Governor Edwards delivered the keynote address today at a statewide business summit that brought about 500 business leaders together to discuss how to move Louisiana’s economy forward. Edwards says the state has made a significant investment in an effort to produce more graduates for the technology sector

A 13-year-old is dead after the Yamaha ATV he was riding collided with a Peterbuilt log truck.  Troopers responded to the crash just before 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon on LA Hwy 772 just east of Jena.  Master Trooper Scott Moreau says the victim was identified as Wayden Savell and was pronounced dead at the scene. 72-year old Lloyd Worsham was behind the wheel of the log truck and was treated for minor injuries.

With tax season comes the need to be on the lookout for scammers who are hoping to exploit taxpayers in an effort to nab a dishonest dollar. Louisiana Department of Revenue spokesperson Byron Henderson says some scammers are resorting preying on people via phone calls.  Often they will demand immediate payment for tax debts via a credit card or other means.

UNO is in sole possession of third place in Southland after the Privateers ended Southeastern Louisiana’s five game winning streak with an 89-68 win. Bryson Robinson led the way with 23 points as he hit five three-pointers.

Nicholls took Southland Conference leader Sam Houston State into overtime, but the Bearkats dribbled past the Colonels 84-74.

And McNeese ended its five-game losing streak with an 83-75 win over Central Arkansas.

In college baseball, Louisiana Tech improved to 4-0 with a 3-2 win over the Ragin Cajuns in 10 innings. Senior Mason Robinson drove in the winning run with a two-out single. The Cajuns fall to 1-and-3 on the season. Tulane clobbered Lamar 22-10 as junior infielder Kody Hoese tied a school record with three home runs in one game.

The voice of Alex Box Stadium, Bill Franques, is taking a leave of absence as he needs treatment for prostate cancer. Franques says it was caught early enough that he expects a speedy recovery.

In high school sports, there are a couple of high profile head coaching moves in the Baton Rouge area. Chad Mahaffey is leaving University High after leading the Cubs to straight Division Two Championships to take the head coaching job at Walker.

And former LSU quarterback Marcus Randall is the new head coach at Woodlawn High School. Prior to the 2017 season, Randall was fired as head coach at Southern Lab after the LHSAA penalized the school for recruiting violations. Randall has since sued the LHSAA and Southern Lab for defamation and another hearing in that case is in April.

Ultimately the taxpayer is responsible financially and legally for all information submitted on a return.

Also, avoid hiring a preparer who bases their fee based on a percentage of the refund.

A Baton Rouge school board recently shot down a several hundred thousand dollar Exxon ITEP request request.
But Governor John Bel Edwards stood by his decision to allow local districts, as opposed to a state board, to determine whether or not they wanted to offer ITEP requests. Edwards says they will not reconsider the decision.

The proposal comes with a three million dollar price tag in a session that will be dominated by debates about raising teacher pay, and issue with a cost upwards of 100 million dollars. The group, Take Em Down NOLA, is asking the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club to stop wearing back face paint during the Zulu Parade on Fat Tuesday. But Zulu leaders have said the face paint will not come off as the black makeup was never intended to insult or degrade African-Americans.

A task force recommends Louisiana should allow foster kids to stay in the system through the age of 21, instead of 18. State Department of Children and Family Services Secretary Marketa Garner Walters says it would cost an additional three-million dollars to do so. Walters says it’s a wise investment and hopes legislators will go for the idea, especially since the state budget doesn’t look as bad as previous years…

Governor Edwards has brought 500 business leaders to Baton Rouge today for a summit. The state Republican Party says it’s really a taxpayer-funded campaign event for Edwards’ re-election campaign. But Economic Development Secretary Don Pierson says the event is underwritten by corporate sponsors and the governor is just doing his job…

The St. Landry Sheriff’s office has announced the arrest of a Ville Platte man who allegedly beat a disabled veteran at a gas stateion. Deputy Chief Eddie Thibodaux says surveillance video caught Kenneth Shergold hitting the victim numerous times with a tire iron and he attempted to assault a woman at a Super Walmart Center in Ville Platte…

Shergold has been charged with one count of aggravated second-degree battery.

A crash involving an empty log truck and an ATV claimed the life of a Jena teenager Wednesday in LaSalle Parish. State Police say the ATV driven by Wayden Savell entered Louisiana Highway 772 and was in the direct path of the 18-wheeler be driven by Lloyd Lee Worsham. State police want to remind the public that ATV are illegals on public roadways.

The crash is under investigation.

Skylar Mays had 18 points to lead LSU. The Tigers are usually a good free throw shooting team, but they were not last night as they were 16 of 25 from the charity striple.

Nicholls took the top team in the Southland to overtime but Sam Houston State ended up winning 84-74 in Huntsville, Texas. Gavin Peppers had 21 points in a losing effort. McNeese snapped a five-game losing streak with an 83-75 overtime win over Central Arkansas. Southeastern Louisiana’s five-game winning streak was snapped as the Lions lsot the Privateers 89-68. The Privateers shot 60-percent from the field and hit 14 three-pointers. And Houston Baptist defeated Northwestern State 92-54.

In football news…LSU defensive tackle Dominic Livingston says in a social media post that family issues are why he’s entered the NCAA Transfer portal. The Houston native played in just one game as a true freshman last season.

The Saints name Phil Galiano as an assistant special teams coach. He was the special teams coordinator at Penn State last season and also served as an assistant special teams coach for Tampa Bay in 2012 and 13.
