A GoFundMe account has been set up for Michael Louviere (Lou-v-air), the Westwego police officer who was fatally shot in Jefferson Parish last week. Reese d’Aquin (DAH-can) is a lifelong friend of the cop and he created a video for the fundraising page telling the story of Louviere’s life…:

Lawmakers are currently meeting to hear the details of the internal audit claiming there was questionable spending within the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries under then-Secretary Robert Barham. In his testimony, Barham says suggestions that there were systemic problems couldn’t be further from the truth. He calls the audit the worst case of Monroe Morning Quarterback he’s ever seen.

The Governor’s Office says Representative Lance Harris’ plan to close the state’s $304 million deficit without a special session would be devastating to state agencies. Spokesperson Richard Carbo says without a special session, cuts would be focused on health care, higher ed, and the department of corrections.

But Harris says the governor can make the necessary budget cuts without the legislature.

Walker Police say a body discovered under an I-12 bridge raises more questions than answers. Capt. John Sharp says crews were clearing debris under the bridge when they made the gruesome discovery.

Sharp says the woman appears to have been dead for at least a week, and they do not know who she is.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the agent who was shot in Morehouse Parish is scheduled to be released from the hospital today. Spokesperson Adam Einck says doctors have been calling 25-year-old Tyler Wheeler a miracle patient for his speedy recovery.

Two Monroe residents are behind bars in connection with the shooting.

Louisiana’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approves more than $1.5 million for teaching residencies. Assistance Superintendent of Talent Hannah Dietsch says 288 teaching mentors in 18 partnering school districts will receive $1,000 stipends.

Dietsch says residents in the program will receive $2,000 stipends as well.

State Police say an 18-wheeler driver was killed in Iberia Parish after crashing into another tractor trailer who was stopped at a railroad crossing. They say 54-year-old Pedro Alvarez of Houston’s load shifted forward after the impact and penetrated the cab of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The LSU men’s basketball team dropped an ugly one last night in the PMAC to SEC rival Florida. The Gators made a school record 19 three-pointers in a 106-71 win over the Tigers. With the loss, LSU falls to 1-7 in conference play.

Louisiana Tech begins a difficult road trip tonight in Birmingham as they visit the UAB Blazers, the defending regular season champs in Conference USA. The Bulldogs bring a season-high four-game winning streak into tonight’s contest and Head Coach Eric Konkol credits tough defense for his team’s recent winning ways..:

More college hoops, Northwestern State snapped Southeastern’s 16-game home winning streak with an 85-74 Southland Conference victory Wednesday in Hammond. The Lions went into the game with the 10th-longest home court win streak in the nation.

In the NBA, Anthony Davis was back on the floor, but the Pels struggled throughout the game against The Thunder and New Orleans ended up falling to OKC 114-105. The loss drops The Pelicans to 2 and a half games back of the NO 8 seed in the Western Conference standings.

The Senior Bowl takes place Saturday at 1:30 in Mobile Alabama. Saints GM Mickey Loomis was asked about the possibility of signing Drew Brees to another extension; Loomis brushed it off saying Brees has already said he plans to play out his final year then they’d go from there. The Saints are taking Seniors off-site for interviews. A source says they signed long snapper Jesse Schmitt of Purdue on Wednesday.

She says $1 million of the investment will go to Louisiana universities that will offer the programs.

Dietsch says the nearly $600-thousand in additional funds will go towards stipends for program participants. She says part of the funds will provide $2,000 stipends to 233 teaching residents.

Harris released his proposal last week as an example of how the state can close a large midyear deficit without tapping tap into the rainy day fund. But Carbo says it is imperative rainy day dollars are used to ease some of the pain of the cuts.

Harris has also said the governor can make the necessary cuts without the need of a special session. But Carbo says without a special session, spending cuts will be focused primarily on health care, higher education and the Department of Corrections.
