Baton Rouge police have arrested the parents of an 11-week-old infant after the child was brought to the Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Baton Rouge Police Sergeant L’Jean McNeely says the child is listed in critical condition and they believe the parents may be at fault.

The child’s parents, Cole Autry and Rachel Flores have been arrested and charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

A 64-year-old man is arrested on a charge of bigamy that occurred in the Alexandria area.  Rapides Parish Sheriff Lt. Stephen Phillips says Michael Glenn Rennier, formerly of Alexandria, was identified as a suspect after his initial wife had documentation of a Vegas marriage involving her husband that she turned over to authorities, but there was never any push for a divorce before he embarked on his new romance.

Coronavirus is on the radar of the Lt. Governor’s office as tourism in Louisiana could see big losses from the spread of the illness.  Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser says one international convention has already decided to pull the plug on their New Orleans event.

Denham Springs Representative Valerie Hodges brings legislation that would mandate all Louisiana public schools to provide students the opportunity to recite the pledge of allegiance as a group. Hodges says if passed students and faculty would not be forced to recite the pledge, but schools must find a time to offer the chance.

LSU begins spring drills tomorrow and All-American wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase will be wearing the coveted number seven jersey for the national champs. Chase was the nation’s top receiver last season, setting SEC records for touchdowns and receiving yards. Also at the LSU Board of Supervisors meeting today, Coach Ed Orgeron’s new six-year nearly seven-million dollar contract is up for approval.

The Pelicans are back home tonight facing the Miami Heat. New Orleans will look to snap a three-game losing streak and then they’ll hit the road for the next four games.

LSU basketball hosts Georgia in the final regular season game of the year on Saturday. The Tigers can finish as high as second place in the league standings. They will also recognize senior Skylar Mays, who is averaging 17 points a game. It would have been Wayde Sims’ senior day, if he was not fatally shot in October 2018.

Also tomororw the Cajuns will host Arkansas State in a Sun Belt Tournament game.

LSU enters the weekend last in the SEC in hitting and second to last in slugging and on-base percentage.
Two of the top hitting teams in the country will face off this weekend in Lake Charles as the Cowboys host ULM.

McNeese is third in the country in hitting, while the Warhawks are fifth. Both teams have won four of their last five.

Also in Lake Charles, it’s the girls state basketball championships this weekend. Public schools will crown seven champions over the next two days.

A bill is introduced that would require all public schools offer students the chance to recite the pledge of allegiance. Matt Doyle has the story.

Cancer screenings, prevention, and education are at the center of a more than $600,000 grant to a cancer center in Louisiana. The three-year investment will go towards the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. It will help 12 parishes along the Mississippi River Delta with some of the highest rates of cancer and but also some of the latest-stage diagnoses.

Louisiana Tech receives a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation to foster computer science education in north Louisiana. Dean of the College of Education at Louisiana Tech Don Schillinger says the money will also help in providing freshmen and sophomore students with internship opportunities to give them a taste as to what it is like to be a STEM educator.

Ascension Parish state Rep. Kathy Edmonston breaks her silence after her DWI arrest earlier this week. State Police say her sobriety came into question after she rear-ended a vehicle. She reportedly blew a .143 breathalyzer result; nearly twice the legal limit. In a written statement, Edmonston calls the arrest a “wake up call” and asks forgiveness from her constituents.

A Baton Rouge man get life in prison for kidnapping and torturing a man in 2017. Almoine Powell was convicted of abducting & tying the victim up, pepper spraying him, waterboarding him, burning him with various objects and sodomizing him with a screwdriver. The judge said he HOPES those are THE worst things Powell has ever done.

A multi-jurisdictional task force says they’ve made a major drug bust in central Louisiana. The Natchitoches Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force says they worked in cooperation with the Rapides Parish and Grant Parish Sheriffs Offices to take over 8 pounds of suspected meth off the streets. Two people – a 37 year old man and a 35 year old woman were arrested in connection with the seizure.

This Sunday, time springs forward by an hour for Daylight Saving Time. If Haughton Republican Dodie Horton had her way, time would never change back. Horton introduced a House bill that would adopt Daylight Saving Time as the standard all year long in Louisiana. Horton says three other states have passed similar legislation, but any sort of change would hinge on federal law.

Livingston Parish Republican Sherman Mack has filed a similar bill.
A new federal rule that takes effect April 1 will require some recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to meet certain work requirements to continue receiving assistance. Essentially, adults between the ages of 18-49 who do not have children and are not disabled will have to work at least 80 hours monthly to qualify for federal assistance. That’s about 10-thousand people in our state.

Senator John Kennedy has asked President Trump for more time for Louisiana drivers’ licenses to become REAL ID compliant. After the October 1st deadline, one will not be able to fly in the U.S. without a REAL ID.
