After giving up 11 runs on 14 hits in a loss to UNO last night, the LSU baseball team is back at it again as they host Hofstra at 6:30 at Alex Box Stadium. A report from Tulane has found that 17-hundred public school teachers have left their profession since the legislature passed a law in 2012 that made it more difficult for educators to achieve tenure. Co-author of the report, Nathan Barrett, says many of the educators that left were close to retirement and teachers who left under-performing schools rose by 27-percent….

Student achievement became a major factor in a teacher receiving tenure as part of the 2012 law.

It appears state lawmakers have reached an agreeement on addressing the 304-million dollar budget deficit. The plan is expected to receive legislative approval this afternoon. A major sticking point has been the use of rainy day money to help plug up some of the hole.
A survey from the National Retail Federation finds that 48-percent of consumers who will receive a tax refund plan to put that money towards savings rather spend. The 48-percent is only second to last year’s record high of 49-percent. Denham Springs financial planner Matt Kennedy says consumers are also looking to reduce their debt….

Barrett says poorly-performing schools typically have students with troubled backgrounds, meaning teachers chance poor tests schools leading to bad teacher evaluations.  Barrett says whether or not you agree with tenure protections, it’s something many teachers appreciate.

He says younger people saw their parents suffer in the 2008 economic downturn and don’t want to risk it in the stock market.

The big sticking point is the use of rainy day dollars. The governor and the Senate have agreed on 99-million dollars, but House Republicans believe it should be lower, so more cuts to the budget can be made.

State Police are responding to a crash in Pointe Coupee Parish involving a trooper, and another driver who died in the wreck, according to officials. They say preliminary investigations show the trooper was headed down 190 when a truck pulled out in front of him. The driver of the truck was sent to a hospital where he died. State Police says the trooper is injured, but nothing critical or life-threatening.

The magic number is $99 million at this point when it comes to rainy day dollars to be used for the $304 million dollar deficit. 70 votes are needed. The special session must end at midnight.

History was made in the Maravich Center last night as the LSU men’s basketball team lost its 14th straight game, which ties a school record. Auburn thumped LSU 98-75 in front of a sparse crowd. The last time LSU lost 14 straight, it was the 1966-67 season. That’s before Pete Maravich suited up.

Last night was a big night for the Southland Conference. UNO rallied back from a six to one deficit to beat fifth ranked LSU 11-to-8. The Tigers middle relievers got lit up. Hunter Kiel gave up four runs in less than inning, Collin Strall gave up another two runs and Russell Reynolds allowed four runs. UNO’s number eight hitter Owen Magee drove in four runs.

McNeese State scored a school-record 32 runs and had 29 hits in a 32-4 win over the ULM Warhawks. Ricky Ramirez set a new school record by scoring six runs as the Cowboys improved to 4-0.

Nicholls won its home opener as the Colonels defeated UL Lafayette three to one. Redshirt senior Mike Hanchar pitched seven standout innings and struck out nine in the victory.

And Southeastern Louisiana scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat Tulane eight to five in Hammond. Second baseman Carson Crites hit a three-run homer to snap a five-five-tie in the seventh inning.
