Tropical Depression Number Nine in the Caribbean Sea is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm and eventually enter the Gulf of Mexico…but as of now, its projected path doesn’t threaten Louisiana. Conditions will likely move the storm more towards Florida’s lower Gulf Coast. LRN meteorologist John Wetherbee says the National Hurricane Center is predicting this system will develop into a major hurricane…:

CUT 08(08)      “…rapid intensification.”

Remember that the system’s projected course can definitely change, to come more to the west…so keep an eye on it. If it reaches named storm status, it will either be called Hermine or Ian.

State Police are holding child safety seat education and inspection events statewide tomorrow. To find one near you, check for Buckle Up Louisiana on Facebook. Trooper James Anderson says experts will inspect your child rig for safety and compliance, but if you’re not set right you won’t be in trouble..:

The reward for the killer of LSU student Allie Rice a week ago in Baton Rouge continues to grow. Between cash offered by the restaurant where Allie worked and cash from Crimestoppers and others…the reward for helping catch the killer is now up to $50-thousand. Baton Rouge Police still have no progress they can report.

One of the state’s most popular outdoor events is back.  Paused for two years during the pandemic, Louisiana’s National Hunting and Fishing Day returns tomorrow to four locations around the state. Trey Iles is with the Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Events will be held at Department of Wildlife and Fisheries locations in Haughton, Monroe, Woodworth, and Baton Rouge.

Each location’s events vary but all include outdoor exhibits, as well as hunting and fishing opportunities.

Iles says each location will have free food and live animal demonstrations. There’s also an emphasis on introducing kids to fishing.

Each location has events in the morning and wrap up midday. In Monroe and Haughton they begin at 9 am. In Baton Rouge and Woodworth they start at 8 am.

State Climatologist Barry Keim says the system is expected to strengthen over the weekend and enter the southeastern portion of the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday  after it crosses western Cuba as a hurricane.

Cut 6 (11)  “…change a bit” 

Right now, it doesn’t appear as if Louisiana will be impacted by the storm that would be named either Hermine or Ian. But Keim says three-to-five-day forecasts tend to get altered.

LRN meteorologist John Wetherbee says the National Hurricane Center is predicting this system will develop into a major hurricane…

The Tropical Depression has sustained winds at 35 mph and once it reaches 39 mph it will reach Tropical Storm status.

Louisiana Tech is preparing the college for takeoff with an aviation partnership with United Airlines. Dean of the College of Liberal Arts Karl Puljak (pull-yak) says in addition to training aviation students it also assists with career opportunities

The partnership is a first of its kind for the university and Puljak says their aviation students will benefit immensely and be able to take flight with state-of-the-art technology.

There’s a great demand for qualified pilots and Puljak says the partnership helps United fill job vacancies and it also opens the door for students who are underrepresented in the industry.

State Police are taking part in the National Seat Check Saturday safety event, for parents of kids still small enough to need a child seat or booster. Sgt. James Anderson says an event is scheduled for each of the State Police troops statewide, and people will be on hand to see if your vehicle’s current equipment is safe…:

Events will happen at well-known areas in each LSP Troop area. Anderson says it’s a good opportunity to see if your family vehicle is properly outfit for the little ones, and – if it’s not – you won’t be in any trouble…:

More trouble for New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, as one of her non-profits is under investigation by the city’s Inspector General. The group Forward Together New Orleans is having its books inspected top account for how millions in donated funds have been spent. Council members have lamented a lack of transparency from Cantrell’s venture.

And while it doesn’t appear as if Louisiana is in the cone of uncertainty… Keim does point out that three-to-five-day forecasts do tend to get altered.

Once the system reaches tropical depression status it will be known as Hermine.

A 62-year-old man was killed when the recreational shrimping boat he was on overturned on Lake Pontchartrain Thursday. Wildlife officials say Ricky Hodgson of Pearl River was not wearing a life vest.  Another man was also on the boat but was not injured. The Coast Guard located the two men near the St. Tammany-Orleans Parish Line. The cause of death remains under investigation.

LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte will not play in tomorrow night’s game against New Mexico as his girlfriend gave birth to their first child last night. Looks like Northwestern State is making a quarterback change for its Southland opener against Lamar at 3:30 in Turpin Stadium. Based on the Demons depth chart, Zachary Clement will get the start over Miles Fallin.

The Shed restaurant, where Rice worked, kickstarted the reward fund for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her death a week ago today. Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul asked the community to lift the family of Allie Rice in prayer and to stop spreading misinformation about the case. When Paul was asked about an eyewitness who claims no one would return his call and if they were taking the case seriously, Lt. Kevin Heinz stepped up to the mic.

Because Louisiana ranks 5th in the nation for the rate of women murdered by men, we asked the question what causes some men to abuse and or kill women. LSU Health New Orleans Professor of Psychiatry Dr. Rahn Bailey says some men abuse women simply because they are more likely to dominate the physical battle.

Senior study author and professor of psychology Dr. Damian Murray says when they survey more than 2600 people in numerous countries it revealed raising kids placed higher importance on family values. Over a dozen schools in Louisiana received false reports yesterday of active shooters at their school. Neville High School in Monroe, Mansfield, Rayne, Leesville, New Iberia and Westgate High were among the schools that received the automated report. Authorities are trying to determine who is responsible for the hoax.
