The Louisiana Lottery Corporation says the Powerball jackpot for tomorrow night’s drawing has been increased to $800 million dollars with a cash value of $496 million. They say there could be more increases before Saturday’s draw. Spokeswoman Kimberly Chopin says sales are ridiculous..:

The opening of the Bonnet Carre will now begin at 10AM Sunday. They also say the floodgates of the Morganza Spillway will open no sooner than Tuesday. The spillways are being opened to alleviate flood threats due to rising water levels on the Mississippi River.

President Barack Obama is coming to Baton Rouge. The White House announced that the president will visit the Capital City Thursday, January 14th. The announcement states that President Obama will focus on state gains in the past seven years, including a drop in the unemployment rate and new aid for Louisiana’s early childhood education programs. This will be the 10th time the president has visited Louisiana and his first trip to Baton Rouge.

Arkansas State edged ULM 68-65 in overtime. Majok Deng scored 26 for the Warhawks. ULM faces Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday.

Louisiana Tech’s 39-game home winning streak was snapped last night by Old Dominion 56-53.

Could LSU lose defensive line coach Ed Orgeron to another school in the SEC West? It’s been reported Mississippi State has made an aggressive offer to Orgeron to be the Bulldogs new defensive coordinator. Orgeron just completed his first season at LSU, which saw its D-Line play improve.

LSU will play Louisiana Tech and Southeastern Louisiana in football in 2018. The Tigers will play the Lions for the first time since 1949 on September 8th of that year. The Bulldogs will visit LSU on October 20th. Rice and Miami of Florida are the other two non-conference games in 2018.

Louisiana Tech’s other non-conference opponents in 2018 are South Alabama, Mississippi State and they’ll host Bowling Green.

A couple of other football notes…former LSU wide receiver and Neville star John Diarse has transferred to TCU. And Tim Detillier is retiring as the head coach of the Lutcher Bulldogs. Detillier led his alma mater to four state championships on the high school level, including this past season.

Education Week Magazine’s Quality Counts report ranks Louisiana 49th in academic achievement as the state does not compare well with others when it comes the performance of fourth and eighth graders in the areas of math and reading. The Morganza Spillway will be opened on Monday by the US Army Corps of Engineers in efforts to contain the rising waters of the Mississippi River. Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says water will be diverted from the Mississippi River into the Atchafalaya Basin…:

The suspect accused of stabbing an LSU football player during a bar fight Tuesday has been located and arrested. Baton Rouge Police Department Cpl. L’Jean McKneely says 20-year-old Jamal Joseph Vaughn is charged with aggravated 2nd Degree Battery. He says Tiger tight end Dillon Gordon was stabbed multiple times…:

The Louisiana Lottery says you can expect more winners this weekend as the estimated jackpot for Saturday tops $700 million dollars.

Louisiana’s public schools rank 49th in the nation in academic achievement. It’s the second year in a row Education Week Magazine found Louisiana barely gets a passing grade for classroom performance. Center director Holly Yetcick (Yet-ick) says their report looks at a variety of factors, including how schools are financed and Louisiana saw its score drop in that category..:
