State Police are investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting in West Baton Rouge Parish on I-10 Sunday. Trooper Christian Reed says DOTD Motorist Assistance Patrol unit stopped to render aid to a broken down driver, and that driver stabbed the man to death. Deputies arrived to witness the attack and Reed says they used deadly force to stop it…:

The assailant has not yet been identified. The victim is Darrell Guillory, who was also a former Baton Rouge cop. LSP is investigating.

Raymond Blanco, the former First Gentleman and husband of Governor Kathleen Blanco, has passed away. The man known as “Coach” to so many was also a former vice president of U.L. Lafayette and coached football for decades. His wife preceded him in passing back in 2019. Raymond “Coach” Blanco was 87.

 

As folks prepare to hit the highway for the Thanksgiving holiday, Louisiana AAA reminds us all of the state’s “Move Over” law. Apparently only about 1 in 4 are aware that when police , tow trucks or broken down vehicles are on the roadside, we are supposed to move over into the furthest lane or slow down if we cannot change lanes.

A violent weekend in New Orleans. NOPD says there was a one murder, three armed robberies and four armed carjackings. Police are investigating all these incidents. Crime in the Crescent City continues to increase.

 

A state Department of Transportation employee is dead and so is the man who authorities say attacked him during a bizarre incident on Interstate 10 in Port Allen just before noon yesterday. State Police Trooper Christian Reed says West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Deputies were the first to respond..:

New labor statistics show Louisiana has again posted a new record low unemployment rate. Louisiana Workforce Commission Supervisor for Employment Statistics Mark Jones says the numbers are tremendous news…:

The head of Louisiana’s Office of Juvenile Justice has resigned. O.J.J. has been plagued lately with violent incidents at juvenile detention centers, plus riots, breakouts and other problems. William Summer has led the agency since 2020. His resignation is immediate. A statement from the Governor’s Office says Curtis Nelson will take over immediately at O.J.J.

After considering the matter, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy says he will NOT run for governor next fall. What do politicos think of that…?

Governor John Bel Edwards gave away the younger of his two daughters today, at a wedding held in Baton Rouge. A reception follows at the Governor’s Mansion. On his monthly “Ask The Governor” radio show, Mr. Edwards says the groom – Christopher Bates – had to ask him for daughter Sarah’s hand…:

The Golden Band from Tigerland is the first marching band to ever get a Grammy nomination. The band recorded the album “Full Circle” with artists and former Tiger band member Sean Ardoin last spring, and it’s nominated for Best Regional Roots Music Album. LSU Band Director Dr. Kelvin Jones says just the nomination is a huge honor…:

He had been thinking about it, but Louisiana U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy says he’s decided NOT to run for Governor next year. U.L. Monroe political science professor Pearson Cross says it’s not a surprise when one considers Senator John Kennedy’s potential interest in the job. Cross says running against a man who won his last election with 62-percent of the vote is something to consider heavily…:

Cassidy still has 4 more years in his term in the Senate.

There will be a wedding reception tonight at the governor’s mansion as John Bel Edwards youngest daughter Sarah Ellen marries her longtime sweetheart from Benton. Governor John Bel Edwards says he will give Sarah Ellen away at a ceremony at St. Joseph Cathedral in downtown Baton Rouge…:

State Police say a 3-year-old child – riding unrestrained in a vehicle – was killed in a crash last night in Vernon Parish. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt. The driver had life-threatening injuries from the crash and two other passengers were treated for less serious injuries. Sadly the toddler died en-route to a hospital.

Ever since Elon Musk bought Twitter, disgruntled employees have been resigning in masses, leaving some wondering if Twitter may be on its way out. Haggai Davis hosts the Baton Rouge-based “Tech Gumbo” podcast. He says the employees to fret over losing are the engineers, because that could compromise Twitter’s cybersecurity…:

“#RIP Twitter” is currently trending. Musk says he’s not worried about the employees who’ve left and usage is at all-time highs currently. Davis feels talk of Twitter’s demise is wishful think for some.

Cassidy points out he is the ranking Republican member in a powerful senate committee on health care, education, employment, and retirement. Cross says Cassidy’s history of bi-partisanship will be helpful as well.

Could Twitter be going away anytime soon? Mass resignations at the social media platform owned by Elon Musk threaten its ability to function. Baton Rouge’s Haggai Davis is co-host of the “Tech Gumbo” podcast. He says predicting an actual shutdown is a bit extreme…:

Another person has entered the race to be Louisiana’s next governor; Mandeville Republican state Representative Richard Nelson says he will run on a platform of progress for the state via tax reforms, which includes ending state sales tax. At 36 years of age, he feels youth is to his advantage…:

Nelson joins Attorney General Jeff Landry in making his intentions public. At least six others are interested but have not made a final decision.

A Livingston parish school teacher is arrested for alleged inappropriate behavior with students. 23-year-old Kayla Calicott is accused of sending explicit texts to one student and gifting another with a vape pen. Calicott reportedly has resigned her job at Denham Springs High.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell went off on FOX 8 investigative reporter Lee Zurik, after he questioned her about time spent in a city-owned French Quarter apartment with a New Orleans cop. Zurik has been running a series of reports pertaining to Cantrell’s use of a city-owned apartment and has more than 600 hours of recordings of her entering and leaving. Cantrell dismissed Zurik when he asked a follow-up question…:

The city’s inspector general has also launched an investigation into Cantrell’s use of the apartment.

Candidates for Louisiana Governor are starting to pop up left and right, ever since Senators Kennedy and Cassidy admitted they are weighing the idea. The latest of Mandeville state Representative Richard nelson, who says, if elected, he’d work to end state income tax…:

Rapides Parish deputies arrest an elderly Oklahoma man, after finding 90 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle. 73-year-old Thomas Huynh was pulled over on I-49, and the officer detected the smell of weed, which was seized. Huynh says he was paid to deliver the pot to New Orleans. He was booked and released on bond.

It’s felt more like January instead of November and the chilly weather is not going away anytime soon…:

The state Office of Juvenile Justice is asking juvenile court judges’ permission to release certain low-risk offenders to parole, to make room in facilities for more incoming violent kids. A number of local DA’s signed off on the letter; saying they badly need the space in juvenile centers.

 

If you were hoping Louisiana would get a break from the chilly temperatures, well…it won’t.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says overnight lows could get down near freezing over most of the state through Saturday, when another cold front moves in…:

Teri Wright’s combined salaries from both jobs is reportedly over $2350-thousand. Wright is on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

State health officials say more people in Louisiana are getting the flu this year, and they’re getting it early…:

It seems the question isn’t “who is running for Governor next year?” but rather “who isn’t running?” A.G. Jeff Landry has the state GOP endorsement, but now both U.S. Senators, John Kennedy and Bill Cassidy say they are seriously considering getting in. Both says they’ll announce their intentions by the weekend. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser, s Treasurer John Schroder, state Senator Sharon Hewitt and more are reportedly considering it.

 

Two Louisiana members of Congress are preparing for bigger roles when the 118th Congress convenes next year. District 1 Congressman Steve Scalise will be the House Majority Leader. He says he’ll work on crime, inflation and the border…:

District 4 Congressman Mike Johnson, who was re-elected without an opponent, will be vice-chair of the House Republican Caucus. He says it will give Louisiana a stronger voice on committee assignments and such…:

New Orleans cops investigating a man hit and killed by a train found the victim was actually shot first, then left on the train tracks to die. A murder investigation is now underway.
