The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign goes through the Labor Day weekend. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission Spokesperson Greg Fischer is encouraging drivers to be sober behind the wheel and says if you do drink, do it responsibly.

If you ARE hitting the road for Labor Day Weekend, Triple-A says expect to pay an average of $3.40 a gallon for regular gas in the Gulf south. Fuel analyst Don Redman says in Louisiana, Texas, and Alabama this weekend will see prices range between $3.30 and $3.40 a gallon of regular gas.

The LSU Florida State game is set for tomorrow night in Orlando. It’s the only top ten match up this weekend. Even though, the game is technically being played in a neutral site, LSU Coach Brian Kelly says they’re prepared for a hostile environment.

Due to ongoing wildfires, state officials are urging Louisiana residents not to light a flame outside, not even to fire up the grill for Labor Day! Ag and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says adhering to the statewide burn ban is imperative.

 A nightmare start to the high school football season last night in Port Allen. A teenager is dead, a 28 year old man injured after a shooting at the game between rivals Brusly and Port Allen. The shooting, that happened near the concession stand during halftime sent fans running for the exits. At last report, no arrest had been made.

It may be Labor Day weekend, but wildfires continue to burn in Louisiana, mostly in the southwest part of the state. Louisiana Ag and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says even with rainfall in the forecast for parts of the state, the danger of more wildfires isn’t over and lightning could be a threat. (:16)

Data out of LSU shows 38 people in Louisiana died in crashes over Labor Day weekend between 2017 and 2021.

It’s also a big weekend for hunters in Louisiana. The 2nd Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is back after a four year hiatus. That means you won’t have to pay the state sales tax when you purchase firearms, ammunition and certain other hunting supplies. The event was suspended in 2018 due to budget shortfalls, but state lawmakers brought it back earlier this year. The sales tax holiday runs through tomorrow. Southeastern Louisiana is the preseason favorite in the Southland and the Lions start the season in Starkville by taking on Mississippi State. McNeese begins its 80th season of football by hosting Tarleton. Grambling is in New Jersey playing Hampton in the inaugural Prudential Brick City Kickoff Classic.

High school f0otball last night, Lafayette Christian over Acadiana 61-38, Marksville beat Avoyelles 33-28, Bogalusa beat Franklinton 36-31, Parkway outscored Minden 43-41. Pineville beat Winnfield 20-14, Warren Easton over Ruston 20-19, Ouachita edged Rummel 21-20. The Brusly Port Allen game ended at halftime because of a fatal shooting near the concession stand.

Gas-wise expect to pay around $3.70 for a gallon of regular gas, but the biggest concern is whether there will even be gasoline in certain areas of the Sunshine State.

There were many questions going into last year about the team’s offensive line, but star left tackle Will Campbell is entering another year with the team. He says where he is mentally starting the New Year against Florida State.

ULM plays Army this weekend for their season opener. Last year, Army beat the War Hawks 48-24, backed behind the triple option offense. ULM head coach Terry Bowden says they knew the team was playing the unusual style of football, but now it’s a bit different.

Around the state with college football. The Ragin Cajun play Northwestern State on Saturday at 7:30 pm. Louisiana Tech plays their second game against SMU in Dallas.

SMU actually joined the ACC along with California and Stanford, and they will be official members of the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024.

Southeastern takes on Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi. McNeese State plays Tarleton, and Grambling State plays that Hampton Pirates.

Tulane also plays in New Orleans against South Alabama.

In 2021, 349 people died in crashes in Louisiana where a driver had been drinking, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Fischer says polysubstance abuse is a huge problem and it presents a greater challenge.

Fischer says there’s a responsible way to enjoy the holiday safely by planning for a sober driver. He said to keep an eye on your friends and step up if needed.

Hunters, listen up. This weekend you don’t have to pay the state sales tax when you purchase firearms, ammunition and certain hunting supplies. The Louisiana Legislature approved legislation earlier this year that brought back the 2nd Amendment Sales Tax Holiday which goes through Sunday. The sales tax holiday was suspended in 2018 because of a state budget shortfall.
