The state hits a milestone with COVID-19 testing. Governor Edwards says Louisiana has surpassed million coronavirus tests since testing began in March. He also says the state has already passed the testing goal for the month of July and Louisiana has the second-highest testing rate of all states since the beginning of the pandemic. To date 84, 131 cases have been confirmed Hospitalizations increased by 7 to 1,369.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education adopts a list of minimum COVID safety standards that school districts will be called on to implement once classes resume. Parents, teacher’s unions, and even a board member raised concerns about whether physical classes should resume, but Ochsner Pediatrics Chair Dr. William Lennarz says current data suggests the risk is low.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue says they are having network connectivity issues with the website where front-line workers can apply for a 250-dollar hazard paycheck. Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson says the technical issue is also impacting those who are trying to file their state income taxes.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s deputies are on the hunt for a shooting suspect that left two people dead, and a third fighting for her life at a home in Westlake.  Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso says the agency is currently searching a wooded area in Beauregard Parish for 51-year-old Neil Broussard with the help from the FBI, State Police, and other agencies.

Over 2,000 new confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the state along with 14 additional deaths, but so far the hospitalization data has not been reported. Nearly 7,000 additional people are reported to have recovered from the disease, giving the state about 31,000 known ongoing cases, and the state also passed one million total COVID-19 tests conducted.

There is a new state law protecting schools from COVID-related suits, but State Education Superintendent Cade Brumley says protection can be lost if they do not follow BESE’s guidelines.

Law enforcement in south Louisiana is searching for a double homicide suspect. Authorities say 51-year-old Neil Broussard of Lake Charles killed two people in Westlake and kidnapped a 14-year-old year girl, who has been found safe. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s office believes Broussard is driving a black Hyundai Elantra.

The state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has approved the minimum health and safety standards schools need to have in place to reopen safely. Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey has said that the league will make a decision in late July on what may occur with the football season. Sankey is concerned about the rising number of coronavirus cases.

The S-E-C has decided to postpone all athletic events for volleyball, soccer, and cross country until at least September 1st. The A-C-C made a similar decision last week.

Former LSU Tiger linebacker Marcel Brooks is reportedly transferring to T-C-U. Brooks contributed to the Tigers national championship as a freshman recording eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in limited playing time. Brooks reportedly expressed a desire to play at a school closer to his home.

Louisiana Tech football has resumed its offseason workouts. They were suspended last week when a second player tested positive for COVID-19. A Tech spokesperson said the school wanted to be overly cautious.

Meanwhile, Ruston High running back Ke’Travion Bull Hargrove has de-committed from the Bulldogs. Hargrove committed to La Tech over two months ago, but since then he’s received offers from Power Five schools like South Carolina, Florida State, and Penn State.

Longtime Ragin Cajuns baseball coach Tony Robichaux will be inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association of Hall of Fame in January. The class also includes former Southern Coach Roger Cador and former Rice Coach Wayne Graham.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue begins accepting applications for a rebate available to front line essential employees today.  Secretary of Revenue Kimberly Robinson says there is a broad range of eligible Louisiana residents can apply for the $250 COVID-19 rebate.

Applications can be submitted online at FrontlineWorkers.la.gov or can be done by mail with a printable form found on the website.

Robinson says workers would have to have worked at least 200 hours from March 22 through May 14 in an eligible position.

Today should wrap up the state’s current run of excessive temps.  Heat indexes have been between 105 and 115 over the last few days.  State Climatologist Barry Keim warns that heat index values in this range can be extremely dangerous.

Keim says by the time tomorrow rolls around, the temps and heat index should become a little bit more seasonable as a very persistent heatwave spanning from Louisiana to Arizona begins to weaken and the state will go back to more typical kinds of weather.

Keim says Louisiana is basically at the climatic peak in terms of temps and heat index values.
