LSU’s bad start to the 2018 season got worse today. Coach Paul Mainieri announced shortstop Josh Smith will miss at least a month because of a stress reaction in his vertebrae. Mainieri said Hal Hughes will play shortstop during Smith’s absence.

In Starkville, former LSU hitting coach and Tulane star Andy Cannizaro stepped down as head coach of Mississippi State. It’s unclear what led to the move, but Cannizzaro released a statement that said he had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but unfortunately he made some poor decisions. Cannizzaro added that he hopes the fans and people affected will one day forgive him.

On the baseball diamond tonight, Louisiana Tech has its home opener as they face McNeese State, who is winless on the season. Northwestern State is at ULM. Both teams are 2-1. Southeastern Louisiana takes on Alcorn State in Hammon, while UNO hosts Jackson State.

LSU hosts Vanderbilt tonight looking to improve its league record to 7-9. The Tigers have an RPI of 75 and we’ll need a few more wins to get on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament. But Tigers Coach Will Wade says his team is focused on building momentum rather than looking ahead to Selection Sunday….

The House Ways and Means committee looked at various bills today that would make changes to the state’s tax code in an effort to reduce a billion dollar budget gap that starts July 1st. But it was clear during today’s discussion, many Republicans oppose tax increases, especially changes to the income tax brackets.

The state attorney general’s office has taken control of the state’s lawsuit against opioid manufacturers. There was a dispute between the governor and the A-G-’s office on who should control the suit that accuses drug companies of making the opioid epidemic worse. Chief Deputy for the Attorney General, Bill Stiles, is optimistic the suit will be successful…

The crawfish’s name is Emile and received the offical pardon during a unique ceremony at the old U-S Mint in New Orleans. Emilie was taken to a nearby State Park to burrow in the mud without fear. Nungesser hopes the rest of the crawfish can be caught, so the price at the market can go down…

The picture had the caption: “If we want to make America great again, we will have to make evil people fear punishment again.” Tangipahoa Parish council member  Louis Joseph says it was a bad idea.

And with a one-billion-dollar shortfall, it’s unlikely extra money will go towards the 47-thousand public school teachers. Stiles says the suit is in the interest of all Louisianans, as the opioid epidemic is a problem that cuts across racial and class lines.

Schools in Evangeline Parish are closed today because of social media threats. Officials say the schools have been cleared of any threat. A 15-year-old was arrested arrested for an online threat.

Governor John Bel Edwards and Attorney General Jeff Landry have agreed to coordinate efforts in the State of Louisiana’s litigation against opioid manufacturers.

Under this agreement, the Attorney General’s office will take over primary responsibility for the suit filed by the Louisiana Department of Health in the 19th Judicial District Court. Furthermore, the AG’s office will lead the efforts with other state agencies and departments to pursue all claims Louisiana has as a result of the opioid crisis.

Huge news out of Starkville. Mississippi State Baseball Coach Andy Cannizaro has resigned and former Kentucky Head Coach Gary Henderson will serve as interim coach. In a statement, Cannizaro says he had a wonderful opportunity at Mississippi State, but made some poor decisions. He asks that the fans forgive him. In 2017, Cannizaro led State to a 40-27 record and an appearance in the Super Regionals. Cannizaro is a former assistant coach at LSU and had a standout playing career at Tulane.

LSU remains ranked after losing two of three to Notre Dame, but they dropped in all four major polls. They fell seven spots in D-1 baseball to number 23. The Tigers host UNO tomorrow night.

Last night, Nicholls won its first game by beating Stony Brook 14-7. Tonight, Louisiana Tech hosts winless McNeese State. Northwestern State is at ULM.Both teams are 2-1.

LSU basketball hosts Vanderbilt tonight at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Coach Will Wade’s team is going after its fifth straight win at home…

ULM junior forward Travis Munnings has been named Sun Belt Player of the week. Munnings has helped the Warhwaks win four straight games.

Nicholls Roddy Peters is the Southland men’s basketball player of the week. Peters has put the Colonels in position to wins their first Southland championship since 1988.

The LSU football team is short at cornerbacks next season, but they are trying to use current players on the roster to build depth at that position. Cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond said on ESPN 104-5 in Baton Rouge last night that Mannie Neterhly will move from wide receiver to cornerback.

Governor John Bel Edwards addressed the legislature, calling on the state’s governing body to put party politics aside. If no deal is struck, TOPS, higher Ed, and healthcare would see massive cuts. The governor called on lawmakers to adopt his plan that would reduce the state sales tax, and replace the funds by widening the tax base, removing certain business sales tax exemptions, and compressing income tax brackets.

Because the budget is a revenue issue, it must be addressed during a special session this year. Edwards says putting a deal off until a possible June special session would have major repercussions for higher ED in the 2018-2019 college academic year.

Abraham says in the days of lightning fast social media Louisiana voters are less likely to consider where a candidate is from… and more likely to hear his message.

On Monday a 15 year old boy was arrested for allegedly making threats on social media to shoot students at an Evengeline Parish school. Ville Platte Police launched an investigation after residents reported seeing the threat on line.All parish schools will be searched to determine if any of the threats were credible.

Tangiopahoa school board member Mike Whitlow allegedly shared a picture of a noose on a Facebook message that read “if we want to make America great again we have to make evil people fear punishment again.”

Whitlow has deleted the post and apologized Tangipahoa parish council member Louis Joseph says he is offended by the post.

A female employee at False River Academy died Monday afternoon in a vehicle accident that occurred on the New Roads campus. 66 year old Edith Atkinson was killed when she was pinned between her husband’s truck and a school bus. Her 74 year old husband was driving the truck.

Will Wade’s LSU men’s basketball team is close to completing an astonishing turn around less than a year after the Tigers bottomed out at 10-21 last year. A win tonight versus Vanderbilt would give LSU 16 victories and guarantee a winning record for this season.  Wade says a big part of the turnaround is due to his team locking down the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
