Residents of Donaldsonville have been advised not to drink the water until further notice, because the Peoples Water System has been treating its drinking water with elevated levels of chlorine dioxide. State health officer Dr. Jimmy Guidry says they will conduct an on-site inspection of the system, including testing the water.

Chlorine dioxide was found in the water treatment system at levels four to five times the EPA standard for the chemical. Guidry says this chemical is an EPA-approved water treatment disinfectant.

Guidry says they have notified the water company that it must immediately change how it treats its water. He says the health risks are minimal for most people, but it could be dangerous for pregnant women and children.

Exposure to chlorine dioxide can cause serious health effects to the nervous systems of infants, young children and to the fetuses of pregnant women. The water system serves about 10-thousand customers. The “do not drink” alert will remain in effect until further notice.

Author of the legislation, Hammond Representative Chris Broadwater, filed the bill after working with a group for fourth graders, who came up with the idea to get rid of uniforms. New Orleans Representative Joe Bouie opposed the legislation…

Houma Rep. Beryl Amadee says she supports uniforms in public schools because she remembers a time where kids would get beat up at school for wearing name brand tennis shoes or expensive clothing.

The investigation eventually cleared him, as the Inspector General said there was no evidence to support these accusations. Cain says these false claims ruined his life.

Cain stepped down January first. He says he does not feel any animosity towards Governor John Bel Edwards, who asked him to step down, because Edwards was just doing his job. He says so far he is enjoying retirement, and he’s just ready for all this to be over.

Legislation seeking to end the public-versus-private school split impacting the LHSAA scored a victory in the House education committee. The panel approved the measure after hearing from two highly successful coaches at select schools. John Curtis Head Football Coach JT Curtis called on the legislature to help bring the association back together

Three years ago, member principals of the LHSAA voted to split the playoffs in football and the split will be expanded to other sports next school year. Metairie Park Country Day boys basketball coach Mike McGuire says the split will double the number of state champions in basketball and that’s a bad thing…

Yahoo Sports is reporting that LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva says they are not making a change in basketball coach next season. Speculation about coach Johnny Jones’ future surfaced after the Tigers brutal 71-38 beating in the SEC Conference Tournament to Texas A&M. But it appears as though Jones will be returning next season.

A measure that would ban school boards from requiring uniforms didn’t make it out of the House Education Committee today. Hammond Representative Chris Broadwater says a group of fourth graders picked the measure as one they wanted him to bring up in the session. But New Orleans Representative Joe Bouie feels this would negatively impact family finances …:

The bill was deffered and Broadwater says he’s going to talk to the fourth graders more about the bill before taking further action.

An incident terrified a group of children at the Boys & Girls Club in Lafayette when a 15-year-old allegedly shot another teen several times during a basketball game. Lafayette Police say the suspect was booked on Attempted 1st Degree Murder Charges and Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile in a Gun Free Zone. The 17-year-old victim is in critical condition. The investigation remains ongoing.

A 64-year-old man from Independence died when he crashed into a garbage truck in Tangipahoa Parish, according to State Police. They say Edward Stewart slammed into the back of the stopped truck and died at the scene, while seriously injuring a worker who was collecting garbage at the time of the collision.

Saints coach Sean Payton tells reporters at the NFL owners meetings that he’s agreed on a new five-year contract with the Black and Gold. Payton is 87-and-59 in his nine seasons in New Orleans and has led the Saints to five playoff appearances. There are also reports that the Saints are working on a four-year contract extension with Quarterback Drew Brees. And the Saints do not have to worry about Hard Knocks as the Los Angeles Rams will appear on the popular HBO series.

At Louisiana Tech’s Pro Day, NFL teams kept a close eye on Bulldogs running back Kenneth Dixon’s workout. Draft analyst Mike Detillier says teams like Dixon’s ability to catch passes out of the backfield…

In a battle of I-10 rivals, the LSU Tigers knocked off UL Lafayette 8-5 at the Wally Pontiff Junior Classic at Zephyr Field in Metairie. Cole Freeman and Jake Fraley each drove in two runs, as the Tigers as a team were 6 of 12 with runners in scoring position. Steven Stensley blasted a three-run homer, but the Cajuns lost their third in a row.

In a I-20 match-up…Louisiana Tech topped ULM seven to one. Chase Lunceford and Cody Daigle hit home runs for the Bulldogs, while the Warhawks were held to just two hits.

Elsewhere…UNO upended South Alabama eight to two, Tulane topped Southern Miss 12 to seven and Southeastern Louisiana outscored Jackson State 12-8 for the Lions ninth straight win.

The water system in Donaldsonville has been declared in violation of safe drinking water standards by the state Department of Health and Hospitals, and as a result they’ve told residents there not to drink or cook with with the water. DHH says a routine inspection discovered possible elevated levels of chlorine dioxide in the treatment system in Donaldsonville and they are ordered to change immediately.

North Louisiana is still reeling from the massive downpour that dumped upwards of two feet of rain in some areas, and caused widespread flooding. West Monroe Senator Mike Walsworth’s concerns include crops that are still under water…:

He also doesn’t see how parish governments will be able to pay for the damage even if they are eligible for federal aid but are still responsible for 25%.
