Hurricane Laura is responsible for six deaths in Louisiana. Four of the victims died when a tree came crashing into their home. A 24-year-Calcasieu Parish man also died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator inside his home. Another death in Calcasieu has been classified as a drowning. The victim was on a sinking ship.

The videos and pictures of damage from Hurricane Laura in southwest Louisiana are heartbreaking and the recovery will be lengthy. Many people are returning to Calcasieu Parish to find their homes no longer habitable. Those needing shelter are encouraged to text LA Shelter to 898-211. Governor Edwards says Disaster food stamp assistance is not yet available but encourages residents in impacted areas to pre-register.

State Police is investigating the death of an individual who was in the custody of the Monroe Police Department. Authorities say the individual caused a serious two-vehicle crash on Wednesday night and attempted to leave the scene after officers arrived. Monroe Police subdued the individual and the person was taken to a hospital and later passed away. No other details have been provided.

Louisiana is recovering from the effects of Hurricane Laura, having to dislodge a riverboat casino from the I-10 Bridge in Lake Charles and house nearly 2,000 evacuees in hotels. Matt Doyle has the story.

Hurricane Laura has passed and the long recovery process begins. The I-10 Bridge in Lake Charles is closed after the Isle of Capri riverboat casino barge got loose in the lake and lodged itself under the bridge. The casino has been pulled away, but state Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says they are looking to see if the collision did any structural damage.

Not too far away from the bridge, a fire at the Biolab chemical plant in Westlake continues to smolder. A precautionary shelter in place continues within one mile of the plant.

This type of movement from professional athletes started in the NBA, who had a second straight night of no games in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake Junior, a black man shot seven times in the back in Wisconsin.

The Saints practiced yesterday but had a sticker with Jacob Blake’s name on the front of their helmets. Coach Sean Payton says they didn’t talk about canceling practice, but they wanted to do something…

The NBA playoffs are expected to resume soon.

ULM’s season opener against Troy on September fifth has been postponed to December fifth. Last Thursday, the Warhawks suspended football-related activities after COVID-19 testing confirmed nine COVID-19 positive cases. Football activities were canceled yesterday because of Hurricane Laura. Athletics Director Scott McDonald says they came to the realization that their student-athletes would not have sufficient time to prepare for a game on September fifth. The Warhawks new season opener is September 12th versus Army.

Hurricane Laura did damage to athletic facilities at McNeese State. The school’s new basketball sustained damage, a new video board at Cowboy Stadium was also damaged, along with the press box at the football stadium.

The SEC announced that women’s soccer and volleyball will have a shortened fall season where they will play games and matches against other conference opponents. Those sports will also compete in the spring as well as the NCAA has decided to move fall championships to the spring.

Now that Hurricane Laura has passed the state is busy surveying damage and sheltering those who lost their homes.

The I-10 Bridge in Lake Charles is currently being inspected after the Isle of Capri riverboat casino barge got loose in the lake and lodged itself under the bridge. DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson says they’re working to figure out if the collision did any structural damage.

The bridge was already declared structurally deficient by the US Department of Transportation, a designation Louisiana DOTD disputed.

Governor Edwards says 2,100 people are currently being sheltered by the state, 1,900 of them in hotels and motels. Edwards says it crucial that anyone needing housing be kept out of congregate settings…

Carnline says Gas pumps are down due to a lack of power and wifi. All traffic lights were knocked out, and over 40,000 lost power. Normally they’d be rushing deputies to south Louisiana, but…

In some good news, there were no severe injuries reported in the parish.

In Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker says they’ve suffered a worse blow than they did during last year’s tornado.

In Ruston, winds over 70 miles per hour were clocked.

Walker says 95 percent of the city lost power, compared to just 70 percent of the city during the tornado.

The Lake Charles region may have been spared the predicted catastrophic storm surge but the winds from Hurricane Laura have left a mark, and now residents in nearby Westlake, Moss Bluff, and Sulphur in Calcasieu Parish are being instructed to stay inside due to a chemical fire at the BioLab plant. State Police Trooper Derek Senegal says hazmat teams are on scene…

The plume is ignited chlorine.

Elsewhere in the area the Isle of Capri riverboat barge had to be dislodged from under the I-10 Bridge, causing a shutdown of the bridge for inspection.

Laura made landfall with 150 mile per hour winds, and winds of at least 100 miles per hour were reported in Lake Charles. Calcasieu Police Jury President Tony Guillory…

Four people are so far confirmed to have died from incidents related to the hurricane. 14-year-old girl in Leesville died when the fierce winds knocked a tree down on her home. Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft says with so many trees down it wasn’t easy to get to the scene…

Other fatalities were reported in Jackson and Acadia Parishes.

Governor Edwards says the state is lucky to have avoided the worst-case scenarios projected for Hurricane Laura but still a record number of power crews and search and rescue first responders are scouring areas in the path of the storm. He asks you not to get in their way.

The Saints practiced indoors today as Hurricane Laura passed by the team’s training facility to the west. The Saints had stickers with Jacob Blake’s name on it and placed the stickers on their helmets. Coach Sean Payton says the team wanted to do something after several NBA teams decided not to play their playoff games last night in response to the police shooting in Wisconsin that has left Blake paralyzed…

It looks like the NBA playoffs will continue this weekend. NBA players gathered inside the bubble last night and discussed ending the season, but ESPN reports the players are looking at resuming the playoffs.

ULM’s season opener against Troy on September fifth has been rescheduled for December fifth. It was last Friday when the Warhawks paused football-related activities after a round of COVID-19 tests produced new positives. The team was set to initiate return-to-play protocols yesterday, but the campus has been closed because of Hurricane Katrina. ULM Athletics Director Scott McDonald says they came to the realization that their student-athletes would not have sufficient time to prepare for a game on September fifth.

Despite a report that LSU has only four offensive linemen available, because the rest either tested positive for COVID-19 or quarantine, the Tigers held a practice at their indoor facility. The school has not confirmed or denied that report.

Governor Edwards has extended Phase 2 coronavirus restrictions for two more weeks until September 11th. So what does this mean for high school football who plans to begin its season October 8th? Many coaches agree the season could still start on that date if the state can move into Phase 3 after this two-week extension concludes.

Hurricane Laura is now a tropical storm but before she made landfall, she registered 150 mile per hour winds and was a near category five hurricane. Governor John Bel Edwards says so far four lives have been lost and at least 600,000 Louisianans are without power and that number is expected to climb.

Congressman Ralph Abraham is surveying areas of the state impacted by Hurricane Laura. Abraham says he started at daybreak in his vehicle in Lake Charles then drove north to Deridder and on to Alexandria.

Just weeks after parish officials voted to keep a Confederate monument outside the Calcasieu Parish courthouse in Lake Charles it was toppled during last night’s hurricane. The statue, dubbed “The South’s Defenders” monument was at the center of debate recently as confederate monuments were being removed across the nation during George Floyd protests.
