The nation’s highest court is allowing a legal challenge against the current congressional map to move forward. The plaintiffs have sued the state for having only one majority-minority district, despite a 33-percent black voting population.

The state Democratic party has endorsed Shawn Wilson for governor. Brooke Thorington has more.

The final results are in on the Jell-O Shot challenge at Rocco’s Pizza and Cantina in Omaha. LSU fans purchased a whopping 68,888 Jell-O shots, a record that will be hard to beat. The manager at Rocco’s says the contest helped raise money for university food panties, so LSU’s Food Pantry is expected to receive 60-thousand dolalrs.

The Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee usually holds off on endorsing a candidate until after qualifying, which is in August. ULM Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says the endorsement can be beneficial for fundraising, but voters are usually not swayed by them…

The official endorsement of Wilson puts to rest rumors that state party chairwoman Katie Bernhardt will run for the state’s highest office. And former US Senate candidate Gary Chambers also endorses Wilson.

The U.S. Supreme Court has kicked a case challenging Louisiana’s 2022 Congressional district map back to Louisiana, meaning it will either be decided by a federal judge in Baton Rouge or by the state legislature. Plaintiffs sued because the map does not have 2 black majority congressional voting districts, which would reflect the state’s 32-percent black population. District 2 Congressman Troy Carter says this sends the message that Louisiana needs to “get it right”…:

The Supreme Court’s release of a hold on the case means it now returns to Louisiana, where it can either be decided in a state courtroom, or by a new district map drawn by state lawmakers. Congressman Carter says, if the state has a 32-percent black population, then two of its six congressional districts should reflect majority black voter strength…:

A second majority-minority district would likely start in north Louisiana, taking in heavily black parishes along the Mississippi River and stretching into areas north of Baton Rouge and adjacent to parts of Carter’s District 2. Carter says as the state’s population shifts and changes, voter representation needs to change with it…:

Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board are set to select/crown the next king or queen at the 16th Annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off later today. Nungesser says the culinary competition will feature a dozen chefs from across the state.

After being held in Lafayette for the past five years, this year’s competition is moving to Lake Charles to help the city recover from the hurricanes. The chefs draw their cooking order the night before. Nungesser says the culinary creators have an hour to do their best.

Nungesser says the winner will have the opportunity to represent the state at a variety of events.

The head of the New Orleans 9-1-1 emergency system is stepping down after an accident in his taxpayer-provided car. Tyrell Morris failed to submit to a required drug and alcohol screening after the May 7th crash. Morris issued a statement that he needed to work on his mental health.

A project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed to lower the risk of flooding by elevating homes along the coast of Southwest Louisiana has already received $300 million dollars in funding…

News of the Supreme Court of the United States lifting of a hold on Louisiana’s Congressional map case makes it highly likely the map will be redrawn to have two black-majority-district instead of one. Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis was among the voters who sued the state because the map was not indicative of the state’s 33-percent Black population.

The case can resume a hearing in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

All-state Quarterback Daniel Beale from Catholic High in Baton Rouge has committed to the Ragin Cajuns. He’s six-foot-two, 190 pounds and is coming off a season in which he threw for 26-hundred yards and 38 touchdowns. Beale also has offers from Tulane, Louisiana Tech, Houston and Memphis.

Ouachita Christian star Tate Hamby has committed to Vanderbilt. He projects as a safety in college. He’s also a state champ in the long jump.

Former Ragin Cajuns pitcher Spencer Arrighetti continues to move up in the Houston Astros farm system. The 23-year-old has been promoted from Double-A Corpus Christi to Triple-A Sugar Land. At Corpus Christi, he had a 4.15 ERA and 79 strikeouts and 23 walks in 60.2 innings pitched.

The SEC announced the home and away opponents for men’s basketball teams for the 2023-24 league schedule. The Tigers home and away opponents are Alabama, Arkansas, Texas A-and-M, Georgia and Vanderbilt. LSU will host Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Missouri. They will go on the road to play Auburn, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.

An excessive heat warning is posted for the entire state this week, as Louisiana copes with the first extended heat wave of the summer. LRN Meteorologist John Wetherbee says we hit triple digit “feels like” temperatures today, and could see 115 tomorrow. He says problems rise up fast when it gets this hot…:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has received hundreds of millions of dollars to elevate homes and businesses in Southwest Louisiana. Corp of Engineers Senior Project Manager Darrel Broussard says this money will be used to elevate at-risk structures…:

Well-known injury lawyer Gordon McKernon opened up his wallet and pushed LSU WAY over the top in the Jell-O Shot Challenger for College World Series fans at Rocco’s Pizza in Omaha. McKernon bought nearly 8900 shots to push the total over 50-thousand sold. Part of the cost of each shot goes to local food banks.

The U.S. Supreme Court lifts a hold on Louisiana’s congressional map; submitted last year. Public Service Commission member Devonte Lewis was among those suing the state over the new map. He says the case was before the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals WHEN the High Court put a hold on it…:
