The U-S Justice Department has announced it will look into the patterns and practices of the Louisiana State Police as the law enforcement agency has been the subject of criticism for recent excessive force arrests, including one that ended in the death of Black motorist Ronald Greene in 2019. A 5th U-S Circuit Court of appeals panel has stayed an order made by a Baton Rouge federal judge that called for state lawmakers to redraw a Congressional district map. It’s the ruling Republican lawmakers were expecting and there’s a greater chance that a special session called by the governor to redraw the map will not happen next week.

Wide receiver Devery Henderson and running back-slash-special teams standout Fred McAfee will be the two newest members of the Saints Hall of Fame. The two will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame in October.

The super regionals get underway today starting with Texas taking on East Carolina at 11 AM. Also, Oklahoma is at Virginia Tech, Notre Dame takes on Tennessee and tonight Texas A-and-M hosts Louisville.

It was a return to form in Lafayette as the Ragin’ Cajuns made it back to the NCAA baseball tournament for the first time since 2016 this season. UL-Lafayette was a regular participant for two decades before this extended absence. Coach Matt Deggs says the foundation has been set to bring back the glory days.

The state’s largest business lobby says lawmakers passed some very good bills for the state’s business environment. Louisiana Association of Business & Industry (LABI) CEO Stephen Waguespack says they’re happy with two bills passed to establish Education Savings Accounts for students will special needs and kids who’re struggling with reading skills. Waguespack says our state ranks 48th in education and less than half of our students can read at grade level, and a solution is the ESA’s…:

Waguespack says he hopes the Governor will sign those bills.

Other bills passed will promote better literacy outcomes for K-12 students. Waguespack is also happy the legislature made good use of billions in federal dollars to address road and bridge needs. He says there is always a temptation for lawmakers to use big windfalls of one-time money on recurring expenditures…:

LABI applauds investments in workforce development, bills to create more transparency and modernization of the state’s courts and judicial system. Waguespack says LABI regrets that one bill they deemed critical FAILED passage…:

More details are now available regarding the triple homicide in Bastrop that took the lives of three teens on Wednesday night. After receiving multiple 9-1-1 calls about shots fired, Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s deputies mobilized. Chief Deputy Jeremy Mardis says a retired reserve deputy was the first to reach the scene.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third died from his injuries at Morehouse General Hospital. Authorities were able to locate a fourth victim who escaped unharmed. Mardis says that the young man laid out the horrible sequence of events for law enforcement…

Based on witness statements and surveillance video from the area, sheriffs identified 18-year-old Errigan Rainwater and Jaquarius Givens as suspects. Under questioning, both admitted to firing the fatal shots into the victims. A third suspect, 38-year-old John Rabun, was also arrested. Mardis says the Bastrop community has been rocked by the tragedy.

Rainwater and Givens have been charged with three counts of First Degree Murder and Attempted First Degree Murder. Rabun was charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly removing shell casings from the crime scene.

Governor John Bel Edwards issued a statement in response to the federal civil investigation of the Louisiana State Police. Edwards says he along with LSP Superintendent Col Lamar Davis will cooperate fully with the investigation. Kristen Clarke, US Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division says they are grateful for their cooperation.

US Attorney General Ronald Gathe for the Middle District of Louisiana says the federal civil investigation is imperative to restore public confidence in law enforcement.

Opelousas native and LSU standout Devery Henderson was announced as one of three members of the 2022 class to be inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame. Henderson played eight seasons in New Orleans, leading the NFL in yards per reception in 2006 and 2008. His best season came as a member of the 2009 Super Bowl champions when he caught 50 passes for 804 yards.

Joining Henderson is former special teams ace “Fast Freddie” McAfee. Drafted in 1991, McAfee spent 10 of his 16 NFL seasons wearing the Black and Gold, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2002. Today, McAfee serves as the team’s VP of Player Engagement.

Longtime assistant trainer Kevin Mangum will be inducted as well. He received the Joe Gemelli Award for his outstanding contributions to the team. The induction ceremony will take place this October.

The Justice Department formally announces its civil investigation of the Louisiana State Police. Kristen Clarke, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division says they will focus on two main issues.

The civil investigation is separate from the criminal investigation surrounding the death of Black motorist Ronald Greene.

Higher education will see a record increase in funding for the fiscal year that begins July 1st. The money contained in the budget for universities and colleges contains a pay raise for faculty and there are also five million dollars for title nine and power-based violence training programs. Higher Education Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed.

Fred McAfee and Devery Henderson were announced as the latest inductees into the New Orleans Saints Hall of fame this afternoon. McAfee spent 10 of his 16 NFL seasons with the Saints and was a special teams star, earning a selection to the 2002 Pro Bowl…

Henderson, an Opelousas native, and LSU star spent 8 seasons with the Saints, helping them win the Super Bowl in 2009.

LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte is still on the way back from offseason ankle surgery, though he’s excited about the upcoming season. He says he’s not sure who’ll be throwing him the ball, but was very impressed by the development of Garrett Nussmeier, who drew plenty of praise this spring.

LSU’s baseball season came to a disappointing end on Monday. However, Tigers legend Ben McDonald says that Coach Jay Johnson changed the culture this year, and the future for the Tigers looks very, very bright.

The U.S. Justice Department formally announces its investigation of the Louisiana State Police over numerous roadside beatings in recent years – mostly of Black men. Ronald Greene died during such an encounter with troopers. DOJ Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke says they are asking for the public to share what they know about these type incidents…:

She says they have also received full cooperation from the LSP and Governor John Bel Edwards.

The legislative session that ended Monday was good to higher education. State Higher Ed Commissioner Kim Hunter Reed says a 12-percent funding increase will help to do a lot. She says there’s also million for a financial aid program for adult learners…:

That program is named for former Governor Mike Foster.

 

A recent AAA survey done in Florida shows a large number of respondents said the cost of gas would deter them from evacuating for a hurricane. Here in Louisiana, gas is at $4.50 a gallon and climbing. Louisiana AAA’s Don Redman says evacuating will cost an average family of four about $1000, and you need to do whatever is necessary to be prepared for that…:

Question: if a hurricane is approaching and you’re advised to evacuate…will you let the high cost of gasoline deter you? A large number of respondents to a AAA poll in Florida said “yes”, they’d consider hunkering at home to save the cash. Here in Louisiana GOHSEP spokesman Mike Steele says the state is taking those concerns into consideration as it puts its systems for this hurricane season into place…:

The statewide average for regular gas hit $4.50 this morning. As you know the price often spikes even higher when a storm approaches.

Baton Rouge Police arrest a local man they say broke into a business and attempted to rape the two guard dogs there. Security video captured disturbing images of 28-year-old Rage Hewitt’s assault on the animals. He was arrested Wednesday for aggravated cruelty to animals, attempted sexual abuse of an animal and unauthorized entry.

 

The legislative session that ended Monday produced a banner year for higher education funding. Jeff Palermo has the story…:

Troubling news out of Florida, as a recent survey of residents there indicates a good many would NOT evacuate for a hurricane, because of skyrocketing fuel costs. Mike Steele, with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, says gasoline assistance for emergencies IS available here, but you’ll need to register to get that help sooner rather than later…:
