July 2017, the state’s population decreased by fewer than 2,000.  About 27,000 relocated to other states.  Demographer Greg Rigamer says a lot of the decrease has to do with the current job market…

Rigamer says the state’s budget crisis has not helped encourage job growth in Louisiana.  And with a projected one-billion-dollar shortfall, there doesn’t seem to be a quick fix coming…

Rigamer says the hospitality industry is huge in the Bayou State.  But if Louisiana wants to see the population increase again, wages need to go up for those working hard to welcome travelers…

Keim says another cold front is expected to sweep across the state Sunday, bringing in even cooler air….:

Keim says on Monday, New Years Day and into Tuesday, the state is expected to see the coldest temperatures of the season. He says thermometers are slated to read in the low 20s along the I-20 corridor Tuesday morning, and low 30s in the coastal zone…:

Health officials thought we’d be seeing fewer flu cases by now, but it’s actually gotten worse in Louisiana. Dr. Frank Welch with the state department of health says we’re seeing almost double the number of cases as our neighboring states…:

Louisiana is leading the nation in the number of flu cases this year. The drug used to treat the flu, Tamiflu, is flying off local pharmacy shelves. Welch says Tamiflu only shortens the illness by about a day, but it can help prevent complications. He says it’s best when taken soon after the flu starts

Welch says always wash your hands frequently with soap and water, carry around hand sanitizer and if you have to sneeze, do it into your elbow. He says the spread will likely get worse before it gets better, and it’s not to late to get that flu shot…:

State Police are investigating a shooting early this morning in Monroe involving a Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s deputy.  Trooper Michael Reichardt says the incident started after a deputy stopped to assist a stalled vehicle…

Cut 15 (12) “was struck.”

The yet unidentified suspect was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Reichardt says charges are expected to be filed as the investigation continues…

Cut 16  (07)  “point tomorrow.”

Reichardt says more information on the suspect and the deputy involved is expected tomorrow.  Reichardt declined to give the condition of the deputy or who fired the initial shots.

State Police is investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Ouachita Parish. They say preliminary findings suggest an officer was stopping to assist a stalled vehicle, when at some point shots were fired and the suspect struck. They suffered non-life threatening injuries and the investigation is ongoing.

The Saints can win the NFC South with a win over Tampa Bay on Sunday. Playoff seeding is also on the line. If New Orleans is victorious and the Rams win, then the Saints will be the four seed and L-Ais the third seed. The Rams are resting their starters in the regular season finale against San Francisco. There could be an advantage to being the four seed, if you get past the first round, you could play the Eagles in the second round and Philadelphia looks vulnerable with starting quarterback Carson Wentz out for the season.

LSU has two more practices in Baton Rouge and then it’s off to Orlando where they’ll play Notre Dame in the Citrus Bowl. Running back Derius Guice was back at practice yesterday after missing practices last week.

Alabama and Clemson arrive in New Orleans today for the Allstate Sugar Bowl which will be played New Year’s Day night in the Mercedes Benz Superdome.

Its Florida State versus Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl this afternoon. It will be interesting to see what kind of motivation the Seminoles will have. They started out the year thinking about playing for a national championship, instead they went 6-and-6. It’s the final game for Golden Eagles running back Ito Smith, who has rushed for nearly 45-hundred yards in his career.

Karl Scott is the new defensive coordinator at UL Lafayette. The Houston native has coached the defensive backs at Texas Tech the last two seasons. This past season the Red Raiders forced 29 turnovers.

The Pelicans begin a three-game homestand tonight when they host the Brooklyn Nets. New Orleans is 17-and-16 on the year, while the Nets are just 12-and-21 and in last place in the Atlantic Division. Tip-off is at 7 PM.

The only game on the schedule in college basketball tonight, the Lady Tigers host Sam Houston State. Tomorrow, the LSU men’s team is at Memphis and Louisiana Tech is also in action as the Bulldogs are at Western Kentucky for the Conference USA opener.

A study out of MIT shows that drivers who tailgate are actually causing traffic delays and lengthening commutes during peak hours. Traffic Engineer Laurence Lambert of Vectura Consulting says the study shows that tailgating actually causes previously non-existent traffic jams…:

A teenager and man were shot in Baton Rouge during a family brawl stemming from a domestic dispute. 24-year-old James McManus Jr. was arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and aggravated criminal damage to property in connection with the Sunday night shooting. A 14-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

If you’ve ever encountered a “phantom traffic jam,” or traffic slowdown that doesn’t seem to have an apparent cause, it was probably caused by someone tailgating. Researchers at MIT found tailgating does not get you anywhere faster, and it actually causes traffic jams for no reason. Traffic Engineer Laurence Lambert of Vectura Consulting says adding features to future vehicles can fix the problem…:

Napier said Scott fully understands the Ragin Cajuns recruiting footprint with ties in Louisiana, as well as being a Houston native.

The New Orleans Pelicans are hosting the Brooklyn Nets tonight at the Smoothie King Center in their first home game since December 13th. The Pels are going into tonight’s game off three days of rest  following back-to-back blowout victories over the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat last weekend.

The New Orleans Saints can win the NFC South on Sunday in Tampa, but will have to wait a little later to do it. The game, which was originally slated as a noon kickoff, has been moved to a 3:25pm start time. The TV networks are also delaying the start of the Falcons – Panthers game to 3:25pm. If the Saints win or the Panthers lose, New Orleans wins the division.
