Governor John Bel Edwards will on Sunday meet with US Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price to talk about Medicaid expansion. Governor’s office spokesman Richard Carbo says the governor wants to ensure that the people who finally have health coverage are able to keep their insurance…:

He says over 402,000 working people in Louisiana have gotten coverage since Medicaid expansion.

A Gallup report finds Louisiana has some of the most enthusiastic employees in the country. According to the survey, 36-percent of Bayou State workers are engaged. It also found people are more engaged when they are self employed. LSU Assistant Professor in the Rucks Department of Management Jeremy Beus (bus) says this makes sense for Louisiana where there are many small businesses.

It was not a good start to the Boogie Cousins era for the Pelicans. Despite 27 points and 14 rebounds from Cousins the Houston Rockets walloped New Orleans 129-99. Head Coach Alvin Gentry says they were out of sorts and they’ll try again tomorrow in Dallas.

The Pelicans have signed guard Jarrett Jack to a ten-day contract. The 33-year-old played for the Hornets in New Olreans during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

And newly acquired Pelicans Omri Casspi will miss the next four to six weeks with a broken thumb.

The 76ers announce former LSU standout Ben Simmons will not play at all this season because of a foot injury.

Last night, Louisiana Tech won its seventh straight game last nighta s the Bulldogs defeated North Texas 85-67. With the win, the Bulldogs secure a first round bye the Conference USA Tournament.

UNO won its fifth straight last night and as they easily defeated four-time defending Southland Conference champion Stepehn F Austin 84-61 last night. The Privateers are at Northwestern State tomorrow afternoon.

LSU opens a three-game series against Maryland at the Box tonight. Tigers are 3-1 on the year and Coach Paul Mainieri says his team is still a work in progress….

A Baton Rouge man pleaded guilty today to a 2010 home invasion and murder of a single mother and injuring of her then 9-year-old in the Beauregard Town home. 27-year-old Aramis Jackson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Alexandra Engler, and attempted first degree murder of Ariana Engler. He was sentenced to life in prison on the first charge, and 50 years confined to hard labor on the second. Jackson was facing a trial in 5 months and a possible death sentence if convicted.

It’s a big weekend for many Louisianans, including Governor John Bel Edwards. But the governor won’t be at a parade, he’ll be in Washington fighting for more flood recovery dollars. His communications director Richard Carbo says Edwards is requesting an additional $2 billion in federal assistance.

Grambling State University has won the support of the University of Louisiana System Board to reinstate their undergraduate nursing program. University President Rick Gallot says they still need approval from the Board of Regents and the state Board of Nursing, and from there they can hire a program director.

The program was closed in 2015 when the passage rate fell below 80-percent.

Mardi Gras festivities are getting underway around the state. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says the celebrations aren’t limited to just Cajun Country, as he was recently the Grand Marshall for the first ever parade in Ball.

Under the governor’s budget proposal for next fiscal year unveiled Thursday, TOPS is funded at its current level: 70%. The Board of Regents is meeting today to discuss possible changes that could be made to the program to make it more sustainable. Higher Ed Commissioner Joe Rallo says one option would be requiring students to take 30 credit hours a semester rather than 24…:

The U.S. Justice Department and attorneys in New Orleans and Lafayette announced Thursday that an oil company will have to pay $9.5 million dollars in penalties over allegations of falsely reporting safety inspections and violating the Clean Water Act in the Gulf of Mexico. Wood Group will pay $7 million for the false reports, and $1.8 million for discharging oil into the gulf in a November 2012 explosion that killed three people.

Ag Center leaders announced Thursday that they are offering a five-year contract to a single vendor to get things rolling. Southern officials say first it’ll be important to educate the public to remove any negative stereotypes the community may have on how the drug will be used.

It was a game that was filled with hype, but new Pelican All-Star Demarcus cousins said magic between he and Anthony Davis wouldn’t happen overnight and he was right. The Pels fell in a rough game last night against Houston by a score of 129-99. Cousins put on a stellar performance though with 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Davis added 29. Also newly acquired from the Kings was Omri Casspi, and he broke his right thumb in his first game with New Orleans. He scored 12 points in 24 minutes. The Pels visit Dallas tomorrow night. Thursday night the New Orleans NBA team announced they waived forward Terrence Jones and signed shooting guard Hollis Thompson to a 10-day contract.

In college hoops last night, Louisiana Tech downed North Texas by a score of 85-67 to extend the Bulldogs season-best winning streak to seven and secure a first round bye in the CUSA Tournament for the 4th year in a row.

Heartbreaker for McNeese hoops, Houston Baptist rallied from a 20-point deficit to stun the Cowboys 81-79. Nicholls picked up their first road conference win last night in a 77-68 decision at UIW.

The LSU baseball team begins a three-game series tonight against Maryland, who is a favorite to win the Big 10. The Terrapins are off to 1-2 start as they lost two games to Ball State. But Tigers Coach Paul Mainieri says don’t be fooled by Maryland’s slow start…:

Last night in the inaugural Mardi Gras Invitational: Beads and Baseball on the Bayou, Nicholls State fell to Hofstra early on and the Colonels ended up losing in Thibodaux, 10-3.

McNeese Baseball team hung in there but couldn’t get by No. 7 Arizona last night and the Wildcats picked up the 9-3 victory.

Southern pounded Wagner 11-4. It was the first win of the season for the Jaguars.

The Board of Regents meets today to discuss possible changes to TOPS. Under the newest proposal, those recommended changes do not include making the award amount tiered for freshmen, sophomores, and upperclassmen. Rallo says a flat grant amount is one option on the table.

The recommendations will go into a bill by Baton Rouge Senator Sharon Hewitt that will be taken up in the regular session. Rallo says a proposal to require TOPS students to complete 30 credit hours a semester, rather than 24, is also up for consideration. He says this could ensure that students complete their degrees in four years.

The undergraduate program was closed in December of 2015, and officials have been working to get a new program instated.
