The center of Tropical Storm Marco is about 50 miles southeast of the mouth of the Missisippi River, but it has weakened from yesterday when it was a hurricane. State Climatologist Barry Keim says the bigger concern is Tropical Storm Laura near Cuba and he says the storm will strengthen as it heads to the Gulf of Mexico…

The video appears to show Lafayette police shouting for Pellerin to stop walking before they tazed him to no effect. As he began to enter a convenience store, Lafayette Police officers fired their guns. Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory released a statement that supports how the officers handled the situation. State Police continues to investigate.

Conference USA has decided to move fall team sports, except for football, to the spring of 2021. The La Tech programs affected are women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Louisiana is preparing for two tropical cyclones with the first landfall expected late tonight from Tropical Storm Marco. State Climatologist Barry Keim says Marco was downgraded to a tropical storm last night, but it will still bring storm surge and possible severe weather to southeast Louisiana.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Laura is gaining strength near Cuba and will quickly become a hurricane once it emerges in the Gulf of Mexico tomorrow. It’s expected to be at least a Category two hurricane, when it makes landfall near Lake Charles late Wednesday night.

There were multiple large protests in Lafayette over the weekend against the Friday night police killing of 31-year-old Trayford Pellerin.

A video shows officers following and shooting Pellerin, who was walking with a knife. NAACP Lafayette President Mardja Broussard says there had to be a better way for police to handle this…

The video appears to show Lafayette police shouting for Pellerin to stop before they begun tazing him to no effect. As he began entering a convenience store at least ten shots were fired, seemingly into Pellerin’s back.

Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory has released a statement in support of the officer’s actions. Broussard calls Guillory a racist mayor.

The incident is now being investigated by State Police.

Broussard notes this is the third Lafayette Police officer-involved shooting in the last five months.

State Police say the officers were responding to reports of a disturbance at a nearby convenience store when they first approached Pellerin and attempted to taze him. They say he then fled half a mile to the next store before the final, fatal confrontation.

Governor Edwards warns Louisiana is set to take a one-two punch from Tropical Storm Marco and Hurricane Laura.

Edwards says the timing of these two storms will create a uniquely difficult search and rescue and power restoration scenario.

Edwards says if your power goes out work to begin restoring it may not be able to begin until later this week.

Edwards thanked President Trump for signing off on his request for a federal emergency declaration.

Edwards cautioned that the Hurricane Center now says Laura could be a category three hurricane when it makes landfall Wednesday afternoon, and the cone of uncertainty covers all of southwest and central Louisiana.

There are two tropical storms that could impact Louisiana next week. Tropical Storm Laura is the biggest threat. Laura is currently producing heavy rains over portions of Puerto Rico. The storm is heading west at 18 miles per hour and it will move over Haiti, Dominican Republic and Cuba, before moving into the Gulf of Mexico and developing into a Category one hurricane. A strong Category one storm could make landfall along Louisiana’s coast Wednesday night.

There’s also Tropical storm Marco which is expected to become a hurricane later today over the northwest Caribbean Sea. Tim Destri, with the National Weather Service in Slidell, says Marco will head towards Louisiana, before turning west Monday and weakening to a tropical storm….

State Police announce a black man shot by police in Lafayette last night has died from his injuries. State Police Trooper Derek Senegal says Lafayette police officers responded to a disturbance involving a person armed with a knife at a gas station and the subject then walked to another gas station with officers right behind him…

The man shot has been identified as 31-year-old Trayford Pellerin and he died at a local hospital. Senegal says officers deployed Tasers as they pursued Pellerin, but they were ineffective. A bystander caught the episode on video, which has since gone viral, and you can hear officers fire multiple shots.

ULM football is pausing its preseason camp, because COVID testing produced nine positive cases. The school is hoping they can resume practice early next week. The Warhawks first game is September fifth at Troy.

A Baton Rouge man who killed a woman in a high-speed wreck last year after he says God told him to kill himself is found not guilty by reason of insanity. 19-year-old Jack Jordan’s attorney, James Manasseh, says Jordan had no criminal or mental health history before he was hit with paranoid schizophrenia…

Stephanie Payne was stopped at a Baton Rouge intersection in July of 2019 when Jordan slammed his vehicle into hers at over 90 miles per hour.

We are waiting on State Police to report more information on last night’s officer-involved shooting in Lafayette. There’s video on social media that looks like officers firing several shots at a black man holding a knife outside of a gas station. No word on the identity of the man or his injuries.
