State Climatologist Barry Keim says it will usher in very dry and cool Canadian air and will stick around for a few days. Louisiana State Police host their first-ever Securing Louisiana Cyber Summit at its  Training Academy today from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today. Trooper Christian Reed says the goal is to provide insight into the growing threat of cybersecurity on small businesses and critical infrastructure.

With several sessions featuring both in-person and virtual experiences, the summit will explore cybersecurity requirements and best practices to improve business security. Reed says cybersecurity leaders and experts will discuss strategies on how to maximize security.

Willis-Knighton Medical Center in Shreveport has been recognized as the top hospital in Louisiana by Newsweek magazine. Senior Vice President of Quality and Clinical Performance Clarie Rebouche says this recognition is a testament to the work of the staff and their patient care.

The ranking of Newsweek’s Best-in-State Hospitals 2024 recognizes 600 leading hospitals across the nation.

The family of Ronnie Caldwell, the Northwestern State football player who was killed on October 12th, will file a lawsuit against the school this week.  Three days before he was killed Caldwell told his parents his roommate 27-year-old John McIntosh threatened him with a gun. They asked coach Brad Laird to move Ronnie to another location. Attorney Troy Pradia says if Laird had only called the cops on McIntosh…

The family says Laird assured them he would help but nothing happened and the next time they heard from him was a phone call that Ronnie was dead.

While fighting back tears, Ronnie’s mother Blanche Caldwell says they trusted the school to protect him…

Caldwell moved from his original apartment due to mold and was placed with McIntosh at The Quad Apartments, owned by Campus Advantage. Pradia says McIntosh was not a student and had a criminal history.

McIntosh has been charged with possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance. He’s been released on bond from the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center.

One of Caldwell’s ex-teammates, 22-year-old Maurice Campbell, II has also been arrested on obstruction of justice and gun and drug charges.

Louisiana’s Gaming Control Board has approved the transfer of the gaming license of the abandoned Bossier City Diamond Jacks Casino to the Cordish Companies. Cordish is a leader in the gaming development industry. Gaming Control Board Chair Ronnie Johns says Cordish will take over in the renovation of Diamond Jacks.

Diamond Jacks Casino closed in 2020 amid the impacts of the pandemic. Cordish Live! brands several sports and entertainment destinations such as Texas Live! Kansas City Live! and Bally Sports Live! in St. Louis, Missouri.

Johns says Cordish has begun renovation on the massive 77 thousand square feet gaming, entertainment, and dining venue.

If you’re planning on traveling Interstate 55 southbound lanes, you may see contractors mobilizing equipment between Ponchatoula and LaPlace over the next two weeks. DOTD Spokesperson Rodney Mallet says crews will begin repair work on the southbound lanes where the accident occurred starting this weekend.

Interstate 55 southbound lanes reopened Thursday following the massive 168-vehicle pileup that killed at least eight people and injured 63. The southbound lanes will merge to one lane for nearly 500 yards near mile marker 14 near the site of Monday’s accident. 

Mallet says the northbound portion of Interstate 55 is completely closed.

DOTD and inspectors are analyzing data on the extent of the damage to the northbound lanes of the bridge. Mallet says questions remain as to what can be done during foggy conditions that create extreme hazards on the highway.

After an animal hoarding situation of 53 cats was discovered in New Iberia last Saturday, the Human Society of Louisiana is asking for contributions to cover medical expenses. HSLA Director Jeff Dorson says the cats were living in a home with deplorable conditions.

The month of September proved to be lucky for sports betting in Louisiana. State Gaming Board Chair Ronnie Johns says it was the most profitable on record since the inception of mobile sports betting in the Bayou State. He says the state has surpassed more than $ 4 billion in wagering.

In Louisiana, it’s generated over $60 million for the state since legalized sports betting went live in October of 2021. The following year mobile wagering kicked off. Johns says mobile sports betting makes up 85% of wagering in Louisiana.

Parlays are popular among sports gamblers which accounted for $20 million, and Johns says it’s football, at $7-milllion that truly motivates gamblers in the Bayou State. He says the numbers for August and September were significant.

Johns says they are watching the numbers and also working closely with the Association of Compulsive Gambling.

The House Education Committee rejected BESE’s graduation appeals policy in an eight to three vote on Thursday. The proposal would give seniors an appeals option if they do not pass the LEAP exit exam. State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley believes the appeals process is bad policy for Louisiana…

The policy was originally passed by BESE in June. There are eight states that require the passage of a standardized test to graduate and Louisiana is the only one that does not offer an appeals requirement.

U-S Senator John Kennedy also opposed the policy. The junior senator taped a video message for the committee and says the policy waters down graduation standards.

Louisiana Federation of Teachers Legislative Director Cynthia Posey spoke in favor of the appeals process. She says currenlty the state does not meet every student where they are.

The Committee has four days to send its report to Governor John Bel Edwards for review. Edwards would have 10 days to approve or disapprove. New BESE members will be sworn in in January and the state’s highest education board will take another at this proposed policy that would allow for appeals.

Northwestern State has canceled the remainder of its football season and head coach Brad Laird has resigned after Junior Safety Ronnie Caldwell was killed two weeks ago. In a Natchitoches Parish Journal podcast, NSU President Marcus Jones said several players expressed difficulty with Caldwell’s death.

With four games left in the season, the Demons had yet to win any of their six games and opted not to play their October 14^th game against Nicholls, two days after Caldwell’s death.

Jones was asked if there were other players and coaches who wanted to finish the season noting that the cancellation impacts the Southland Conference and revenue for Natchitoches.

Brandon Jolly was among the motorists involved in Monday morning’s horrific car pile-up on Interstate 55 in St. John the Baptist Parish. Jolly says he was traveling south and the fog intensified once he reached Lake Maurepas and it was a miracle he wasn’t initially hit or hit anyone else.

Eight people died in the pile-up that occurred in both the north and southbound lanes of the interstate.

Jolly says while he drives long-distance for a living, even driving 50 miles per hour, well below the posted speed limit of 70, that morning didn’t change the outcome.

While trapped on the interstate, Jolly says it was surreal when people would emerge from the fog looking for help. He says a woman who worked with a fire department approached him and they began to pull people out of cars.  And while he didn’t see any fatalities in his immediate area…

Authorities say the morning fog combined with smoke from marsh fires severely limited visibility which sparked a chain reaction of multiple crashes. Eight people died, including a six-year-old boy from Madisonville.

DOTD announced the southbound side of Interstate 55 in Saint John the Baptist Parish has reopened following the massive vehicle pileup involving 168 vehicles that killed at least eight people and injured 63 people. Spokesperson Rodney Mallet says inspectors have determined the majority of the southbound portion of the roadway is safe for travel.

Specialized equipment such as a ground penetrating radar was used as part of the inspection process.

Mallet says inspectors continue to assess damage to the bridge on the northbound portion of Interstate 55. He says areas on the northbound portion had to be cleaned before inspection.

.Mallet says the right lane remains closed for about a half-mile stretch on I-55 South near the Manchac exit…

The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors names Doctor Jim Henderson as the new president of Louisiana Tech. Henderson will leave his job as U-L System president and he looks to build on what he calls the best undergraduate scholarship program in the state

Congressman Mike Johnson is the 56^th Speaker of the U-S House of Representatives and he’s only been in Congress for six years. The Advocate Bureau Chief Mark Ballard says Johnson’s low profile may have worked in his favor.

Johnson won the final ballot after his predecessors Congressman Steve Scalise, Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota, bid for the position tanked.

Johnson is a conservative who received the backing of former President Donald Trump. Ballard expects Johnson’s social conservatism to add to his approach in this role.

State Police say vehicles involved in the massive car pileup on Interstate 55 in Saint John the Baptist Parish on Monday have been removed and cleanup is underway. Sergeant Kate Stegall says the bridge had to be cleared before inspectors could assess the damage.

Authorities say eight people died, 63 people were injured, and 168 vehicles were involved in the crash.

Department of Transportation will be using specialized equipment, such as ground penetrating radar as part of the inspection process. Stegall says reopening the roadway will be coordinated pending the results of the inspection.

Stegall says troopers are working to make sure all vehicles involved in the crash are accounted for. She urges anyone involved who wants to retrieve their vehicle or personal items to contact Troop B before going to the tow company.

The state Department of Transportation needed approval from lawmakers to enter into a public-private partnership that would lead to the construction of the new bridge.

800-million in federal and state dollars would go towards construction costs and tolls would pay for the rest of the bridge. Farnum says tolls are only used in the United States when you are building a new highway

Kelly said cornerback Zy Alexander and defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo will “miss some time.” It’s unclear if they will play against Alabama. Cornerbacks Duce Chestnut and Denver Harris remain inactive, so LSU is very thin at corner.

The State Fire Marshall is investigating a fatal brush fire that resulted in the discovery of a man’s body in Alexandria on Monday. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry crews were called in to assist due to the size of the brush fire.

The fire was reported in the 6100 block of LA 488. Rodrigue says the victim is believed in his 60s and is the homeowner.

Mardi Gras 2024 receives the green light in Shreveport after security concerns put the annual event in peril. Mayor Tom Arceneaux made the announcement this morning alongside Krewe members of Centaur and Gemini.

Arceneaux says the parades will roll their full routes and they will have enough police and fire personnel to support the parades.

On February 3^rd, both the Krewe of Centaur and African American History parades will be on the same day. The African American parade will roll at 11 a.m. and Centaur at 2:45 p.m. On February 10^th the Krewe of Gemini parade will begin at 2:45 p.m.

Stacy Brown with Visit Shreveport-Bossier says about 225,000 attend their five Mardi Gras parades and about 41 percent of them are out-of-town visitors.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith says even though the amount of officers won’t be what they’ve had in the past they will be able to provide support for all parades. He says they’ll have about 75 to 100 officers for the African American History parade, and he hopes to exceed 200 officers for the others.

U.S. Representative Mike Johnson from Benton will make his case before House Republicans today to be the next Speaker of the House. Eight other Republicans are also seeking the post. LSU Political Science Professor Robert Hogan says Johnson’s chances are as good as the other candidates

Johnson’s announcement comes after Louisiana’s Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan of Ohio failed short of the 217 votes needed as House Speaker.

He serves as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference. Hogan says having GOP leadership in the chamber should help Johnson’s chances.

Johnson is also a member of the House Judiciary Committee.

The House has been without a speaker since early October as Republicans can’t get on the same page to elect a replacement for Kevin McCarthy. Hogan says Johnson has been one of the more conservative members of Congress and that may help him out in his quest to be the next speaker.

A second person has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Northwestern State football player Ronnie Caldwell. Natchitoches police spokesperson John Greely says a former teammate of Caldwell’s, 22-year-old Maurice Campbell of Memphis, has been booked on multiple charges

Campbell was a defensive tackle for Northwestern State and appeared in four games this season. He’s no longer on the team.

Caldwell’s roommate has also been charged for having a firearm in the presence of a controlled substance.

No one has been charged with murder, but Greely says Campbell interfered with the investigation

Two people are reportedly dead after a massive pile-up on Interstate 55 in Saint John the Baptist Parish. Reports say hundreds of vehicles are involved. The interstate in both directions is closed and first responders from multiple agencies are on-site. State Police Sergeant Kate Stegall says fog and smoke from nearby marsh fires led to very low visibility

The number of people looking for work, but unable to find a job reached an all-time low in September, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nearly 68-thousand people were considered unemployed. The state’s unemployment rate held steady at three-point-three percent, tying a record low. University of Louisiana at Lafayette Economist Gary Wagner says hiring has escalated over the last year…

Wagner says the state has added nearly 280 thousand jobs since the worst of the pandemic. He says the state’s employment growth level is still recovering from the pandemic.

The Louisiana Policy Institute for Children’s 2023 Parent Poll is open. Institute Director Dr. Libbie Sonnier says the poll is a way to check on how families with children 5 years and under are doing. They’ve partnered with the Louisiana Department of Education to gather important data.

Orleans Parish D-A Jason Williams is grateful he and his 78-year-old mother were not injured after being carjacked in the Lower Garden District Monday night. Williams says it all happened in a matter of seconds.

Two armed men approached Williams as he was helping his mother out of his black Lincoln Navigator in the 1000 block of Race Street. At that moment, Williams says his thoughts went to Linda Frickey and his greatest concern was his mother.

Four people carjacked 73-year-old Linda Frickey last year in the Mid-City area of New Orleans. Frickey was caught in the seatbelt as assailants drove off in her vehicle — dragging her for a block.

Carjackings are down by 44% since the end of August, compared to the same time last year, according to a report by the Metropolitan Crime Commission. Williams says progress has been made but everyone must continue to take precautions.

Walker Police have arrested two people involved in the murder 60-year-oid woman who was discovered dead in a wooded area of Livingston Parish. Captain John Sharp says they believe 30-year-old Bobby Schneider of Gonzales killed Sarah Santini in her home…

56-year-old Gregory Baker of Ascension Parish was also arrested. Investigators says Baker helped Schneider dispose of Santini’s body. A motive for the murder has not been established. Sharp says Schneider and Santini were friends.

Santini was reported missing on October 7th and when police went to her home they knew something bad happened…

Santini’s vehicle was found abandoned in LaPlace on October 12th. Her body was found Thursday by a Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputy off of Louisiana Highway 63. Santini says about 24 hours later they arrested Schneider and Baker…

The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the number of unemployed people looking for a job, but can’t find one, is a record low 67-thousand people. This number comes from September jobs released by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. LWC Chief Economist Emily Dipalma says Louisiana residents are showing they want to go to work
