Tuesday Baton Rouge Mayor President Kip Holden criticized Governor Bobby Jindal for going to the Mexico border to discuss safety issues there. The Governors office issued a statement last night in response saying they believe the Mayor is wrong and that an unsecured border with Mexico does have an impact in Louisiana with the potential of gangs and drugs coming here. Jindal added it is shortsighted of Holden to say that illegal immigrants and an unsecured border do not have an impact on Louisiana.

Top officials with Cleco are expected to appear today at the Public Service Commission meeting to answer questions regarding a possible sale of the utility company. Commissioner Eric Skrmetta says they think there are some companies that believe Cleco is a powerful asset…

Crape myrtles in Louisiana are under attack from a new invasive species. Crape myrtle barkscales, the invasive bug, are infesting trees across north Louisiana, and feeding off of the popular summer flowering tree. LSU AgCenter horticulturist Allen Owings says the bug is tough to control and even seems to be resistant to weather…:

A woman from Rayne whose four children perished in a mobile home fire while she was out at a Church Point nightclub in 2012 has been sentenced to eight years in prison with no benefit of probation or parole. Shaqueta McDade pleaded no contest to four counts of negligent homicide. All of the children were under the age of eight.

Authorities have arrested a West Monroe man for possession of pornography involving juveniles. A joint investigation with the Louisiana State Police, the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI lead to the arrest of 44-year-old Robert Scott. Scott admitted to downloading child pornography for the last five years. He was booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Facility.
