The US Army agrees to pick up the tab on the burning of the 15-million pounds of M6 propellant improperly stored at Camp Minden in Webster Parish. The Louisiana National Guard received a letter from the Department of Justice saying the Army will pay the $28 million to dispose of the materials. Minden Representative Gene Reynolds says this means the project can finally get up and going…

There had been a dispute about the oversight costs of the cleanup effort. Reynolds says the Army will negotiate for those costs. He says once the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed on the contract, he expects work to begin on the site almost immediately…

The M6 will be disposed through a closed burn on the Camp Minden grounds. Although no specific timeline has been set for the destruction of the propellant, Reynolds is glad that there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel…

Saturday and Sunday is the 2015 Louisiana Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday. Hurricane Season starts Monday and Department of Revenue spokeswoman Kizzy Payton says this weekend Louisiana residents can purchase preparedness items without having to pay the 4 percent state sales tax…:

Payton says eligible items include self powered light sources and radios, gas or diesel fuel tanks, most all types of batteries including those for cell phones, storm shutter devices and more…:

Legal analyst Chick Foret says Sharper’s “global” plea deal limits his sentence to 9 years, which Judge Jane Milazzo can choose to accept or reject…

Sharper is scheduled for sentencing on August 20th. Foret says the hearing was pretty standard. He says the government read into the record the factual basis of Sharper’s case and also talked about the co-defendants in this case, Erik Nunez and Brandon Licciardi…

In a bizarre incident, Baton Rouge Police report a man wielding an ax went after a police officer. Spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely says officers responded to a call about 41-year-old Deandre Trahan walking around and attempting to burglarize homes. He says after an officer located Trahan and called for backup. McKneely says when the officer stepped out of his car, Trahan attacked him while holding the ax…

McKneely says Trahan overpowered the officer and fled in the police unit. He says they used GPS to locate the cruiser in West Baton Rouge Parish. McKneely says spike strips were deployed to disable the car…

Additional charges could follow.  The officer received moderate injuries in the incident and has been released from the hospital. In a bizarre incident, Baton Rouge Police report a man wielding an axe went after a police officer then stole his cop car. Spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKneely says they got a report that 41-year-old Deandre Trahan walking around and attempting to burglarize homes. He says after an officer located Trahan who then attacked him while the axe…:

He says once Trahan was located he was tazed several times then booked with armed robbery and criminal damage to property with further charges pending. The officer has been released from the hospital.

Governor Bobby Jindal says if the medical marijuana bill that is moving through the legislature right now by New Iberia Senator Fred Mills makes it to his desk, he will sign it. Jindal the proposal met the criteria that marijuana distribution be for a legitimate medical purpose.

The National Guard received the notification in a letter from the Department of Justice.

In a federal courtroom in New Orleans, former NFL player and a member of the Saints Super Bowl team Darren Sharper plead guility to drugging and raping women. His sentencing is set for August 20th. Legal analysts say it’s possible he’ll get a nine year sentence that will run concurrently with the sentence that’s he’s already agreed upon in three other states.

And an Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge has decided to keep the public out of the court proceedings that will determine if Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson is competent to make important business decisions regarding his professional sports franchises. The red is expected to crest at levels not seen in 25 years by June 5th in the Shreveport area. Lt. In New Orleans, former Saints star Darren Sharper has officially pleaded guilty to rape and drug charges in federal court. A nine year prison sentence is part of the plea deal. Sharper faces similar charges in other states and exact details of the apparent “global” plea deal are not being disclosed until he’s sentenced in all of his cases.

In the Senate Thursday lawmakers put a $60 million dollar fee increase on two House bills that would mean drivers pay $50 more in title fees when buying a car. Also being discussed is a nearly $40 increase in the cost of a driver’s license as part of ongoing budget balancing proposals.

A House committee has voted down New Orleans Senator Ed Murray’s equal pay bill. Murray’s legislation would ensure that all employees receive the same pay for the same work. It was approved by the Senate on a 21-16 vote, but the House Labor Committee voted 8-5 against the proposal. This is the third equal pay bill the committee has killed this legislative session.

The eighth ranked LSU softball team got off to a good start at the Women’s College World Series as the Tigers defeated Auburn six to one. As a team, the Tigers had ten hits on the day, which was plenty enough offense for starting pitcher Carley Hoover. The Tigers will play in a winner’s bracket game tonight at six against defending national champion, Florida. You can watch the game live on ESPN2.

UL Lafayette will take on Rice at 2:30 this afternoon in the opening contest of the Houston Regional. Coach Tony Robichaux says right hander Wyatt Marks will start on the hill. Gunner Leger has been the Cajuns best starting pitching this season, but Robichaux will wait to use him later in the weekend to preserve his arm…

And it looks like the regular season finale against Texas A-and-M will be played on a Saturday. That’s because CBS has already picked Arkansas-versus-Missouri for that Friday after Thanksgiving.
