Floodwaters led to the brief closure of both the east and west lanes of I-20 near Greenwood. High water issues are also a problem in Bossier Parish.

The state Senate approves legislation that would exempt diapers, tampons and other feminine hygiene products from the state’s 4.45 percent sales tax. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt voted against it, because she says the savings for families would not be significant…

Currently the state exempts sales taxes on food for home consumption, utilities and prescription drugs.

The full House soundly rejected a proposal to elect Louisiana’s governor and lieutenant governor jointly. New Orleans Representative Walt Leger’s proposal would have the governor and lieutenant governor on the same ticket, like president and vice-president. Opponents say this proposal would lead to the expansion of the governor’s power and more partisanship.

The U-S Army Corps of Engineers may have to reopen the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St. Charles Parish for a second time this year, which would be a first in the 90-year history of the flood control structure. The Mississippi River is expected to reach a height that will trigger the spillway’s reopening.

The full House convenes this morning to discuss and likely vote on a proposed 30-billion dollar budget for next fiscal year. The spending plan currently calls for teachers to receive a 12-hundred dollar increase in pay, but it does not include an additional 39-million dollars for public schools, which has been requested by the governor. The recruiting middleman that was at the center of LSU basketball coach Will Wade’s FBI wiretap scandal has been convicted in the NCAA corruption trial. A federal jury in New York found aspiring agent Christian Dawkins and youth basketball coach Merl Code guilty of bribing coaches They will be sentenced at a later date. Purported FBI wiretaps revealed in October and in March allegedly had Dawkins and Wade discussing possible payoffs for recruits.

Two of the six LSU basketball players who entered the NBA draft process have been invited to participate in next week’s NBA draft combine. Point guard Tremont Waters and Forward Naz Reid are among the 66 players invited to work in front of coaches and scouts from all 30 teams.

New Orleans Senator JP Morrell’s proposed constitutional amendment to remove the 4.45 percent state sales tax on purchases of diapers and feminine hygiene products failed to gain two-thirds support, but he brought the measure back up for a second vote, this time not as a constitutional amendment but proposing to put the state sales tax exemption in statute….

That proposal passed on a 29-5 vote and heads to the House for more consideration.

Louisiana’s Community College system will offer a new two-year associate degree in cloud computing in partnership with Amazon Web Services. Delgado interim chancellor Doctor Will Wright says this will help students get tech-related jobs…

A Senate bill aimed at a diapers and tampons sales tax exemption initially killed as a constitutional amendment finds a second life.  Initially, the bill did not receive the two-thirds support needed to pass following a 21-12 vote on the floor.  Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt says the tax exemption would not offer beneficial savings to consumers enough to justify the measure.

Louisiana Federation of Teachers Legislative Director Cynthia Posey has some problems with the current budget, starting with the fact that she says the “raise” isn’t really a raise…

The budget includes a 1,200 raise, or stipend, depending on who you ask, for teachers and a 600 dollar raise for support personnel.

Posey says she’s highly concerned about the lack of additional funding, first, because without the money additional costs like higher workman’s comp and unemployment benefits would be passed onto teachers, cutting into the raise. Second, she says our schools need new investment.

Posey says instead of the House proposal, her union is still backing the governor’s initial request for a permanent 1,000 dollar raise for teachers, a permanent 500 dollar support personnel raise, and 39 million in new funding.

A cold front heading toward the state continues to bring rain today that will stick around through the weekend.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says much of Louisiana is at risk for severe weather from this pesky frontal system that will be slowly creeping across the Bayou State.

Cut 10 (10) “…marginal risk tomorrow.”

Keim says areas of the state could see up to ten inches of rain once this system has finally moved out of the area, which means flash flooding is a concern.

River basin flooding could also prove to be problematic.

Keim says it will be a bumpy four or five days across Louisiana and says make sure to plan accordingly and keep an umbrella until at least the beginning of next week.

The Louisiana Community and Technical College system has partnered with Amazon to create a new two-year degree in cloud computing, a skill which is becoming increasingly mandatory in tech.

Governor John Bel Edwards celebrated the announcement, and says it’ll help keep more tech savy students in state after they graduate…

The “Amazon Web Service Educate” initiative is part of the company’s worldwide effort to expand access to cloud learning on the AWS systems.

Delgado interim chancellor Dr. Will Wright says the program is here by popular demand from tech companies across the state that have told him they’re in real need of these skills, with demand set to increase further in the future. Wright says they’re companies from a number of fields.

Edwards says the agreement is part of his ongoing efforts to attract tech to the state. He says like many people, he may not know exactly what these tech specialists do, but he knows it’s important to make sure they can do it.

A struggling LSU baseball team begins a series tonight against one of the SEC’s best teams. Arkansas leads the West Division with a 17-7 record, while the Tigers have lost three in a row and sit in fourth place in the West. Coach Paul Mainieri says Arkansas is an outstanding team, but they plan to battle as hard as they can

A statewide poll funded by Harris, Deville & Associates indicates that Governor Edwards leads the October primary, and Support for Edwards rises to 40% in a run-off with Congressman Abraham who gets 36% with 24% undecided. LSU has won 13 of their last 14 SEC regular-season series against the Razorbacks, including seven in a row. The Hogs are playing well. They are 17-7 in league play and they’ve hit 64 home runs, the second most in the SEC.

Meanwhile, Louisiana Tech gets ready to host Western Kentucky this weekend. But because of the extensive damage to J-C Love Field, the three-game set that starts Friday will take place on the ULM campus.

A federal jury in New York found aspiring agent Christian Dawkins guilty of conspiracy to commit bribery and bribery. He was facing six counts. Former Adidas consultant Merl Code was also convicted of conspiracy to commit bribery. They will be sentenced at a later date.

The Saints have announced the signing of wide receiver and return specialist Deonte Harris to a three-year contract. Harris is five-foot-six and played at Assumption College, the same Massachusetts school that produced former LSU kicker Cole Tracey. Harris is the all-time leader in the NCAA for combined return touchdowns, with 14. He also caught 41 passes during his senior season for an 18-yard average and had eight TDs.

Several western parishes are under a tornado watch until 11pm, including Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, De Soto, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, Vernon, and Webster. Additionally, a flash flood watch is in effect through seven AM tomorrow for northwest and north central Louisiana.  Matt Hemingway with the National Weather Service says rainfall totals are the highest south of I-20 and north of I-10

The House unanimously approves legislation that would legalize industrial hemp, and regulate the sale of hemp based CBD. The state government has indicated that sales of CBD oils and tablets are illegal in Louisiana. Gonzales Representative Clay Shexnayder says the bill legalizes those sales.
