An 18-year-old man is dead after a shooting involving two LSU football players in the Scotlandville area of Baton Rouge.  The incident happened just after noon on Saturday as the two players went to meet with 18-year-old Kobe Johnson to sell him an electronic item posted for sale online.  Baton Rouge Police Sgt. L’Jean McKneely says it appears one of the athletes shot Johnson out of self-defense.

Police are hunting for the shooter in an Amite bar shooting that left a 50-year-old dead last night. The shooting occurred around midnight, and authorities are warning the public that the suspect is currently armed and dangerous, and unaccounted for. In another incident, a 10 year-old-boy and a 45-year-old woman were murdered just up the road in Independence over night as well. A suspect is still being saught.

The Edwards Administration is celebrating 14 straight months of year to year job gains for the month of November. New Orleans led all cities at 12,500 jobs added over the year, followed by Baton Rouge at 6,300 jobs, but Workforce Commission Chief Economist Ali Bustamante says he was particularly impressed by big gains in two areas.

Hammond is currently at an all-time high for employment.

Bustamante gives a lot of the credit to increased education spending, and the Medicaid expansion.

But the state did see plummeting personal income growth in the third quarter. At 2.3 percent, it’s down more than four percent from the first quarter. Governor Edwards put much of the blame for the drop on tariffs, and Bustamante says the numbers back that up.

The National Flood Insurance Program extension that runs through February 8th has been signed by the President, a piece of legislation separate from the ongoing government shutdown. President Trump warned that the shutdown could go on for a very long time if Democrats did not accept 5.7 billion for border wall construction.  Senator Bill Cassidy says they had the votes for an extension to February 8th, but..

A quarter of the government is closed, meaning furloughs for hundreds of thousands of federal workers, and mandatory, unpaid work time for those deemed “essential”. Historically back pay has been allotted for government closures after a funding bill is signed.

Louisiana’s longest-serving Supreme Court justice has died.  Former Chief Justice Pascal Calogero was 87.  He was first elected to the state’s highest court in 1972, serving for nearly 36 years.  For 18 years, he was chief justice, before retiring in 2008.  Clancy DuBos, who once served as clerk for Calogero, says  Calogero cared deeply about the job, reading every word submitted to the court, and considered his role as his duty and calling to the judicial system.

The National Retail Federation says holiday shopping procrastination is at an all-time high, and spokesperson Katherine Cullen says the main reason people are putting off the shopping is that they are still trying to figure out what to purchase.  She adds men are most likely to put off shopping until the last minute.

A partial government shutdown is now in effect, with a quarter of agencies losing funding and an estimated 800,000 federal workers receiving furloughs for the holiday season. The Preisdnet says it could be “for a very long time” as he, and a coalition of House Republicans, seeks 5.7 billion for the border wall. Senator Bill Cassidy blames Democrats for the budget hold-up, and says a fully funded government bill would be possible if they would accept the border wall funding.

Studies show depression increases during holiday seasons, and Office of Behavior Health Medical Director Dr. James Hussey says weight gain from winter celebrations, increased holiday workplace demands and deadlines, and social isolation can to spiraling in depression prone people.
