A hurricane warning is now in effect from San Luis Pass Texas to Intracoastal City as southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas brace for impact ahead of Hurricane Laura’s arrival as a major hurricane. Hurricane conditions are expected to arrive in this area tomorrow night and State Climatologist Barry Keim says that’s when the heavy rainfall will start as well…

Models show Laura is expected to ramp up to category three strength before hitting land.

Over 400,000 Louisianans will receive federally boosted unemployment benefits tomorrow, a 900 dollar payment retroactive to August 1st. But Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Dejoie says about 87,000 unemployed will not qualify, most of them because they don’t earn enough in-state benefits.

Governor Edwards will be extending Phase 2 restrictions but for how long is uncertain at this time.   The order keeps most businesses at 50% capacity, bars closed, and masks mandatory.  Edwards says several factors contribute to the decision, including the return to campus for K-12 schools and colleges.

The current order is set to expire on Friday.

Louisiana reports 550 new COVID-19 cases, and continuing, declining hospitalizations, but unfortunately sees 33 new deaths from the disease today.

LSU plans to continue practicing this week, but they are monitoring Hurricane Laura and its impact on the Baton Rouge area. Reserve tight end Aaron Moffitt will miss the rest of the season as he’s torn his ACL. The son of head strength coach Tommy Moffitt played on special teams last season.

The Cleveland Browns confirmed today that former LSU star Grant Delpit will miss the rest of the season with an Achilles injury. Delpit went down during practice yesterday.

The Saints are off today and expected to return to training camp tomorrow. So far the reports on quarterback Jameis Winston have been good as he’ll serve as a back-up to Drew Brees. Second-year offensive lineman Erik McCoy says Winston is adapting to the new playbook and expectations…

300 dollar Federally enhanced unemployment benefits will be sent out to qualifying unemployment recipients tomorrow. Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Dejoie says this first payment is retroactive to August 1st, so expect a large payment Wednesday.

Dejoie says over 400,000 people will receive the benefits, but those receiving less than 100 dollars a week in state benefits are not eligible due to federal policy.

Even though a major storm is heading towards Louisiana, Governor Edwards says enhanced unemployment checks will still go out tomorrow. The Edwards administration says about 400-thousand Louisiana residents are eligible for 300-dollars a week and the first checks will be 900-dollars. since the benefit is retroactive to August 1st.

Tropical Storm Laura is now Hurricane Laura in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. Its maximum sustained winds have reached 75 miles per hour and it’s moving west-northwest at 17 miles per hour. The National Hurricane Center expects Laura to become a major hurricane tomorrow and maintain that intensity when it makes landfall along the Louisiana-Texas border Thursday morning.

The defending national champion LSU Tigers are ranked sixth in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 rankings. The Tigers received one first-place vote. Clemson is ranked number one, Ohio State is number two, but they will not play in the fall because of the coronavirus pandemic. Once the games start, AP voters will only rank teams that are playing.

What about the college football playoff? The C-F-P says they will begin issuing regular rankings on November 17th and select the four teams that will participate in the playoff on December 20th. The semifinals are still set for New Year’s Day, the Sugar and Rose Bowls will be the semis. The national title game is set for January 11th in Miami.

ULM has made it official, they will play at Army on September 12th. Cajuns Coach Billy Napier says receiver Cassius Allen has suffered what appears to be a significant knee injury.

At Saints camp, the coaches are trying to figure out who will start at center this season. It could be either last year’s second-round pick Erik McCoy or this year’s first-round draft pick Ceasar Ruiz. Either player could also play right guard. Coach Sean Payton says they don’t have a clear idea yet on who will play what position…

Former LSU star and Browns rookie safety Grant Delpit was carted off the field yesterday and the concern is that he injured his Achilles tendon. Shortly after Delpit got hurt, another former Tiger, starting cornerback Greedy Williams went down with a shoulder injury for the Browns.

LSU students start classes today, with many returning to in-person education for the first time since March.

LSU Interim President Thomas Galligan says when students walk into their first class they’ll notice a six and a half foot tall Plexiglas shield on the podium separating them from their instructors.

All instructors and students are mandated to wear face coverings while anywhere on campus.

Galligan says the Rec Center is back open at a limited capacity, as is the Student Union and dining options.

DeHaan says it could be a matter of days before a noticeable uptick in price hits the pump.  DeHaan adds that wholesale gas prices went up about a nickel per gallon yesterday for most of the country since the states of Texas and Louisiana are home to many of the nation’s refineries.

DeHaan says in the event that scarcity does become an issue in the days following the storm, the Gas Buddy app may be able to help in locating operational fuel sources.

It may have been a chaotic offseason but Saints Coach Sean Payton says his players are getting back into the groove of normal training camp activities. He says the past few days the emphasis has been less on-field training and more on football IQ.

Saints rookie interior lineman Cesar Ruiz is locked into a position battle with last year’s second-round selection Erik McCoy over who will get to man the center of the line and who will get kicked out to right guard. Payton says they don’t have a clear idea yet on who will play what position.

McCoy says he’s enjoying the competition and is open to moving to right guard from his native center. He also remarked on how third-string QB, former Tampa star Jamies Winston is adapting to the new playbook and expectations.
