An announcement could come as early as today on who will be LSU’s starting quarterback for the season opener against BYU. Senior Danny Etling is expected to get the nod, but offensive coordinator Matt Canada likes what he’s seen from freshman Myles Brennan…:

Canada says Etling looks like a better quarterback after undergoing back surgery, and is giving it his all to get the starting job.

Once again not surprisingly, Alabama is No. 1 on the AP preseason Top 25. LSU was ranked No. 13 in the poll, one spot lower than in the coaches survey published earlier this month. Rounding out the top five are Ohio State, then Florida State, USC and Clemson.

KSLA is reporting that Shreveport is being considered a finalist to be the home city of the New Orleans Pelicans affiliate for the NBA’s development league. The other finalist is Pensacola, Florida. Shreveport Mayor Ollie Tyler announced late Monday that she intends to move forward with a new $100 million dollar mixed use complex to be built in the north side of downtown.

The Sports Business Journal said Monday that Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL are nearing a new five-year contract extension that would be good through 2024. The report indicates the deal would be similar to his current contract which expires in 2019.

It didn’t take long for Mike VII merchandise to hit the shelves. The new mascot at LSU was introduced Monday, and the gift shop next door to his habitat debuted a new line of products in honor of the 11-month-old Tiger. Mike VII arrived on campus last week and underwent nearly seven days of an indoor quarantine to make sure he was healthy. And with that clean bill of health, be becomes Mike VII.

Today Governor John Bel Edwards is slated to meet with new FEMA Administrator Brock Long. The governor’s communications director Richard Carbo says the two will hit on many issues, including the devestating flooding the state experienced in 2016…:

Michael Tyler, better known as Louisiana rapper Mystikal, has turned himself in to authorities in Caddo Parish on rape charges. Sgt. Paula Farquhar (far-kwar), with the Shreveport Police Department, says Tyler is accused of raping a woman at a casino last year…:

Wildlife and Fisheries agents in Calcasieu Parish have arrested a man in the fatal boating incident Sunday that killed an 8-year-old boy. Agents say that 35-year-old Eddie Dunwoody of Texas was operating a 19-foot bass boat and was impaired when he crashed the vessel. A child occupant sustained fatal injuries in the crash.

Long led the Alabama Emergency Management Agency from 2008 to 2011 and was State Incident Commander during the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill. He also previously worked as a Hurricane Program Manager at FEMA during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Carbo says Long already has a great relationship with the governor and others in his administration.

Michael Tyler, better known as Louisiana rapper Mystikal, has turned himself into authorities in Caddo Parish after a warrant for his arrest was issued. Sgt. Paula Farquhar (far-kwar) with the Shreveport Police Department says Tyler along with a 26-year-old Texas man have been charged with first degree rape. She says an investigation was launched into a sexual assault last year.

Farquhar says Tyler’s bond has been set at two-million dollars. She says it’s not smart to make judgements about the case just yet….

Authorities are still searching for 42-year-old Tenichia Wafford, of Texas, who is charged with one count of Accessory after the fact to first degree rape for allegedly trying to convince the victim to drop the charges against Mystikal. Farquhar says the public is making their own assumptions about the case involving the rapper and the victim.

A 20-million dollar annual federal grant has been awarded to the state Department of Education to help struggling public schools. Assistant Education Superintendent Kunjan Narechania (Nara-tawn-e-yah) says schools over the next few weeks will apply for the money and those with the best plans for progress will receive the funds.

A struggling school is defined as a school that earned a performance rating of a D or an F for the last three years and currently 225 schools in Louisiana fit this description. Narechania says districts can choose any number of interventions that they think will help support their students.

17-percent of Louisiana schools are eligible for this money and Narechania says many of the students that attend these schools fail to reach the mastery score on LEAP tests.

The last time the majority of the sun was eclipsed by the moon in the U.S. was 1979. Sean Mahoney, a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering, says he waited for hours in line to receive a pair of protective glasses.

LSU has a new mascot. Dr. Baker, Mike VII’s veterinarian, officially introduced the new live tiger this morning and released him into his newly renovated outdoor habitat. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Metairie is telling his colleagues that he will wait until his doctors give him the okay, before he returns to the Capitol. A spokesperson for the Republican lawmaker says Scalise was on a conference call with GOP legislators today to discuss spending bills. Scalise was shot in June in the hip and is undergoing inpatient rehabilitation, after undergoing several surgeries.

The department of children and family services has collected more than half a million dollars in child support payments through MoneyGram so far this year. Child Support Enforcement Director Lydia Scales says it’s made it easier for noncustodial parents who are unbanked to pay their child support, because they can now make payments in cash.

Minden Police arrest a 25-year-old for allegedly taking a two-month old child from his home and leaving him underneath an I-20 overpass. Authorities are still trying to determine why 25-year-old Kyshaun Wilson kidnapped the toddler and left the infant under a bridge. Wilson is friends with the people who lived at the home taking care of the baby. Wilson reportedly told a homeless person he left a child under a bridge in Minden and the child was found sleeping under the Sibley exit.
