Hundreds of people remain without power in Acadiana and three people are recovering from minor injuries after an EF-1 tornado cut through Ville Platte yesterday morning. Officials say over 50 homes and businesses were damaged.

One person was killed and four others are suffering from gunshot wounds from a shootout that occurred in Alexandria in the early morning hours. Authorities responded to the scene in the 19-hundred block of Bacon Street and found one man dead.

The state department of education is collecting information on silent alarm systems. Assistant superintendent of Education Erin Bendzily…

The online fantasy sports regulatory bill has an amendment on it that stipulates you can only play, if you’re at over 21-year-old only establishments like video poker parlors, bars, or casinos. Video poker lobbyist Alton Ashy advocated for the amendment and says legalizing the activity without restrictions provides no benefits to Louisiana businesses.

A bill to legalize recreational use of marijuana is still alive in the legislative session and is awaiting a hearing in the House Criminal Justice Committee. Baton Rouge Representative Ted James is one of the supporters because he says a well regulated program is the best step forward…

Under the proposal, it would be the state department of ag that would hand out permits to up to 15 companies who grow the marijuana that would be sold to those over 21-years-old.

LSU baseball enters the SEC Tournament as a 5-seed and they’ll play South Carolina in the late game in Hoover, Alabama on Tuesday night. The Tigers lost on Saturday in extra innings to Auburn, which ended a four-game winning streak. Zack Hess blew the save in the ninth and gave up the go-ahead run in the 11th inning and says Saturday’s loss shouldn’t disrupt the momentum they have entering the postseason…

The Southern Jaguars punched their ticket into the NCAA Tournament with a 15-0 win over Alabama State in the SWAC Championship game in New Orleans yesterday. Eli Finney threw 8.1 innings of shutout baseball and third baseman Tyler LaPorte was named the tournament’s MVP after driving in five runs on Sunday. Southern will find out next Monday, which Regional they’ll play in.

Louisiana Tech is a three seed in the NCAA tournament and the Bulldogs will play Marshall on Wednesday morning in Biloxi, Mississippi. Tech took two of three from the Thundering Herd in the regular season.

ULM and UL-Lafayette are both in the Sun Belt Tournament, but they’ll play in Tuesday opening round which will be single elimination. The Warhawks will take on South Alabama and the Cajuns will face Appalachian State.

Southeastern Louisiana is the three seed in the Southland Tourney. The Lions will play Stephen F Austin on Wednesday morning. The Demons will take on Central Arkansas and McNeese faces Incarnate Word in the late game on Wednesday.

Tulane is the three seed in the American Athletic Conference and the Green Wave will take on Central Florida.

LSU softball advances to the Super Regional with a 5-1 win over Texas Tech, while the Cajuns lost twice to Ole Miss and were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

The Pelicans have hired Trajan Langdon as its general manager. While LSU’s Javonte Smart has announced he’s returning for his sophomore season.

A Jefferson Parish firefighter spoke at the House hearing, saying he did not catch the symptoms of PTSD early enough, even going as far to say the activity among lawmakers were triggering flashbacks.

For the second year, Louisiana state parks will be partnering with the Workforce Commission to hire people with disabilities and special needs to fill jobs for the summer season. Assistant Secretary for the Office of State Parks Brandon Burris says the idea came from Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser.

Burris says the program was popular last year, and many of those that were hired for the summer season ended up staying on beyond the tourist season.

If someone with disabilities or special needs is interesting in the summer work, Burris recommends contacting one of the twenty one state parks or eighteen historic sites around the state. He adds the information can also be found on the Louisiana Workforce Commission website.

The House is set to consider a recreational marijuana regulation and decriminalization bill in the Criminal Justice committee before the end of the session. The bill would authorize 15 grower permits, and would place them under the Department of Agriculture.

Baton Rouge Representative Edmond Jordan says decriminalizing and taxing marijuana is a popular idea nationwide…

Nine states have legalized the purchase of regulated recreational marijuana.

Baton Rouge Representative Ted James says refusing to legalize weed won’t keep kids from getting their hands on untested street product.

The legendary film was shot in Natchitoches and Director of Marketing for the Natchitoches Convention and Visitors Bureau Kelli West says Steel Magnolias will also be shown in various theaters around the state. She says they’ll have a display at the Perkins Rowe theater in Baton Rouge…

The House voted 66-32 in favor of allowing the Legislative Auditor to access income tax records of Medicaid recipients, sparking a testy back and forth between bill author, Prairieville Representative Tony Bacala and New Orleans Representative Gary Carter, who voted against it.  Bacala says a recent audit discovered 1,672 people were enrolled in the program making six figures.  Carter accused Bacala of subjecting poor people to scrutiny he wouldn’t subject businesses too…

The state’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is the lowest on record dating back to 1976.  The rate dropped to 3.5% in April in the numbers that come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Workforce Commission Director Ava Dejoie says it is welcomed news for the state.
