Louisiana Urban League along with the National Association of Auto Dealers will launch a new automotive technician apprenticeship program for minorities today. The pilot program will train and employ twelve candidates in New Orleans and nine in Baton Rouge to become licensed auto technicians. LADA’s President, Will Green says the program is off to a great start and trainees have already started skill-building classes.

The Human Services leaders were under pressure by U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy during a Senate Finance Committee hearing regarding the number of full-time workers on-site during the workday. Louisiana’s senior senator questioned HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra (Ba-cerra) if the agency was still monitoring VPN data that would indicate if employees were accessing their email or not.

Two New Orleans contract gate agents for Spirit Airlines at MSY have been arrested and 2 others face charges for allegedly going through a man’s carry-on luggage and taking items while dumping the rest in the trash. Police say Spirit suspended the 4 workers after a video of the incident went public last month. 2 have been arrested and 2 are still wanted on charges of felony theft.

Lots of folks were given the option to work from home during the pandemic, and US Senator Bill Cassidy is calling out Health and Human Services leaders about whether that option is appropriate today. Twelve trainees will attend Delgado Community College in New Orleans and nine trainees will attend Baton Rouge Community College in Baton Rouge. Green says incorporating diversity and inclusion was at the forefront and candidates have already started orientation and skill-building classes.

The program is funded by a grant through the NADA foundation and the local Automobiles Dealer in Louisiana. Congressman Troy Carter also helped to secure federal funding to support this initiative. Green says they are excited about building valuable skills and creating opportunities.

The LSU Lady Tigers left today for Greenville, South Carolina, where they’ll play Utah on Friday afternoon in a Sweet 16 matchup in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. A rally was held on campus for the team before they left for the airport. Coach Kim Mulkey’s team is two wins away from LSU reaching the final four for the first time since 2008… Cut 11 (11)  “…Geaux Tigers” LSU plays Utah in the Regional semi-final on Friday at 4 PM.

All lanes on Interstate 10 leading to the Calcasieu River Bridge were shut down this morning and a shelter-in-place was issued as a result of a chlorine leak from Bio Lab in Westlake. State Police Sergeant James Anderson says I-10 near the Lake Charles bridge was closed for nearly two hours, before re-opening. Cut 10 (06) “…around this.” 

In a press conference earlier today, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell publicly addressed the recall effort to remove her from office.  More than 67,000 signatures were submitted but only 27,243 of the signatures were deemed valid; far below the 45-thousand needed. Cantrell is optimistic that the city will be able to move forward and refocus. Cut 7 (06)  “…serve everyone.”  Cantrell is the first Black female to be elected as Mayor.

The Pelicans announced today that All-Star forward Zion Williamson has been cleared to return to on-court activities, but he will not be re-evaluated again for another two weeks. That means Williamson will not return until the final week of the regular season. New Orleans is in a battle to get into the postseason tournament. They host Charlotte tomorrow and then begin a four-game road trip on Saturday against the Clippers.

Pete Maravich’s NCAA Scoring record remains intact as Detroit-Mercy’s Antoine Davis came four points short of tying the record. Davis told the Associated Press he feels cheated because the C-B-I did not include his team in its tournament, even though they had a losing record. Pistol Pete’s son, Jaeson Maravich points out that Davis had five years to break the record…

Davis missed four three-pointers in the final two minutes of his last college game.

The top ranked LSU baseball team improved to 19-and-2 with a ten to four win over Central Arkansas at Alex Box Stadium last night. Jordan Thompson’s three-run homer in the fifth inning snapped a four-four tie. ULM defeated La Tech ten to six, and the Cajuns clobbered Grambling 13 to 1. U-L Lafayette hosts Southeastern Louisiana tonight.

At LSU Spring football, One of the biggest position battles is at cornerback as the Tigers have to replace both outside corners. Former five-star recruit Denver Harris will get a chance. Harris ran into off the field trouble at Texas A-and-M last season, but Coach Brian Kelly says so far Harris is doing well…

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell publicly addresses the failed recall effort to remove her from office. The Governor’s office determined there were insufficient valid signatures submitted by the NOLATOYA group to force a recall election. The city of Abbeville moves closer to imposing a curfew in an effort to curb teen criminal activity.
