The Louisiana Department of Health has launched the 9-8-8 suicide and crisis Lifeline. Karen Stubbs, Assistant Secretary with the Office of Behavioral Health at LDH, says if you dial 988 in Louisiana it’s routed to a local crisis center.

There’s been an increase in COVID infections among Louisiana nursing home residents. Kevin Gallagher reports COVID deaths have also increased…:

The Louisiana Department of Health reports 54-hundred new additional COVID cases today and with eight fatalities from the virus. 657 individuals are in Louisiana hospitals with COVID, and 70-percent of those patients are not fully vaccinated.

Myles Brennan, Jaden Daniels, Garrett Nussmeier and Walker Howard will compete for starting quarterback when preseason camp begins in a couple of weeks. Kelly says the offensive line will need to come together the fastest in order for the Tigers to compete in the loaded SEC West.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey also spoke today and said there are no plans to expand beyond Texas and Oklahoma who are still on track to join the league in 2025.

He was one of the best hitters in college baseball this past season, which is why the Miami Marlins used the sixth overall pick to take LSU’s Jacob Berry. The second-team All-American hit .370 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs. Miami General Manager Kim Ng (Ang) says they hope Berry can move up quickly through the minor league system and join the big league club…

LSU second baseman Cade Doughty was selected in the second round. Today, LSU reliever Eric Reyzelman was selected in the fifth round by the New York Yankees. The right-hander from California was 1-3 with a 4.04 ERA and three saves for the Tigers.

In the fourth round, Toronto took Louisiana Tech pitcher Ryan Jennings, who was five and one with a 3.59 ERA.

State District Judge Donald Johnson says he will decide tomorrow if abortion ban trigger laws can go into effect. In the meantime, abortions to remain legal in Louisiana. Attorney General Jeff Landry, who is representing the state and says the ban should take effect, faced pro-choice protestors outside of the Baton Rouge courtroom today.

The Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice continues to be plagued with incidents. Over the weekend six inmates escaped from the Bridge City Center for Youth. All six have been recaptured but Marrero Senator Patrick Connick questions if the extra personnel to assist the OJJ is in effect.

A state district judge in Baton Rouge says he’ll decide tomorrow if abortion trigger laws can go into effect. A temporary restraining order blocking enforcement of the abortion ban was issued for a second time, last week. Judge Donald Johnson will hear from both sides on the issue. Attorney General Jeff Landry believes the case will ultimately wind up before the state supreme court.

The Louisiana Department of Health launches 988 as the phone number to dial for suicide prevention to help those in crisis. Don Molino has more.

Six inmates at the Bridge City Center for Youth in Jefferson Parish escaped over the weekend. All six are back in custody but it’s among the more than 25 escapes from juvenile facilities in Louisiana this year alone. Marrero Senator Patrick Connick says the Bridge City Center is designed as a dormitory to house teens facing truancy charges.

For a second straight month, COVID-19 infections and deaths are increasing among Louisianans living in nursing homes. Two deaths were reported for the month of May 2022, but for that number jumped to seven for June. Andrew Muhl is Policy Director for AARP Louisiana. He says the elderly are more at risk from COVID than anyone…:

Nursing home resident COVIDs cases are up 27-percent nationwide. Cases among nursing home staffs are up 42-percent. Currently in Louisiana, just over 650 seniors in nursing homes are suffering COVID symptoms. Muhl says the best way to mitigate COVID symptoms is to get the shots…:

Muhl says AARP is imploring nursing home employees and residents to get COVID shots and any needed boosters. Since the pandemic began, nearly 33-hundred Louisiana nursing home residents have died from COVID-19.

The most recent was at the Bridge City Center for Youth in Jefferson Parish, where six teens escaped early Sunday morning. All six have been recaptured but Marrero Senator Patrick Connick questions if the extra personnel to assist OJJ is in effect.

One of the escapees stole two vehicles and injured an individual during the exchange.

Connick says while the inmates are juveniles he believes those charged with violent crimes belong in better equipped facility. Connick says the Bridge City Center is designed as a dormitory to house teens facing truancy charges.

After multiple escapes from youth facilities in Louisiana, the OJJ was given extra personnel, but Connick says he’s reached out to both the governor and OJJ asking why juveniles continue to escape.

Stubbs says if you dial 988 in Louisiana it’s routed to a local crisis center. She says their office wanted to be sure it’s answered quickly and by trained individuals.

There are two 988 call centers in Louisiana, one in northern part of the state and the other covering southern Louisiana. Stubbs says if one is receiving an influx of calls, the other center acts as a backup.

According to the CDC, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death and in 2020 more than 600 Louisianans took their own life. Stubbs says 988 hopes to change that and even if someone isn’t actively suicidal, they are there to help.

Judge Donald Johnson wants to see additional documents from the two sides. Pro-choice lawyers say the laws are too vague, while Attorney General Jeff Landry believes the state’s trigger laws should go into effect. Landry says he’s certain that – no matter what Judge Johnson decides – there will be further challenges and the case will ultimately be decided by the state Supreme Court…:
