Today is the 11 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and some who lost their homes in Katrina are once again dealing with another flood. Trauma psychologist with LSU Health New Orleans Dr. Jennifer Hughes worked at shelter in Baton Rouge earlier this month and spoke with several people
who were already displaced by Katrina and are in the nightmare again:

Tropical Depression Nine is moving toward the west across the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center expects the system to get stronger during the next 48 hours and become a tropical storm later today or tonight. The system is headed west now, but forecasters expect it to turn more to the north and then make a dramatic turn and head for Florida before making landfall around Big Bend Thursday.

Former MCNeese State Quarterback, 23-year-old Daniel Sams of Lake Charles, becomes the 4th person to be arrested in connection with the murder of former McNeese defensive back Aaron Javone Sam. The group is suspected of all being a part of a home invasion on August 12th. Sams faces charges of accessory after the fact to the charges.

There’s one more week left in the preseason and there’s still a lot to work on for the Saints. The team fell to 0-3 in exhibition action with a 27-14 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday. Coach Sean Payton says the play of offensive and defensive lines has him most worried…:

Also in the NFL, former LSU offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins was placed on injured reserve by the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Steelers Depot. Hawkins, a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, injured his a shoulder a few weeks ago and tried to rehab it unsuccessfully. He will sit out the season. Former New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson suffered a season-ending injury in a preseason game for the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.

Two people are dead, including a district fire chief, and over 30 are injured after an illegal immigrant crashed a bus into a fire truck, three firefighters and several cars on I-10 in St. John the Baptist Parish near LaPlace. State Police Trooper Melissa Matey says it happened as another accident was being worked…:

A rear seat passenger in the Camry was killed. One of the firefighters, District Chief Spencer Chauvin, died a short time later after being hit by the bus. Matey says the bus driver, Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez, is an illegal alien from Honduras who was traveling with the group to assist in flood recovery work. He charges include negligent homicide.

The bus also hit two other vehicles during the crash. A passenger in of those vehicles was also killed, 21-year-old Jermaine Starr of Moss Point, Mississippi. Matey says the driver of the bus did not have a driver’s license and faces several charges, including negligent homicide…

Matey the passengers in the bus were headed to the Baton Rouge area seeking work in the flood recovery. Two people, including another fire fighter, suffered critical injuries. The other injuries have been described as minor to moderate.

Early this month, Sharper was sentenced to 18 years in a federal prison after pleading guilty to the raping and drugging 9 women in four states. It’s unclear what Sharper’s legal team will do next.

The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed three more Zika cases in Louisiana. That brings total number of travel associated Zika cases to 26. There have been no known cases of local transmission in Louisiana. LDH says with the flooding in southern part of the state, that in an increase for mosquito borne diseases.

Mike Steele with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says anyone making large donations should call ahead of time to make sure that someone is there to help unload.

The Great Flood of 2016 greatly affected the agriculture business in Louisiana. Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Mike Strain says he expects total losses to be anywhere from 150 to 200 million dollars if the rain stops now. He says some lucky farmers have crop insurance but not all crops or parishes allow insurance.

Charges are pending in the crash that claimed the life of an off duty New Orleans Police officer, according to State Police. 45-year-old Tony Mitchell experienced mechanical problems on an elevated portion of the West Bank Expressway and pulled onto the left shoulder. Mitchell flagged down oncoming traffic so 35-year-old Jennifer Williams, of Waggaman stopped in the left lane. When preparing to move Williams’ vehicle was hit by 23-year-old Corutney Slugher of New Orleans, which then threw Mitchell over the guard rail falling 40 feet to the ground.

The Saints fell to 0-3 in preseason action last night with a 27-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh took control of the game with two touchdowns in the first quarter as the Saints defense couldn’t do much against the Steelers first unit.

Coach Sean Payton said after the game that his biggest concerns are that the defense is not generating much of a pass rush, while New Orleans didn’t do enough to protect the quarterback. Drew Brees was 9-of-12 for 78 yards and a touchdown. Garrett Grayson was intercepted twice. Tim Hightower was the leading Saints rusher with 27 yards and Willie Snead was the leading receiver with four grabs for 58 yards.

Starting offensive tackle Terron (Tur-ron) Armstead left the game with an undisclosed injury and Payton said they’ll provide an update at a later date. The preseason ends on Thursday at home against Baltimore.

 
Bad news for LSU quarterback commitment Lowell Narcisse (Lo-well Nar-cease). The St. James quarterback tore his ACL for a second time. It occurred during the Wildcats jamboree. He tweeted out that an MRI showed he tore the ACL in his left knee. Narcisse tore the ACL in his right knee during the spring game in 2015, but still came back that season to help St. James reach the state championship game.

Former University High of Baton Rouge golfer Patrick Reed has a two stroke lead after two rounds at the Barclays in Farmingdale, New York. Reed is a four-time winner on the P-G-A Tour, but hasn’t won a trophy this year.

Nicholls State ends fall camp this morning with a scrimmage inside John L Guidry Stadium at nine AM. The scrimmage will be around 90 plays.

Preseason camp is over for ULM. First-year coach Matt Viator believes his team has progressed a lot over the course of camp. The Warhawks return to the practice field tomorrow night.
