It’s national signing day and the LSU Tigers are poised to have the number one recruiting class in the nation. One of the nation’s top defensive tackles is expected to sign with the Tigers and that’s Neville star Rashard Lawrence, who helped the Monroe school win back-to-back state championships. LSU is expected to sign five defensive linemen and three offensive linemen, including four star John Curtis standout Willie Allen.

Sean Payton has finally made it official, Dennis Allen is the new defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. Allen took over the reigns of the defense after Rob Ryan was fired in November. In other Black & Gold coaching announcements: Dan Campbell has been hired as assistant head coach and tight ends coach, Aaron Glenn is the secondary coach, and Joe Lombardi rejoins the coaching staff as quarterbacks coach.

LSU shot nearly 57-percent from the field last night as they defeated Auburn 80-68. Freshman sensation Ben Simmons led the Tigers with yet another double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. LSU improves to 14-8 on the season and 7-2 in the SEC, which puts them in second place in the conference standings behind Texas A&M. The Bayou Bengals will host Ole Miss Saturday.

In Sun Belt Conference play, UL-Lafayette slipped past ULM in overtime 72-65. Ragin Cajuns forward Shawn Long led all scorers with a season high 28 points. Justin Roberson led the Warhawks with 21. UL-L extends their winning streak to seven games and improves their league record to 8-3. That’s good enough for second place in the Sun Belt. The Cajuns hope to make it eight in a row when they play at Appalachian State tomorrow night. ULM looks to bounce back when they play the Mountaineers Saturday.

In the Southland, Northwestern State rolled past Central Arkansas 91-75. Zeek Woodley scored 30 and Devonte Hall added 20 to lead the Demons to victory. Northwestern now finds themselves riding a three game winning streak.

The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office says they have found the murder weapon in the investigation into the stabbing death of Dylan Kyle Poche. The 18-year-old was killed Saturday at the Sibley Lake boat launch. Captain Tony Moran says they’ve arrested 18-year-old Andrew Jacob Wallace and after several days of searching detectives found a critical piece of evidence.

NPSO says 18-year-old William Holman has been arrested for accessory after the fact to 2nd degree murder and disturbing the peace and 18-year-old Kristine Woodall is charged with aggravated  assault with an hammer and engaging in a fistic encounter.  Moran says Wallace was arrested shortly after the stabbing because he fled the scene in a vehicle and was followed by relatives of Poche….

Two juveniles and their mother have been arrested in connection with the death of 14-year-old Treyvon Goudueu of Melville. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office says an autopsy determined Goudeau died of a gunshot wound to the head, and his body was found in woods Friday evening. A 12 year old is charged with Negligent Homicide. His 15-year-old brother is charged with Obstruction of Justice. Their mother is booked with Obstruction of Justice and 2 counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile.

Acadiana’s Cajun Groundhog, the nutria Pierre C. Shadeaux, predicts an early spring as he did not see his shadow on this Groundhog Day. Pierre came out of his house this morning in New Iberia in front of a huge crowd led by Daily Iberian Publisher Will Chapman. He says the young nutria forecasts a shorter winter for the fifth year in a row…:

After losing to number one ranked Oklahoma on Saturday, the LSU Tigers are back in action tonight against Auburn in an SEC match-up. The Bayou Bengals are 6-2 in league play, while Auburn is 3-5. It will be interesting to see how LSU freshman Ben Simmons will play. He had 14-points against the Sooners and faced criticism that he wasn’t aggressive enough or didn’t want the ball late in the second half. Tip-off is at 6 PM.

The Ragin Cajuns put their six-game winning streak on the line tonight as they host in-state foe ULM. The Warhawks have won four in a row and they are led by Majok Deng, who is averaging 20 points a game. But ULM is just 1-and-11 on the road, while UL Lafayette is 9-0 at home. Tip-off is at 7:15.

Also tonight, Northwestern State visits Central Arkansas. Two years ago and last year, these two teams played games that saw each team score over 100 points. Tip-off is at 6:30.

Tomorrow is national signing day. 24-7 sports and ESPN say as it stands now, LSU has the number one recruiting class in the nation. Ponchatoula offensive lineman Donavaughn Campbell who committed to LSU last January announced that he’s sticking with that verbal pledge and will sign with the Tigers tomorrow.

According to a survey of coaches, UL Lafayette is picked to win the Sun Belt in baseball. The Cajuns received eight first place votes, while South Alabama received three. ULM is picked to finish tenth in the 11-team league.

Southeastern Louisiana has been picked to win the Southland title in baseball this season. The Lions are the preseason favorites in the coaches and sports information directors polls. In the SID poll, Northwestern State is picked to finish in second place, followed by McNeese State and Nicholls State is expected to finish in fifth place.

Residents in the Tensas Parish town of St. Joe are being told by the Department of Health and Hospitals that it might be a while before the murky brown water in their system can be cleared up. DHH’s Dr. Jimmy Guidry..:

He says the autopsy determined that Goudeau was shot in the head and that’s how he died. An arrest, possibly two, have reportedly been made, but details are scarce at this time.

A former cop in Avoyelles Parish who worked for Bunkie and Cottonport police has been arrested by State Police amid allegations he was on duty at the same time for both departments and collected pay from each. Investigators say they discovered 47-year-old Joseph Johnson of Mansura, for quite some time, was collecting two payroll checks for working the same hours. He was charged with 30 counts of public payroll fraud and malfeasance in office.

Severe storms prompted the National Weather Service to issue a tornado watch today for 31 parishes across south central/southeast and far northeast Louisiana. They say the squall line is associated with an approaching cold front which will cause temperatures to drop dramatically in the over night hours into Wednesday. The good news is that the forecast remains mostly dry, yet cool, in the days leading up to Mardi Gras.

Residents in the Tensas Parish town of St. Joseph have been dealing with some brown, murky running water which has raised concerns. The EPA and the state Department of Health and Hospitals say the level of iron in the system discolors the water, but it’s not a health issue. State Health Officer, Dr. Jimmy Guidry, says the St. Joe water system is old and they are working on a fix for the dark water…:

He says the state legislature has approved funds to work on the system.

The Thibodaux Police Department arrests one of the men in connection with the double shooting at a parade. They say it was 20-year-old Ryan Harris of Napoleonville who, while wearing body armor, approached Quincy Johnson and shot him in the chest as several thousand people were gathering for Mardi Gras festivities on Sunday. Johnson fired back striking Harris on the left side. Harris is charged with attempted 2nd Degree Murder, Unlawful Use of Body Armor, Terrorizing, and Illegal Carrying of a Firearm at a Parade.

Meanwhile most parishes in south central, southeast and on up to far northeast Louisiana are under a tornado watch until 7 this evening. The National Weather Service says a strong thunderstorm system is moving through that could produce damaging wings in excess of 40 miles per hour. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly following the storm with Wednesday highs in the 60s.

Louisiana’s Cajun groundhog, Pierre C. Shadeaux, predicts an early and long spring this year. The young nutria came out of his Cajun cottage in New Iberia this morning in front of a crowd awaiting to find out his forecast. Publisher of the Daily Iberian Will Chapman led the ceremony and says since he didn’t see his shadow, we will have a longer spring and put off the extreme summer heat.

Chapman says every February 2nd Pierre C. Shadeaux makes his prediction at Bouligny Plaza. He says every year there is a great turnout for the event and the kids really look forward to seeing him come out of his Cajun cottage.

Pierre’s cousin, Punxsutawney Phil, made a similar prediction today in Pennsylvania calling for an early spring. Chapman says Pierre takes his job very seriously, as he has a lot of responsibility with predicting this forecast.

Residents have reported brown, murky water coming from their faucets. State Health Officer, Dr. Jimmy Guidry, says the system’s source water contains a level of iron that discolors the water…

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the murder of a Melville teenager. Capt. Clay Higgins says 14-year-old Treyvon Goudeau was shot once and found dead in the woods on Friday. He says the case was originally identified as just a suspicious death but it has now turned into a homicide investigation.

The coroner says Goudeau was shot once in the head. Higgins says detectives searched a Melville home this morning and interviewed a number of people but no arrests have been made at this point.

Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne says he’s paying his executive staff nearly 400-thousand dollars less than what employees were paid under the previous administration. Dardenne says he’s decided against filling a couple of positions and will pay a few people less, because of the state’s budget problems
