The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office confirms a shooting happened inside a courtroom at the Franklin courthouse this morning. Sheriff spokesperson David Spencer says State Police will oversee the investigation.

The average price of a gallon of regular gas in the Bayou State today is $2.84. That’s quite a drop compared to this time six months when the state recorded its highest average at $4.56 a gallon. Triple A spokesperson Nick Chabbari credits market stability for the continued drop in prices at the pump.

Saturday voters added three more constitutional amendments to Louisiana’s forty-eight-year-old constitution. Over the years, voters have been asked to consider 308 amendments. As of Saturday, they have approved 206 of them. Public Affairs Research Council’s president Stephen Procopio says they’ve struggled to find a pattern that explains voter behavior.

Republican Tom Arceneaux defeated Democrat Greg Tarver in Saturday’s Shreveport mayoral run-off election. LSU Shreveport political science professor Jeffrey Sadow says Arceneaux’s win over Tarver, a Black Democrat, is considered an upset since 57 percent of the city’s residents are Black. But Sadow says Tarver has a lot of detractors…

Arceneaux received 56 percent of the vote.

The LaSalle Parish Sheriff’s Office is offering a $5,000 reward to try to solve a murder that happened two years ago in Jena. Detective Brant King says on October 23rd, 2020, deputies found Leon Turner dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

King says they need the public’s help so they can bring some closure to the victim’s family.

LSU defensive end B-J Ojulari has announced he’s entering his name into the N-F-L draft. The Athletic projects Ojulari as a second round pick.

Mississippi State says head football coach Mike Leach is in critical condition at a hospital in Jackson. Leach was rushed to the hospital after suffering a personal health issue at his home in Starkville.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says a possible solution is an incentive program, similar to the one used after Katrina and Rita, which led to new private insurance companies in Louisiana…:

Nicholls State Biosciences Associate Professor Chris Bonvillain is conducting research on crawfish and how they survive in waters with low-oxygen levels. He says it appears they are maturing smaller in size, and he believes stress poor water quality can reduce number of eggs found in crawfish…

Thirty-year-old Davante Lewis unseated three-term Public Service Commissioner Lambert Boissiere Saturday for the Third District. Lewis is the first openly LGBTQ person to win elective office in Louisiana, but he doesn’t think it was a factor in the race.

After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the state experienced a mass exodus of property insurers, and the past two seasons have caused at least 10 companies to leave. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says back then they offered $30 million in incentives to entice companies and he’s hopeful it will work again.

Donelon says they are waiting to hear how much money the Revenue Estimating Conference says is available for incentives.

Louisiana is seeing Covid cases rise, and the worst flu season in 5 years. Michelle Southern reports now is the time to get updated on vaccines before the holidays…:

All three of the constitutional amendments on the December 10th ballot passed. They were overwhelmingly approved with more than 70 percent of the vote. Amendment One prohibits noncitizens from voting even though it’s already illegal in the state. According to the Secretary of State’s office says unofficial voter turnout 14 percent.

Tis the season to stay healthy. State health officials say this is the worst flu season in five years and COVID cases are surging again. 4500 new cases at last count. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says take precautions against both illnesses now…:

A 15-year-old was killed and two 14-year-olds were injured in a shooting at a birthday party in Bogalusa Friday night. Bogalusa Police say the shooting happened around 9:40 Friday at a house on Warren Street. They have few other details to share at this time. An investigation is underway.

 

Longtime District 3 Public Service Commission member Lambert Boissierre was defeated in Saturday’s runoff by 30-year-old Davante Lewis. Once sworn in, Lewis says he wants to work toward using more renewable energy and relying less on oil & gas. He says, currently, only 2-percent of our power comes from so-called green energy…:

Research ongoing at Nicholls State University shows that low oxygen levels in waterways makes for smaller crawfish…which makes for less satisfactory eating. Biosciences professor Chris Bonvillain says mudbugs can survive with very little O2, but the result is unsatisfactory…:

Something of a shocker in Shreveport as Republican Tom Arceneaux is elected Mayor with 56-percent of the popular vote. Shreveport is a strongly Democrat city, so Arceneaux’s win over state Senator Greg Tarver is seen as a surprise.

 

COVID cases are on the rise and flu is at its highest level in 5 years, so the Louisiana Department of Health is strongly encouraging residents to get boosters and vaccines before holiday gatherings. LDH reported nearly 4500 new Covid cases in its last count. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter…:

LSU men’s basketball will host North Carolina Central tomorrow night. On Saturday, the Tigers rallied from a 20-point deficit in the first half to beat Wake Forest 72-70 in Atlanta. Justice Hill made the winning basket with two seconds left. LSU is 8-and-1.

The 2022 Prep Classic saw two of the state’s winningest coaches win a state championship. Jim Hightower has been involved in over 500 games and he’s never seen a finish like the one he experienced on Friday as his St. Thomas More Cougars rallied from 10 points down in the final two minutes to stun Lafayette Christian 52-48. Hightower says it was a wild finish…
