Outdoor plans for Easter Sunday are now in jeopardy due to severe weather in the forecast. Kevin Barnhart has the story.

Since March 9th Louisiana has reported 19,253 coronavirus cases, and on Friday 2,054 of those reported cases are currently hospitalized, 479 require the use of ventilators. To date, 755 deaths have been recorded as COVID-19 related. Numbers are updated daily at noon on our website at Louisiana Radio Network dot com.

During his briefing, Friday Governor Edwards saluted the brave medical workers who’ve been pulling incredibly long hours keeping patients alive during the epidemic.

The curve of new hospitalizations is flattening but daily reported deaths totals remain high with Louisiana adding another 53 COVID fatalities. Those fatalities should level off if hospitalizations and new infections decrease, and Governor Edwards says much of that comes down to the great work of frontline healthcare workers. He says to support their efforts the state has distributed a lot of PPE.

The largest auto insurer in Louisiana, State Farm, announces it’s providing it’s roughly one million customers a 25 percent rebate on their April and May premiums, following a decision by Allstate to do the same. ESPN reports Drew Brees will take a position as a Sunday Night Football studio analyst after he retires from the NFL. NBC won the bidding war for the highly sought after talent. He will also do game day analysis for Notre Dame games.

The New York Post reports that once Saints Quarterback Drew Brees retires he will work for N-B-C. Brees apparently chose NBC over ESPN, who is trying to improve its Monday Night Football Broadcast Booth. The New York Post report says Brees would start as a game analyst on Notre Dame Football and as a studio analyst for “Football Night in America” and could be groomed as a successor to Chris Collinsworth.

Eight former LSU players will participate in the 2020 NFL virtual draft broadcast. This means Joe Burrow, Grant Delpit, Justin Jefferson, Kristian Fulton, Lloyd Cushenberry, Patrick Queen, K’Lavon Chaisson, and Thaddeus Moss will be available for interviews once they are selected. The former Tigers are among 58 players who will participate.

ESPN reports NBA teams are united in an effort to encourage the league to push the draft from June 25th to no sooner than August 1st. Commissioner Adam Silver says a decision on when the season would re-start will not be made until May 1st.

The LHSAA has made the decision to cancel the seasons for spring sports. But what about fall sports? LHSAA executive director Eddie Bonine says football teams will receive an extra week of practice since they are missing spring football. Bonine says eligibility issues also have to be addressed…

State and local education leaders have yet to announce policies on determining if a student should advance to the next grade. Governor John Bel Edwards is expected to announce that schools will remain closed for the rest of the academic year. The LHSAA executive committee plans to meet in June to assess the situation at that time.

The X-F-L has laid off all of its staff and there are no plans to resume the league in 2021.
