The Army Corps of Engineers announces a plan to spend $85 million this year to deepen the lower Mississippi River to 50 feet.  Port of New Orleans spokesperson Matt Gresham says that allows for several southeast Louisiana ports to accept larger cargo ships built to take advantage of the Panama Canal’s expansion.

State Police is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting in Lafayette. The deceased has been identified at 40-year old Jeremy Todd Baham of Lafayette. Trooper Thomas Gossen says two officers approached Baham and that’s when things got physical and took a turn.

The officer involved in the incident received non-life threatening injuries.

LSU football will kick-off the 2022 and 2023 seasons by facing Florida State. The 2022 season opener will take place in the Superdome in New Orleans and the following year the two teams will meet in Orlando. LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron has hired former Rams head coach Scott Linehan to be the Tigers new passing game coordinator. Linehan has also been a former offensive coordinator in Dallas, Minnesota, Miami, and Detroit. Tiger Rag Editor Ron Higgins says most of Coach O’s coaching hires have worked, so we’ll have to wait to see if Linehan can help keep LSU’s offense humming along.

The Army Corps of Engineers announces a plan to spend $85 million this year to deepen the lower Mississippi River.  The Corps estimates a national economic benefit of $127.5 million annually.  It’s a project that has been pushed for a long time and Port of New Orleans spokesperson Matt Gresham says a study indicated that improvements offer an 80-to-1 cost-to-benefit ratio.

The project is expected to cost nearly $240 million, with the state covering more than $100 million.

Saints owner Gayle Benson responds to the controversy involving the team’s affiliation with the Archdiocese of New Orleans, and the release of a list of suspected abusive priests last year. Benson says Saints VP of Communications Greg Bensel was asked if he would help the Archdiocese prepare for the media related to the list’s release, and that his recommendation was to be honest, complete, and transparent. She says Bensel had no part in the creation of the list. The team is being sued by victims for it’s alleged role.

22-year-old Holden Matthews of Opelousas has pleaded guilty to federal and state criminal charges for setting fire to three predominately black St. Landry Parish church last spring. Former US Attorney Harry Rosenberg says Matthews didn’t have much of defense…

A 22-year-old Opelousas man suspected of burning down three African American churches in St. Landry Parish last Spring pleads guilty to federal and state criminal charges. Holden Matthews pleaded guilty to four federal counts. Former US Attorney Harry Rosenburg says Matthews faces up to 70 years in prison…

LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron has hired former Rams head coach Scott Linehan to be the Tigers new passing game coordinator. Linehan has also been a former offensive coordinator in Dallas, Minnesota, Miami and Detroit, working with quarterbacks like Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford. Linehan has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal, worth 800-thousand dollars.

Taysom Hill tells an Associated Press reporter that he views himself as a franchise quarterback and if the Saints do not, he’ll have to leave. The versatile Hill is a restricted free agent this offseason and the Saints have hinted Hill could be the guy, if Drew Brees decides to retire.

The Pelicans host Portland tonight at seven PM. New Orleans will attempt to slow down the red hot Damian Lillard, who is averaging almost 42 points and nine assists in the last ten games. Both teams are chasing Memphis for the final playoff spot in the West.

LSU basketball coach Will Wade is not discouraged, even though the Tigers are on a two-game losing streak heading into tonight’s game versus Missouri. Last week, LSU lost to previously winless Vanderbilt and failed to maintain a 14-point second-half lead and fell in overtime to Auburn on Saturday.
