Also headed to the lower chamber floor is a bill to set up statewide rules for ride sharing services like Uber and Lyft. Supporters say this would be better for consumers if rates didn’t vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

McNeese State remains first in the Southland heading into tonight’s home contest against LSU-Alexandria in Lake Charles. The Cowboys are going for their 30th win of the season.

Southeastern wraps up a two-game season series with Tulane tonight in New Orleans. The Lions are riding a five-game winning streak. The Green Wave has won nine of its last 15 contests.

UNO takes on Grambling State in a neutral site game played in Biloxi.

Today ULM opens the final month of the regular season with a pair of midweek games against Ole Miss beginning tonight in Oxford.

At the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, in a sudden death playoff Monday, Cameron Smith hit a 3 and half foot birdie putt on the fourth hole which gave him and partner Jonas Blixt a win over Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown. Kisner helped forced the extra day following a 94 and a half foot chip shot for an Eagle following a 6 hour weather delay Sunday.

Southeastern second baseman Carson Crites was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week. The past week Crites went 8 for 16 at the plate with a pair of home runs, six RBIs and five runs scored.

Tigers basketball coach Will Wade announces that Jeremy Combs will transfer to LSU in the summer after he receives his degree from North Texas. The six-foot-seven forward will be eligible to play next season. Combs averaged 10 points and six rebounds last season, despite an ankle injury that forced him to miss 16 games. Wade and his wife Lauren welcomed a new baby girl Caroline Elizabeth this week.

Congressman Clay Higgins has sent a letter to Governor John Bel Edwards urging him to take action to keep Louisiana’s confederate monuments in place. The Liberty Place monument in New Orleans was already removed. Higgins says this is something that has to be done at the state level…:

A study by the LSU Public Policy Research Lab and the Louisiana Policy Institute for Children finds a lack of quality childcare costs employers and employees over a billion dollars a year. LPIC Executive Director Melanie Bronfin says Louisiana has cut funding to early child care programs 70-percent since 2008….:

Bronfin says a way to solve these problems is to stop cutting money to pay for the Louisiana School Readiness Tax Credits.

Lawmakers are faced with the task of deciding how to deal with a projected $440 million dollar budget deficit. Apcar says poll participants can select “Yes” or “No” to a number of different options related to revenue and spending, with the dollar amounts included for each….:

Apcar says the website aims to teach Louisianians about the complexities of the state’s finances, and hopes a number of people respond between now and the end of the session. He also says that once developers look at the results, it could shed some light on what the masses would really like to see happen at the Capitol…:

But Higgins doesn’t think it will stop there. He says the decision to surgically remove this part of our history reflects weakness and fear.

Dr. Belinda Davis with the Public Policy Research Lab says this results in added costs for employers as the cost of temporary workers and training new employees is expensive. The House Appropriations Committee has voted to fully fund the TOPS scholarship program for the next fiscal year. Baton Rouge Representative Franklin Foil amended the state’s proposed budget to take 82-million dollars from the Department of Health’s budget to fund it.

New Orleans Representative Walt Leger raised concerns about how these cuts would impact LDH. He says the only areas of the health budget that can be cut are optional Medicaid programs that will greatly impact Louisiana residents.

An 83-year-old LaRose man will be sentenced next month for a sex crime he committed over 30 years ago. Lafourche Assistant District Attorney Kristine Russell says the victim was seven years old at the time and this is a huge victory for her…

Warren Danos was convicted of sexual battery and faces at least 25 years behind bars.

Two out of state residents are dead after a private plane crashed in a field in Morehouse Parish. Sheriff Mike Tubbs says the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will conduct an investigation into what caused the crash….

Funeral services will take place Thursday for Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s deputy Justin Beard. He was killed in a single vehicle wreck on Sunday while responding to a burglar alarm.

The Appropriations Committee, which is dominated by Republicans, approves a spending plan for next fiscal year that fully funds the TOPS scholarship program. The House GOP plan calls for an 82-million dollar cut in state funding to the Department of Health, so that the state can fully cover tuition payments for TOPS students.

Legislation that would regulate car-sharing services like Uber and Lyft received approval from the House Commerce committee. Uber and Lyft support having standard rules across the state, so they don’t have to negotiate agreeements with local jurisdictions. They say it could help expand their service into smaller communities. The measure heads to the House floor for more discussion.

The Saints had a big need to draft a pass rusher and in the sixth round they took defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad. The 6-3, 253-pounder had his issues at Miami. He was suspended for the entire 2014 season for punching another student. He was also suspended for one game for violation of team rules in 2015 and then was kicked off the team last year  after allegedly receiving improper benefits from a car rental company. Coach Sean Payton says Muhammad has made some mistakes, but he’s been a good teammate…

The Diocese of Lafayette says the Reverend Felix David Broussard is expected to enter a guilty plea tomorrow in court on charges of accessing and possessing child pornography. Louisiana State Police arrested the Acadia Parish native last July after investigators allegedly found over 500 images of child porn his personal computer. Broussard served as a priest for the Diocese of Lafayette for over 20 years.

The Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of 26-year-old Deputy Justin Beard, who was killed in a crash Sunday morning. State Trooper Michael Reichardt says Beard was responding to a call on Highway 34 when he veered off the roadway.

Evangeline Parish is battling flooding that’s occurring as a result of a severe weather system. Office of Emergency Preparedness Director Liz Hill says although the water wasn’t as high as it was in the August flood, some people had to be rescued from their flooded homes.

Flooding impacted about 60 homes in Mamou, along with the schools, hospital, and city hall.

Two people are dead after a private plane went down in Morehouse Parish. Sheriff Mike Tubbs says his deputies received a call yesterday afternoon in reference to a plane that went down in Collinston near the Morehouse Detention Center.

It’s a sad day in Ouachita Parish, as the community mourns the loss of 26-year-old Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Beard. State Trooper Michael Reichardt says Beard was responding to a burglar alarm early Sunday morning on Highway 34 when he was involved in a crash.

Rising waters are a concern today in Evangeline Parish, as flooding from that weekend storm system hit  at least two towns hard. Director of the Evangeline Office of Emergency Preparedness, Liz Hill says the city of Mamou sustained extensive damage.

Hill says the town of Basille on the Acadia Parish line was also affected. She says they’re still waiting on a count, but the flood damage could be as bad or worse as it was in Mamou.

Hill says many residents are just getting power restored in their homes. She says although the water wasn’t as high as it was in the August flood, some people had to be rescued from their flooded homes.

An 83-year-old Larose man has been found guilty of sexual battery of a 7-year-old that occurred over 30 years ago. Lafourche Assistant District Attorney Kristine Russell says a victim came forward to report the incidents with Warren Danos that occurred between 1984 and 1986.

Russell says Danos is set to be sentenced June 20th on a count of sexual battery. He faces a minimum of 25 years behind bars. She says two other victims came forward, but those cases had reached the statute of limitations, because the victims were not raped. She says this is a huge victory for the victim because they didn’t expect a guilty verdict.

Russell says the victim said on the stand that’d she’d been a victim for 30 years, and she wanted her life back. She encourages any victim of sexual assault to come forward and report it to police, no matter how much time has passed.

TOPS was only funded at 70 percent under the governor’s budget proposal, leaving lawmakers to find more than $81 million needed to fully fund the program. Foil says he will leave it up to LDH to decide where to allocate those cuts.

The Appropriations committee’s version of the budget funds the Department of Health 235-million dollars below what Governor John Bel Edwards proposed. New Orleans Representative Walt Leger raised concerns in committee about how these cuts would impact LDH. He says the only areas of the health budget that can be cut are optional Medicaid programs, like behavioral health services. He says this cut will greatly impact Louisiana residents.

The amendment was approved on a 19-5 vote and the entire budget was approved on a 17-5 vote, along party lines. The full House could take up the spending plan later this week.
