For the first time ever, Americans are expected to buy more bottled water than carbonated beverages this year, according to the market research firm Euromonitor. LSU Health New Orleans Professor of Family Medicine Dr. Herbert Muncie says it’s good news that people are trying to stay away from high calorie sodas.

cut 4  (09)  “balance”

The projection finds Americans will buy 27 gallons of bottled water over 26 gallons of soda, a year. Muncie says we’ve been seeing this trend slowly creeping up over the last few years and he expects it to continue. He says besides the health benefits, many people are switching to bottled water because recent tap water quality scares in other states.

Cut 5  (10)  “fill it”

Muncie says parents should be influencing their kids to pick up a water bottle rather than a soda.

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is leading in the national polls over Donald Trump, so could that affect the U.S. Senate race in Louisiana? University of Louisiana at Lafayette Political Science Professor Pearson Cross doesn’t think it will have much impact, because there are many highly qualified GOP candidates on the ballot.

But Cross expects Republican candidates will stay away from supporting Trump, if he continues to drop in the polls.

Cross says he’d be surprised if we saw voter turnout as high as 55-percent because both presidential candidates have such high unfavorability ratings. He says there is a chance that the Democrats in the race for Senate might be able to capitalize from Trump’s problems with popularity.

Former four-term governor Edwin Edwards says he is well on his way to becoming the oldest governor of Louisiana, as he just turned 89-years-old on Sunday. Edwards is still moving around quite well for someone who is pushing 90. Former-governor Jimmy Davis lived to be Louisiana’s oldest living former governor. He died at the age of 102 in 2000. Edwards says he believes he’ll live to see 100. He says lifestyle contributes to a person’s ability to get around in their later years.

cut 14 (10)  “my diet”

Edwards was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for 26 counts of racketeering, extortion, money laundering, and fraud. He says the judges probably thought it would be a life sentence, but he was released in 2011. He says the sentence killed him politically, but not physically.
