With two months left until the November election to crown a new Secretary of State, you may have noticed a lack of marketing materials from candidates on the ballot. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the reason why is, compared to other positions, candidates for the gig don’t see many donations.
Cut 4 (11) “…of State does.”
Pinsonat says in comparison to other statewide positions, no other seat has fewer contributions, because not many know what the job entails.
Cut 5 (09) “…talking about millions.”
Pinsonat says raising notable funds on the campaign trail for this position is almost an impossible task.
Cut 6 (10) “…pure and simple economics.”
Pinsonat adds that voters can expect to see the campaigns having more visibility as they start spending the money they do have just before the election.

There’s been some controversy about LSU’s decision to adopt holistic review when considering applications from new students. The review process would factor in more than just a high school senior’s ACT and GPA, and incorporate other elements for consideration. Board of Regents member Richard Lipsey, not speaking for the board, says the move would hurt both LSU and regional colleges
Cut 10 (13) “…the state.“
But LSU Vice President of Enrollment Jose Aviles says that’s just not the case, and holistic review does not lower standards or pull in students who shouldn’t be at a state level school. Aviles says they utilized the method during the last enrollment period and saw higher ACT scores despite adding 1,000 students.
Cut 11 (11) “…that group.”
LSU requires a 22 ACT and a 3.0 GPA for attendance.
Aviles says the system allows the university to analyze a student’s senior year course load, their extracurricular work, and to put GPAs in the context of the school they came from.
Cut 12 (12) “…students elected.”
Lipsey says he’s concerned that such a change could incentivize the legislature to get involved with the school system if it determines that LSU is trying to change entry standards for students, or pull in more out of state students at the expense of locals.
Cut 13 (10) “…politics.”
