The coronavirus treatment given to President Trump when he was admitted to Walter Reed Hospital is now available in Louisiana. Governor John Bel Edwards says the monoclonal antibody fusion treatment can help high-risk patients from becoming seriously ill. Those considered high risk for COVID are 65 and older with obesity, diabetes, and kidney disease, and those 55 and older with heart disease or hypertension are possible candidates for the new treatment.

For that to happen, the Saints will need to beat Carolina on Sunday in the regular season finale, the Bears would need to defeat the Packers and Seattle would have to knock off the 49ers, which would set up a three-way tie for first place in the NFC. The Saints would win the tie breaker under that scenario. If Green Bay defeats Chicago then the Saints will miss out on the top seed.

The New Orleans Pelicans won their home opener as they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 98-95 last night. Brandon Ingram continued his strong start as he scored 28 points.

The Ragin Cajuns wrapped up a second straight double digit win season on Saturday as U-L Lafayette held off Texas San Antonio 31-24 in the SERVPro First Responder Bowl in Dallas. Elijah Mitchell rushed for 127 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown.

At the Prep Football Classic in Natchitoches, Catholic High of Baton Rouge won its third state championship in six years as the Bears defeated Byrd 35-12. Landon O’ Connor rushed for two touchdowns, while freshman QB Daniel Beale tossed two touchdown passes.

Many won its first state title since 2014 with a 16-13 win over Kinder. Tylen Singleton’s 23 yard interception return for a touchdown in the 4th quarter was the winning score.

Today at 11 AM it’s the Class 1A state championship game between Grand Lake and Oak Grove. Grand Lake is in Cameron Parish and trying to win the school’s first title despite two devastating hurricanes. Grand Lake Coach Jeff Wainwright says the team has been an inspiration and escape for Cameron Parish residents…

A new study indicates that pregnancy and childbirth complications have risen 32% as more millennial females have pre-existing conditions increasing the risks. Senior Medical Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield Louisiana Dr. Dee Barfield says claims data from 2014 to 2018 shows the increase in complications.

Barfield stresses the importance of prenatal visits; she says their study is from women who have access to care due to coverage and they are not seeking medical care early enough in their pregnancy.

The study also indicates the average age to have a child increased to 31.  Barfield says the older you are the more likely you are to already have a chronic condition before pregnancy.

Barfield says they worry that more pregnant women have avoided medical care and prenatal visits due to the pandemic and we’ll see more pregnancy and childbirth complications in the near future.

Edwards says candidates for this type of treatment must begin treatment as soon as they are diagnosed and be showing symptoms for no more than 10 days. Because this is an outpatient procedure, Edwards says monoclonal antibody fusion is beneficial in two ways.

Edwards says while he is not a physician, he’s heard promising results about treatment from the White House Task Force and from CEOs of local hospitals.

Those considered high risk for COVID are 65 and older with obesity, diabetes, and kidney disease, and those 55 and older with heart disease or hypertension are possible candidates for the new treatment.

The Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office says two people died in a Christmas Day house fire. The blaze occurred yesterday afternoon at a mobile home off of state Highway 191 south of Cypress Road. The identities of the two people killed have not been released and the state fire marshal’s office is investigating a cause.

The Louisiana Legislature had its hands full in 2020 and 2021 also looks busy. Redistricting will be a priority once all of the census data comes in. Crowley Republican John Stefanski has been named chairman of the House Governmental Affairs Committee, which oversees the drawing of political lines. But Stefanski says it’s also likely the state will face a COVID-induced budget deficit when they return in April for the regular session…

Kamara rushed for 155 yards on 22 carries, while Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 311 yards as he becomes the first NFL quarterback to pass for 80-thousand career yards.

And the Saints won their fourth straight NFC South title. But New Orleans has reportedly lost linebacker Kwon Alexander for the season with a torn A-C-L. The regular season concludes next Sunday at Carolina.

The 16th ranked Ragin Cajuns go after their tenth win of the season Saturday when they take on Texas-San Antonio in the Servpro First Responder Bowl in Dallas. U-L Lafayette enters the game as co-champs of the Sun Belt. They were disappointed the conference title game was canceled because of COVID issues with Coastal Carolina, but Coach Billy Napier says his team is now focused on winning this bowl game…

In basketball…the Pelicans lost their Christmas Day matchup with Miami falling to the Heat 111-98. Miami built a 20-point lead in the second quarter and New Orleans never could catch up despite 32 points from Zion Williamson.

LSU hosts Nicholls today at 1:00. This game was arranged on Thursday after Texas Southern told the Tigers they couldn’t play because of COVID issues.
