Kelsie Tillage, a junior at Southern Lab High School has received a Gold Medal Congressional Award. It’s the highest honor a youth civilian can achieve. Tillage is a member of her school’s student government association, volleyball team, was named student of the year in her district, and completed hundreds of hours of community service, mostly focused on child literacy…

A bipartisan legislative committee investigating the deadly 2019 arrest of Ronald Greene says it plans to move to hold the former head of state police in contempt for refusing to turn over documents on the matter. The dispute is over a journey entry mentioning Governor John Bel Edwards. Kevin Reeves has been accused of covering up the initial investigation into Greene’s death. Reeves’ lawyer says his client is cooperating.

The parents of a woman who died in her home after spending years rotting away on a couch have been indicted by a grand jury on second degree murder charges. Sheila and Clay Fletcher are accused of giving no care to their 36-year-old daughter and the East Feliciana Parish Coroner’s Office believes Lacey Fletcher could have been on the couch not moving in her own waste for almost 12 years. A trial date has not been set.

Police are asking for the public’s help identifying an individual connected to a stabbing in a concession stand on LSU’s campus Saturday before the Garth Brooks concert. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact authorities. The victim was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

According to Money Geek, Louisiana ranks second in the nation among states with the most distracted driving fatalities. Head of Data Analytics Doug Milens says they created a rate of distracted driving deaths based on miles driven in each state…

The definition of distracted driving goes beyond looking at your phone, he says it includes things like eating or even having to correct a child’s behavior while driving.

Milens says they analyzed 2020 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and 2,880 people died in the U.S. in distracted-related crashes, despite the fact that Americans drove 344-thousand fewer miles.

Distracted driving rates increased by 12-percent in the US in 2020.

The study found Louisiana and North Carolina had the most significant increase in distracted driving fatalities from 2019 to 2020. Milens says that coupled with high auto-insurance only adds insult to injury in the Bayou State.

While researching her legislation, bill author New Orleans Representative Aimee Freeman says she learned that many students experience “Period Poverty.”

Anaya Bhatia, Caddo Parish Magnet High School student and co-president of GirlUP an organization supporting the needs of female students, told lawmakers the legislation would help female students who have little access to menstrual products.

Bill co-author New Orleans Representative Jason Hughes says the cost for local school districts would average $500 for the first year to install dispensers. Hughes says if the toiletry needs of males are supplied in school restrooms, then they should also support the needs of females.

Risk Rating 2.0 sets flood insurance rates based upon a structure’s value and the flood history of its location, rather than the old system which used flood zone maps. Graves says it was supposed to lower rates for property owners…:

Graves says he and colleagues in flood and hurricane-prone areas continue working on possible solutions to the high cost of flood insurance. He says one proposed bill has some bipartisan support…:

Southern University Laboratory School junior Kelsie Tillage was recently named a recipient of the Gold Congressional Award, the highest honor that Congress can bestow upon any civilian youth between the ages of 14 and 24 for initiative, service, and achievement.

Since the inception of the award, there have been 5,000 gold medalists, and of those only 84 are from Louisiana, placing Tillage in a very exclusive company. Standing out is nothing new for her, however, as she’s a member of her school’s student government association, volleyball team, was named student of the year in her district, and completed hundreds of hours of community service, mostly focused on child literacy.

Kelsie, who’s also earned the Duke Tip Scholar award and participated in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, says she didn’t set out to earn any awards and that serving others is something she’s done throughout her life.

Tillage maintains a 4.29-grade point average at Southern Lab and is dually enrolled in Southern University honors and AP courses. As far as career plans, Tillage says she’s still discovering her interests for now.

Following their series win over Georgia, LSU baseball seems to have found its bearings. The Tigers have won six of eight and are climbing the power rankings. Cade Doughty capped the series with the Dawgs by blasting a walk-off home run in Sunday’s rubber match. He says there’s no time to look back with plenty of tough competition ahead.

House Transportation approves a bill that levies a road usage fee on owners of electric and hybrid vehicles with the money going towards highway and bridge maintenance. State Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says Louisiana relies on its gasoline tax to pay for road work and E-V and hybrid vehicle owners are not paying their fair share…

The measure passed out of a committee on a nine-three vote but still needs full House and Senate approval. Haughton Representative Dodie Horton says hybrids and E-Vs are using the same roads as other vehicles, but not paying as much in gas taxes…

The legislation calls for electric vehicle owners to pay an additional $110 a year, while hybrid owners would pay a 60-dollar fee annually.

The New Orleans Saints finished up their weekend at the NFL Draft. Head coach Dennis Allen says he’s pleased with the players they’ve selected, but the search for talent continues.

According to reports New Orleans native, LSU standout, and Super Bowl champion safety, Tyrann Mathieu will be signing a three-year, $33 million contract, with $18 million fully guaranteed with the Saints. Mathieu, entering his 10th season, has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons, and was first-team All-Pro in 2019 and 2020. An official announcement is expected on Tuesday. No word yet on whether Mathieu, who has worn number 32 throughout his pro career, will try to get number seven from tight end Taysom Hill.

The Saints added 17 undrafted free agents to the roster as well, including Nicholls State’s all-time leader in catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns, Dai’Jean Dixon.

LSU baseball’s series win over Georgia has lifted the Tigers to 16th in the RPI rankings. At 12-9, LSU is tied for second in the SEC West. The Tigers host Nicholls State on Tuesday before traveling to Tuscaloosa to take on Bama this weekend.

Former LSU women’s basketball guard Khayla Pointer has been waived by the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces. Pointer, the first pick of the second round in this year’s draft, was a long shot to make the Aces, who have a lot of depth at the guard position. In one preseason game, she scored four points, with one assist, one steal, and three turnovers in 11 minutes of action.

McNeese State alumnus and Basketball Hall of Famer Joe Dumars has been named the NBA’s Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations. In his position, Dumars will oversee development of rules, conduct and discipline policies, as well as engage with stakeholders at every level. Dumars spent the last three seasons as Chief Strategy Officer for the Sacramento Kings following a 15-year tenure with the Detroit Pistons. The Shreveport native was also the Southland Conference Player of the Decade in the 1980s after a stellar on-court career for the Cowboys.

Road and bridge upkeep in the state is paid for by a gasoline tax, so do drivers of electric vehicles pay their fair share? A bill to include EVs and hybrid cars into the pool paying for highways has cleared a House committee. It would impose a road use tax on EVs of $110 a year and $60 yearly for hybrid cars, trucks & SUVs. Baton Rouge Representative Barbara Frieberg says collecting that would be done via state income tax filing…:

Police in Lafayette identify the man they say opened fire on late night revelers in the city’s downtown area very early Sunday morning; injuring 11 people. LPD says 40-year-old Carl Thompson, of New Iberia, faces numerous attempted murder charges. Three LFP officers fired on Thompson; bringing him down. He’s in critical condition at a local hospital. His victims are expected to recover.

 

A grand jury in East Feliciana Parish indicts the parents of a woman who died in their home to stand trial for murder. The parents are now facing a charge of second-degree murder. A trial date has not been set. Coroner Dr. Ewell Bickham says 36-year-old Lacey Fletcher died at her parents’ home on January 3rd. She was surrounded in her own feces and urine when he found her. He calls it the worst case of neglect he’s ever seen.
