Grambling State football coach Broderick Fobbs announced that wide receiver Chad Williams is suspended for the season opener against Virginia University of Lynchberg. Williams was arrested last May and charged with possession of marijuana and guns.

Saints Coach Sean Payton said today that they may move struggling offensive lineman Andrus Peat to left guard. Payton says when they drafted Peat in the first round, they envisioned he would play on the right side, but so far during this preseason, it isn’t working out, so he may move to left guard. New Orleans final preseason game is Thursday night at home against Baltimore.

Tropical Depression number nine in the southeast Gulf of Mexico is expected to turn towards the general direction of Louisiana, but eventually move northeast towards Florida. It’s also expected to become a tropical storm, but State Climatologist Barry Keim says forecasters are having trouble predicting it’s eventual intensity…

The search continues in north Louisiana for three inmates who escaped from the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center on Saturday. Authorities say Michael Elliot, Walshea Mitchell and Willie Ethridge scaled a fence with two rolls of razor wire to gain freedom. The three men are serving time for convictions that range from attempted to second-degree murder to theft. If you spot one of these escaped jail birds, contact 9-1-1.

The Governor’s Office announces registration is now open for the Shelter At Home Program. Communications Director Richard Carbo says people can register at ShelterAtHome.la.gov or call 1-800-927-0216. He says the program awards up to $15-thousand for home repairs so that people can get back into their homes quickly.

Carbo says registering for FEMA does not register someone for the Shelter At Home Program. He encourages everyone to register for federal aid, but reminds people they need to apply for this program separately.

Carbo says the program covers repairs such as removing debris, replacing water heaters, and making sure there’s a working bathroom and air conditioning. He says people who do not qualify for this program do have other options.

Tropical Depression 9 is in the southeastern Gulf of Mexico and the latest forecast track has the developing storm moving towards Louisiana, but eventually turning and making landfall on Thursday in Florida. State climatologist Barry Keim says the National Hurricane Center has the depression strengthening into a tropical storm, but admits forecasters are having trouble predicting its intensity.

Keim says the depression could become a tropical storm by the end of today or overnight and it should move into the center of the Gulf by tomorrow. He says it will basically be aimed at Louisiana, but a front should push the storm to the northeast.

Keim says the storm is being steered by an area of high pressure. He says although it’s not certain yet, it looks like Tropical Depression 9 will be Florida’s problem, not Louisiana’s.

Governor Billy Nungesser was the Plaquemines Parish President in 2005. He says we’ve learned from Katrina that rushing cleanup is not a good idea…:

Overall, at least 1,245 people died in Hurricane Katrina and subsequent floods, making it the deadliest US hurricane since the 1928. 13 fatalities have been confirmed following the recent flooding, and Nungesser says it’s incredible that number isn’t higher…:

Nungesser feels that FEMA is doing a great job this time around of getting to people quickly and providing information needed on what steps to take to make the rebuilding process go as smooth as possible. He says another thing that people can learn from Katrina just by looking at the affected parishes, is how possible it is to come back stronger than ever…:

A man who was in this country illegally is in jail in connection with a deadly crash on I-10 near LaPlace that claimed the lives of two people including the St. John Fire Chief. State Police Trooper Melissa Matey says the driver of the at-fault party bus did not have a license and faces several charges, including negligent homicide…

He says the rescue operations following the flood were remarkable considering how fast the water came up in places that had never seen it before.

Forecasters says the latest models of Tropical Depression No. 9 in the Gulf of Mexico show there is a very good chance Louisiana will not be impacted by this system. Nearly all tracks put the storm off to the east and into Florida on Thursday.

Last year’s starting quarterback at McNeese State, Daniel Sams, has been arrested by Lake Charles police for his alleged role in a fatal home invasion on August 12th. Sams bond has been set at 200-thousand dollars.

The Saints who are winless in the preseason have one more exhibition game left and it’s this Thursday at home against Baltimore. Coach Sean Payton says they have two weeks left before the first regular season game and there’s still time to correct the mistakes that are being made…

Payton told reporters today he’s considering moving second-year offensive lineman Andrus Peat to left guard. Peat played left tackle and left guard last season and hasn’t adjusted to right guard as quickly as the coaches wanted.

Former Saints tight end Benjamin Watson is likely out for the season after tearing achilles tendon. Former Louisiana Tech star Kenneth Dixon was also injured in that game. The rookie Ravens running back injured his M-C-L in his knee and is it out at least four weeks.

Flood weary residents have been nervously watching the tropics as a system enters the Gulf of Mexico, but the latest models show TD 9 heading to Florida and making landfall there Thursday. The National Hurricane Center expects the system to get stronger and become a tropical storm later today.

Two people are dead and 36 injured after a party bus hit a fire truck and several other vehicles on I-10 near LaPlace in St. John the Baptist Parish. State Police Trooper Melissa Matey says the driver of the bus was in the US illegally and did not have a driver’s license. She says one of the fatal victims was District Chief Spencer Chauvin with the St. John the Baptist Fire Department…:

She says the wreck also killed 21 year old Jermaine Starr who was a back seat passenger in one of the vehicles that was hit. Denis Yasmir Amaya Rodriguez of Honduras is charged with two counts of negligent homicide and one each of reckless driving and driving without a license.
