A host of Louisiana’s most powerful politicians and lobbyists are in DC this week for this year’s Washington Mardi Gras. Matt Doyle has more.

A Shreveport woman who is accused of failing to send her two children to school for almost two years has plead guilty to improper supervision.  35 year old Fathimah Slack, admitted she failed to send her children, ages 13 & 14, to school for the entire 2017-18 school year as well as the current school year until November.  She’s been sentenced to 30 days behind bars.

 

 

Until the conclusion of the NFC Championship, many throughout Louisiana had plans of watching the Black and Gold this Sunday compete in the Big Game.  However, some sports bars and restaurants are going to make sure those plans stay intact.  In Lafayette, Fast Eddie, host of the Big Morning Show on Big 102.1 says his station has taken over Smitty’s Wings on Congress Street to watch the encounter between the Saints and the Colts from 2010.  Eddie says they are going to treat it like it’s a live game.

Fast Eddie says the party will feature a referee piñata and “pin the tail on Roger Goodell.”
In North Louisiana, people will be backing the Rams as former West Monroe football standout Andrew Whitworth is competing in the big game.  Senator Mike Walsworth says he’s known Whitworth a very long time, and the general vibe of his old stomping grounds is that community is rooting for him this weekend.

Dakota Theriot, the man accused of killing five people last weekend in Livingston and Ascension Parish, is back in Louisiana after waiving extradition on Friday.  Theriot had fled to Virginia where he was arrested Sunday at his grandmother’s home.  Authorities have obtained a confession and he could face the death penalty on five murder charges.  Theriot reportedly showed little emotion in his first court appearance.

A new exhibit produced by the New Orleans WW2 Museum is opening in Natchitoches today. Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser hopes the success of the WW2 Museum’s northern expedition to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches will convince locals to take the trip south to see the rest of the institution’s wonders.

The exhibit will open with a reception from 5 to 8pm this evening

 

Louisiana movers and shakers are temporarily migrating north for the winter for this year’s Washington Mardi Gras. The celebration started Thursday and ends Sunday, and features the governor, congressmen, and a host of lobbyists and industry leaders. DC Mardi Gras King Ray Brandt says it’s a packed schedule.

West Monroe Senator Mike Walsworth understands Saints fans are not rooting for the Rams, but at least root for Whitworth…

D-C Mardi Gras King Ray Brandt says the big party is something both Republicans and Democrats agree to attend and he hopes that in the meetings that surround the event common ground can be reached…

The celebration is also a chance to raise money, Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards and Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry have both held fundraisers during this week.

A Shreveport woman has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after failing to send her children to school for nearly two years. 35-year-old Fathimah Slack has pleaded guilty to improper supervision after she admitted that her 13 and 14-year-old kids were allowed to play hooky for more than a year and a half. The teenagers are now in the custody of a family member.

We are expecting to hear from Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis today for the first time since he demanded a trade out of New Orleans. But will he get traded to the Lakers first. Los Angeles has offered their entire roster, except for LeBron James in an effort to bring Davis to L-A.

In college hoops last night, ULM lost to Coastal Carolina 92-81. Appalachian State dribbled past UL-Lafayette 104-77. Florida Atlantic led from start to finish in its 61-51 win over Louisiana Tech.

Many Saints fans are not watching the Super Bowl, and even fewer are rooting for the Rams, but in North Louisiana that might not be the case as former West Monroe football standout and LSU star Andrew Whitworth is competing in the big game for Los Angeles. State Senator Mike Walsworth says many in West Monroe are rooting the 13-year veteran….

A federal judge in New Orleans has rejected a lawsuit filed by two Saints fans who were seeking to force NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to implement a rule that could lead to a do over of the NFC Championship game, because of a missed pass interference call. It was a considered a legal long shot from the beginning.

The 19th ranked LSU Basketball team just completed its first undefeated January in nearly 40 years and now they’ll look to start February off on the right note when they host Arkansas on Saturday. The Tigers already brought down the Hogs earlier this season when they beat them in overtime in Fayetteville. Coach Will Wade on the rematch
