LSU has adopted and begun enforcing a new policy that bars on campus organizations from distributing hard liquor at their gatherings and events. The policy has also been adopted by 6,100 fraternities across the nation in a push to curb alcohol abuse. LSU Dean of Students Mari Fuentes-Martin says they considered the proposal in spring, and got everyone on board to start the year.

The North-American Interfraternity Conference national policy is now in effect at organizations on over 800 campuses.

The Louisiana Department of Health reports 47 women died from pregnancy-related causes in a six-year span starting in 2011, one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the nation. There’s been national attention paid to the notable increase in deaths, but there’s still debate as to exactly why the numbers are skyrocketing. L-D-H Secretary Dr. Rebekah Gee says while there may not be a consensus as to why there’s some good steps that can be taken to reduce the totals.

LSU is coming off a victory over Miami, while the Lions lost last week to ULM. But Southeastern Quarterback Chason Virgil threw for 358 yards. LSU Coach Ed Orgeron says he’s impressed with the Fresno State transfer.

That’s due to the legislature’s decision to end state sales tax holidays in the final budget compromise from the special session. But local sales tax exemptions are still in effect.  Local Sales Tax Board Executive Director Roger Bergeron says the often notable difference in local tax rates won’t matter this weekend.

The back of a Mandeville synagogue was covered swastikas and other Nazi symbols and messages that were discovered Wednesday morning. The phrase “Synagogue of Satan” and “burn” were clearly displayed on the Northshore Jewish Congregation’s walls, along with white supremacist code numbers. Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker says they’re looking for information from the public, because the time frame when it could have occurred was so wide.

A Saints victory over Tampa Bay would put the Black and Gold up a full game over Atlanta after one week. The Falcons lost to the Eagles 18-12 last night. And ratings for the game show that the TV audience was bigger in New Orleans than Atlanta.

The LSU Board of Supervisors meets today and they’ll discuss putting up a statue outside of Alex Box Stadium of legendary baseball coach Skip Bertman. Bertman led the Tigers to five national championships and if it gets approval, construction would begin in November.

Southeastern Louisiana is not expected to keep it close tomorrow night when they face 11th ranked LSU. Lions Coach Chris Scelfo says the key to a good showing in Tiger Stadium is to practice well and then play the game like you practice

A 21-year-old Lafayette man who police say was behind the wheel when he struck East Baton Rouge Councilman Buddy Amoroso as he was riding his bike in West Feliciana Parish this summer has been indicted on reckless operation and not the more serious charge of negligent homicide. A police report says Nicholas Alexander was traveling below the posted speed limit.

If you buy guns, ammo or certain hunting supplies today through Sunday you will not have to pay local sales taxes. This weekend used to be known as the Second Amendment Sales Tax weekend, but the legislature did away with sales tax holidays in the last special session. However for this particular holiday, local sales taxes remain exempted, so Local Sales Tax Board Executive Director Roger Bergeron says every parish charges their own sales tax rate, but you will not have to pay it when you purchase guns, ammo or hunting supplies…

The former LSU student charged with negligent homicide in the suspected hazing death of Maxwell Gruver will stand trial on July 8th. Also three other former students, charged with hazing, have agreed to work with prosecutors in an effort to convict Matthew Naquin.

Robert Summerhays will be the first new federal judge in Lafayette in over 25 years. The U-S Senate has confirmed Summerhays appointment, who has been working as a federal bankruptcy judge in Louisiana since 2006.

Eunice Police arrest four young men after they were allegedly seen on an Instagram livestream waving guns and threatening to go around shooting randomly. Authorities say the men arrested are associated with a gang in Eunice called Goons for Life.
