New Orleans Police seek the person or persons responsible for shooting & killing a 7-year-old girl Sunday night in Algiers. Little Dillan Burton was riding in a car with her mom when a bullet penetrated the vehicle; striking her in the back. NOPD asks anyone with information to come forward.

The CDC revises isolation guidelines for those who test positive for COVID from 10 days to five days, that’s if they don’t have symptoms and wear a mask for at least five more days. LSU Health New Orleans infectious disease specialist Dr. Fred Lopez says when the CDC looked at the data the virus appears to be most contagious in the two days before and three days after symptoms develop…:

Today the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lowered the COVID quarantine recommendation from 10 days to just 5 days. Experts are now saying blanket mask orders and reacting to infections numbers are using old metrics, and what’s more relevant now are numbers of deaths and hospitalizations.

State Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says the customers of two property insurers who were placed into receivership last month have found new coverage. Those companies are Access Home Insurance and State National Fire Insurance. Donelon says a new company (whose name has not yet been publicly disclosed) will take on most of those 30-thousand policies, pending approval today in a Baton Rouge courtroom. Donelon says they hope to have the deal sealed by Friday…:

Police in New Orleans seek the person who shot & killed a 7-year-old girl Sunday, while she was riding in a car with her mom. They’re looking for a newer model Chevy pickup; white and silver and will gladly accept tips.

Your plans for New Year’s Eve may be under threat of lousy weather again this year. Forecasters say they expect thundershowers to cross the Gulf South Friday and into Saturday; bringing in cooler temperatures by late Sunday night and Monday morning.

Amid a surge of COVID Omicron cases the city of Shreveport reinstates its indoor mask mandate for city buildings and agencies. Mayor Adrian Perkins himself has tested positive for COVID. He says the order is in hopes of mitigating further spread, and more measures could be coming…:

State Health Department officials report just over 12-thousand new cases of COVID over the holiday weekend … and that does not include those who did at-home tests. Tulane University epidemiologist Dr. Susan Hassig says we’re seeing a surge that started with the Thanksgiving weekend…:

Hunters are happy to know that, so far, no cases of Chronic Wasting Disease have presented in the Louisiana deer herd. State Wildlife & Fisheries veterinarian Dr. Jim Lacour says nearly 300 deer – submitted by hunters – have been tested, and all are negative…:

Hospitalizations doubled in just a week; from a little over 200, to nearly 450. Tulane University epidemiologist Dr. Susan Hassig says Omicron does have a different clinical presentation compared to the original virus and Delta variant…:

Homeowners who were covered by two failed companies – Access Home Insurance and State National Fire Insurance – have a safety net thanks to the state Department of Insurance. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says he’s worked a deal for a new company to take on about 30-thousand properties covered by the two; meaning those property owners will NOT have to resort to the state-owned insurer of last resort, Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance. That company’s rates are, by law, ten percent higher than the private market…:

The Pelicans will play their final game of 2021 tonight when they host Cleveland. New Orleans will likely play this game without its leading scorer as Brandon Ingram is listed as doubtful with Achilles soreness. Guard Josh Hart is questionable with an ankle sprain and Nickeil Alexander-Walker is out as a result of COVID protocols.

The 19th ranked LSU women’s basketball team closed out nonconference play with an 83-47 win over Samford last night. Jailin Cherry had 22 points. The Lady Tigers begin SEC play on Thursday at 13th ranked Georgia.

The men’s basketball team is ranked 16th in both polls and will open SEC play tomorrow on the road against Auburn. Auburn is ranked 11th.

Nicholls guard Ty Gordon has been named Southland Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for a third consecutive week after scoring 26 points in a loss to Oregon State. The Colonels are at third ranked Purdue tomorrow. Northwestern State visits top ranked Baylor tonight.

The state reported an alarming number of 12,164 new COVID cases over the holiday weekend. And with the availability of in-home COVID tests, Tulane Epidemiologist Dr. Susan Hassig says the number is even more concerning because it does not include positive at-home results.

If you have tested positive at home, in addition to quarantining, Hassig encourages you to call the state’s contact tracing line, so we have a better idea of community spread and where we are seeing a spike in cases.

Hassig says it’s a testament to just how transmissible the Omicron variant is. In just a week COVID hospitalizations have doubled to 449 patients in Louisiana.  She says there’s typically a two-week delay when cases begin to rise to see an impact in hospitals and the uptick now is here cases were on the rise after Thanksgiving.

Hassig highly encourages you to use face masks in public settings, wash your hands frequently, and socially distance yourself. She says we are starting to see an uptick in flu and strep cases and COVID mitigation will help reduce exposure to those as well.

Perkins conducted a phone interview from his home with LRN Monday and says he’s quarantining while relatives are in town visiting for Christmas.

Positive news from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, after four weeks of receiving 270 samples from deer across the state, they haven’t found any incidents of chronic wasting disease. LDWF began testing for CWD earlier this month when cases were reported across the state line in Union County, Arkansas. State Veterinarian Jim LaCour…

LDWF received 96 samples from Union Parish and 16 from Morehouse Parish. Testing in those parishes was prioritized due to the proximity to the cases in Arkansas. LaCour says the samples were sent to the diagnostic testing lab at LSU.

If you have participated in the sampling, LaCour says you can get the results of their sample on their website. The testing is free.

COVID hospitalizations have doubled in just one week in Louisiana. The 449 patients with COVID an increase of 143 from the previous report and 80-percent of those COVID patients in Louisiana hospitals are unvaccinated.

The state says they’ve received just over 12-thousand new cases which include those conducted over the holiday weekend. But the number does not include positive results from home tests.

If you’re looking for a way to dispose of your live Christmas tree and help the environment. Rob Moreau, manager of Southeastern’s Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station says you can drop your tree at collection sites in Tangipahoa Parish and even a well-known seafood restaurant.

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Secretary Shawn Wilson says this time next month construction will be ramping up to add eight miles of elevated highway along Highway 1 in Lafourche Parish. The state says they’ve received just over 12-thousand new cases over the holiday weekend and that does not include positive results from home-tests. Hospitalizations are up to 449 an increase of 143 from the previous report and 80-percent of COVID patients are unvaccinated.
